To keep a webpage you can read offline, open it while it is still available, use your browser’s print dialog to save it as a PDF, then open the file and check it. For a second, shareable record, submit the page to Internet Archive’s Save Page Now and keep the archived URL. The PDF and archive capture serve different purposes; neither is a guaranteed, complete backup of a website.
Save the page as a PDF while it still loads
- Open the exact page. If it has expandable sections, open the sections you need. If content or images appear as you scroll, scroll through the page and allow them to load before printing. A print operation cannot be assumed to include content that never loaded.
- Open the browser’s print dialog. Choose the PDF destination, often labeled “Save as PDF,” or a similarly named option. Browser labels and menu paths can vary.
- Review the print preview. Check that the relevant text, tables, and images appear, and that page breaks do not cut off important material. Adjust available layout or scale options if needed.
- Save with a descriptive filename in a folder you can find again. For example, include the page subject and capture date in the filename.
- Open the saved PDF. Check that the intended content is present and legible, including tables, images, and page boundaries. If anything important is missing, return to the live page, load or expose that content, and save another copy.
A PDF is a static document: it is useful for reading, printing, and keeping a local record, but it does not recreate the original website’s interactive behavior or linked pages.

Add a Wayback Machine capture for a shareable reference
- Open the Wayback Machine and use its Save Page Now feature to submit the page’s URL.
- When the submission finishes, save the resulting archived URL somewhere alongside the PDF.
- Open the archived URL and inspect the capture. Check that the timestamp identifies the capture you intended and that the content you need actually appears.
Internet Archive says Save Page Now saves the submitted page, including images and CSS, “in most cases.” It captures one submitted page: it does not save that page’s outlinks or start a crawl of the whole site. Some sites prohibit crawling, and some SSL settings can cause failures. A successful submission is not a guarantee that every image, script-driven element, or other resource was preserved. The Wayback Machine may also fall back to live resources when an archived link is missing, so inspect what you are viewing rather than assuming every displayed element came from the archived capture. For important material, keep the local PDF even if you also save a Wayback URL. A University of Aarhus tutorial revised April 16, 2026 recommends keeping local copies because Internet Archive captures may later become unavailable under applicable crawling policies. Neither a PDF nor a single-page archive capture should be treated as a guaranteed full website backup.

Common problems and what to check
- Sections or images are missing from the PDF: They may not have loaded or may have remained collapsed. Return to the live page, expose the content, scroll through lazy-loaded sections, then print and inspect a new file.
- The PDF is clipped or hard to read: Check the print preview for page breaks, orientation, and scale. Try available layout options and inspect the resulting file before relying on it.
- Save Page Now fails: The site may prohibit crawling, or SSL settings may prevent capture. Keep your local PDF and inspect the archive result if one is created; a failed or incomplete archive does not replace the local copy.
- The archived page shows missing or unexpected content: Resources or JavaScript-dependent elements may not have been captured, or a missing archived link may display a live resource. Check the capture timestamp and whether the specific content appears in the archived view.
- You need pages beyond the submitted URL: Save Page Now does not crawl a whole website or capture outlinks. For an organization with recurring collection needs, consider whether a managed institutional service such as Archive-It fits the requirement.
