Apply rendering rules in the screenshot API request: use the provider’s documented CSS or JavaScript injection fields, selector controls, and wait options, then check the returned output. Parameter names and limits differ between services, and metadata extraction is separate from styling a screenshot.
Choose the API’s exact request format first
Do not assume a CSS or JavaScript field from one API will work in another. Check the endpoint reference for the request method, parameter names, code-size limits, plan restrictions, and when injected code runs.

Use CSS to change appearance or hide elements
CSS is appropriate for visual adjustments such as changing a background, hiding an unwanted element, or simplifying a page for capture. If the API offers a dedicated hide-selector parameter, use it for straightforward removals; use custom CSS for broader style overrides. The available controls vary by provider.

- Find a selector that uniquely identifies the element you want to change or hide.
- Test the selector in the browser’s developer tools before putting it in an API request.
- Pass the CSS or selector through the parameter and method documented by the API.
- Review the resulting screenshot: page layouts and selectors can change, so a previously valid rule may stop matching.
OpenGraph.io specifically advises: “For best results when using selectors, test them in browser dev tools first to ensure they target the correct elements.”

Use JavaScript only for actions CSS cannot perform
Injected JavaScript can perform a DOM action before capture, but the execution method and timing are provider-specific. Use it only when a style or selector control cannot achieve the desired result. Confirm that the action has completed before the screenshot is taken; otherwise the image may capture the page before the change appears.
Check the provider’s documentation for whether scripts are accepted inline, how they are represented in the request, and when they run. For example, Cloudflare Browser Run documents inline addScriptTag entries, while Screenshot API and ShotAPI use their own request fields.
Wait for the page state you need
A page that depends on client-side JavaScript may initially render without the content you want. A fixed delay can help when rendering time is predictable, but a selector wait or suitable network-idle condition is generally more closely tied to the page state you need.

- Wait for a selector: Choose a stable element that appears only when the relevant content is available. Provider timeout limits apply.
- Wait for network idle: Use when the page’s requests are a useful signal that rendering is complete; ongoing background requests can make this unsuitable on some pages.
- Use a fixed delay: Reserve this for cases where the page has no reliable selector or network signal. It can waste time or still be too short if load times vary.
Cloudflare notes that JavaScript-heavy sites can be incomplete before client-side rendering finishes and suggests network idle or waiting for a target selector. Screenshot API documents waitUntil strategies and waitForSelector; ShotAPI documents wait_for_selector with a 10-second timeout.

Set the capture scope and output separately
Custom styling, capture scope, and output format solve different problems. Use a selector capture when you need one component rather than the entire page; choose full-page or viewport capture according to the use case. Set viewport, image format, quality, and device scale deliberately rather than treating them as CSS rules.
Cloudflare cautions that a larger viewport can look blurry when device scale factor is too low. OpenGraph.io documents viewport presets and selector use. Check the chosen provider’s reference for the exact parameter names and supported output controls.
Keep metadata extraction distinct from screenshot styling
A screenshot returns a visual artifact, such as an image or document. Metadata extraction returns structured page information and may require a separate endpoint or a provider that exposes metadata alongside capture. Define the fields your workflow needs—such as title, Open Graph tags, HTTP status, favicon, image dimensions, fonts, or page content—before choosing the service.

Troubleshoot common problems
The API rejects the CSS or JavaScript field
Check whether the endpoint requires POST, whether you used that provider’s exact field names, and whether a size limit or plan restriction applies. For example, Screenshot API marks advanced CSS, JavaScript, and hide-selector options as POST-only; ShotAPI documents paid-plan limits and a 10 KB maximum for each injected CSS or JavaScript value.

The selector has no effect
Inspect the current rendered DOM and verify that the selector matches the intended element. Avoid relying on a selector copied from an old page version. Confirm that the provider accepts the selector in that particular option—capture, hide, or wait selectors may be separate controls.
The screenshot misses dynamically rendered content
Wait for a meaningful element or an appropriate network-idle state. If using a selector wait, check that the selector is correct and that the provider’s timeout is long enough for the page. A fixed delay is a fallback, not a guarantee.
The screenshot is blurry
Review the viewport and device scale factor together. Cloudflare’s documentation notes that a larger viewport may appear blurry if the device scale factor is too low.
A bot check still appears
Changing the user agent does not guarantee access to a protected page. Cloudflare explicitly states that its userAgent parameter does not bypass bot protection. Treat the returned page as a bot check rather than assuming the screenshot API can render through it.

A screenshot URL no longer works
If using OpenGraph.io, its documentation says screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours. Download the image or cache it while the URL remains valid if the workflow needs longer retention.

Before committing to an API, check more than whether it accepts CSS. Compare the request shape, capture behavior, metadata, output lifecycle, and billing or plan requirements against your integration:
- Inline versus external CSS or JavaScript, field names, and request method.
- Selector capture, hide-selector support, and selector-based waits.
- Code-size, timeout, plan, and output-format limits.
- Viewport, full-page, and device-scale controls.
- Which metadata fields are returned and whether they require another endpoint.
- Whether output is returned directly or through a temporary URL, and any retention or caching behavior.

Can I reuse the same CSS parameter across screenshot APIs?
No. Each provider defines its own parameter names and request format; use the endpoint documentation for the API you selected.
Does a screenshot API automatically return Open Graph metadata?
Not necessarily. Metadata availability is provider-specific, and some workflows may need a separate metadata endpoint.
