For a new general voter registration in India, submit Form 6 through the Election Commission of India’s Voters’ Services Portal. After submission, use the portal’s Track Application Status service to follow the form. Eligible applicants can also apply through the Voter Helpline app or file with the election officials responsible for their area.
Check eligibility before applying
The Election Commission of India (ECI) says you can enrol as a voter if you are an Indian citizen, are at least 18 on a qualifying date for the electoral-roll revision, ordinarily live in the relevant constituency’s polling area, and are not disqualified from enrolment. The qualifying dates are 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October in the year of revision. See the ECI’s Voters’ Services Portal and its How to Register to Vote FAQ for current information.

The portal describes Form 6 as the application for people who are 18 or will turn 18 in the coming months. Use the ECI’s qualifying-date rule to assess when you meet the age requirement.
Choose the form that matches your situation

These forms serve different purposes: if you are already registered and need to correct or update your entry, use the relevant Form 8 service rather than applying again with Form 6. Check the ECI’s registration FAQ and portal for the current form options.
Apply online through the ECI portal
- Open the ECI Voters’ Services Portal. Choose Form 6 for new general registration, or Form 6A if you qualify to register as an overseas elector.
- Complete the selected form and provide the information and supporting material requested by the current form. ECI’s Manual on Electoral Rolls says online forms allow applicants to upload scanned documents and a photograph. Follow the form’s current instructions for what applies to your case.
- Submit the application and keep its reference details so you can follow its progress.
- To track it, open Track Application Status. The tracking login page asks for your registered mobile number, email ID or EPIC number, a captcha, and an OTP request. ECI’s manual also describes status lookup using a mobile number or reference ID.
Other ways to submit an application
ECI also lists the Voter Helpline app as an application route. If online filing is unavailable or unsuitable, you can submit the application and relevant documents in person to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) for your area, send it by post to the officer, or hand it to the Booth Level Officer (BLO) for your polling area. The ECI FAQ describes these options; contact the responsible election official for local filing details.
Application status is different from voter-list status
Track Application Status tells you about a form you have submitted. It does not by itself establish that your name appears on the electoral roll. Once your application has been dealt with, search the electoral roll to verify that you are enrolled, as the ECI advises in its registration FAQ.
How long does voter registration take?
The ECI pages reviewed do not state a universal processing-time guarantee. Use the portal’s tracker for updates on your application, or contact the ERO/AERO responsible for your area if you need case-specific information.
