How to Approve Visual Changes in Percy Builds

Approve only the Percy snapshots with intentional visual changes. Learn how to review diffs, accept selected snapshots, and reduce capture noise.

Run your Percy visual test, inspect the build’s diffs, and approve only the snapshots whose changes are intentional. Approving a snapshot accepts its new appearance as the baseline for future comparisons; an unexplained or accidental change should be fixed, not approved.

Run the visual test and open its Percy build

Start a build using the visual-testing integration configured for your project. The command depends on your setup; Percy’s Cypress guide gives npx percy exec -- cypress run as an example, not a command for every project. See Percy’s visual testing guide.

When the run has produced a build, open it in Percy and review the visual comparisons. Percy presents side-by-side diffs with changed areas highlighted. For each snapshot, check that you are looking at the expected page state and viewport, and connect the difference to the code or design change you intended to make.

Decide whether each snapshot is safe to approve

  • Expected design or UI change: approve that snapshot to accept its appearance as the new baseline.
  • Unexpected difference or regression: investigate and fix the UI, then run the visual test again. Do not use approval just to clear a failing or pending check.
  • Unclear difference: hold off on approval until you know whether it comes from a real UI change or capture noise.

Approval is a baseline decision, not a substitute for checking that the page still behaves correctly. Visual comparisons test appearance; retain functional tests for behavior.

Approve selected snapshots without accepting the whole build

Percy documents snapshot-level approval: you can make reviewed snapshots the baseline without approving the complete build. Use that when some snapshots are ready to accept but the rest still need review. The feature was described in Percy’s changelog on June 24, 2023; exact controls and permissions may depend on your current project and interface. See Percy’s changelog.

Percy’s changelog also documents that approved snapshots carry forward between builds for the life of a branch, and that a “changes requested” snapshot status is reflected in build status and carries forward on that branch. Those are documented behaviors, not a guarantee about every current project’s CI rules. If a build’s status affects merging or deployment, check your project’s current settings.

Reduce noisy diffs before reviewing

Stable captures make it easier to distinguish real changes from test noise. Percy recommends a controlled server environment, fixed viewports and stable configuration. Where content changes independently of your code, mask or exclude the dynamic areas when appropriate, then review the remaining diff rather than accepting an unexplained change. See Percy’s guidance on visual testing.
