To apply a paper-feel screen protector with fewer bubbles, match it to your iPad, clean the display thoroughly, align the film before exposing its adhesive, and lower it steadily. Most bubbles come from trapped air or dust; air can usually be pushed out toward an edge, while dust may require carefully lifting the nearest corner.
Before you start
Check the protector maker’s compatibility list against your iPad’s generation, screen size, and model number. A protector that is slightly mismatched can be difficult to align and may not cover the screen correctly. For example, the reviewed Paperfeel adhesive listing covers iPad 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-generation models, not every iPad: check its listed compatibility.

- Read the instructions for your exact protector before opening it. Hinge stickers, alignment frames, dust-capture sheets, and installation trays each have their own sequence.
- Choose a clean, well-lit, low-dust area and a clean, flat, stable surface.
- Have the supplied cleaning materials and dust-removal sticker within reach. Remove the iPad case if it interferes with placing the film.
Paper-feel products are generally designed to add a matte, textured surface, so do not assume the screen will look exactly as it does under bare glass. One reviewed Paperfeel listing warns that its protector may affect screen clarity.

Apply the protector step by step
- Power off the iPad and position it. ESR recommends powering off for its UltraFit installation so dust and smudges are easier to see. Set the iPad on the stable surface with the screen facing up.
- Clean the display using the supplied method. Follow the kit’s instructions rather than substituting materials. ESR’s UltraFit instructions specify an alcohol wipe followed by a lint-free cloth; other products may include different cleaning materials. Check the glass from several angles and use the supplied dust-removal sticker on any remaining specks.
- Dry-fit and align the protector before peeling its backing. Line up its edges, camera openings, and other cutouts. If the kit includes a hinge, frame, tray, or helper, use that product’s procedure. Paperlike’s guide uses guide stickers as a hinge; its Paperlike 3 system describes a Butterfly system, Helper alignment tool, and integrated dust-capture sheet.
- Expose the adhesive only when you are ready to install. Avoid touching the adhesive side. For a hinge or frame system, keep the film secured as its instructions direct while you remove the backing.
- Lower the film in a controlled, even motion. Follow the product’s particular application method. For ESR UltraFit, the tab should stay level and be pulled smoothly at a consistent speed; tilting or pausing can create bubbles. That tab technique applies to this system, not automatically to every protector.
- Let the film settle, then deal with visible bubbles. Use the method the maker permits. For ordinary air bubbles, gently guide the air from the center of the bubble toward the nearest edge with an appropriate smooth card or cloth. Paperlike mentions a card, while ESR’s support guidance recommends fingers.
Tell air bubbles from dust
ESR says bubbles are most likely caused by dust or air trapped between the screen and protector (ESR product support). A bubble that moves as you press toward an edge is likely trapped air. A stubborn raised spot may be held open by a dust speck; pressing harder will not remove the particle.

If a bubble moves
With light, even pressure, push it toward the nearest edge using the tool or method approved by the protector maker. Avoid sharp objects or forceful scraping, which could damage the film or screen.
If a spot will not move
Inspect it closely. If it appears to be dust, and the maker’s instructions allow lifting the film, gently lift only the nearest corner or edge enough to reach the particle. Use the supplied dust-removal sticker to lift the dust, then lower the protector again. Do not assume every adhesive film can be lifted and reapplied without damage.

Troubleshoot a poor result
- The protector does not fit or its cutouts do not line up: Stop rather than forcing it into place. Recheck the iPad’s generation, model number, and screen size against the maker’s compatibility list.
- A bubble stays in place: Check whether dust is underneath. If it is air, try guiding it to an edge; if it is dust, use the careful lift-and-sticker method only if the maker permits it.
- A fine line or small bubble remains: Paperlike’s application guide lists small bubbles, large bubbles that do not catch smaller ones, and a fine line that cannot be pushed out as troubleshooting cases. Its guide directs users to its support flow; it does not establish one universal fix for all protectors.
- Bubbles remain after correcting dust or air: ESR says a replacement protector may be needed if bubbles cannot be removed. Avoid repeated lifting if the film or adhesive is becoming damaged.
Choose an installation style that suits you
Paper-feel products are not all installed the same way. Compare the exact iPad compatibility, dust-control design, alignment help, included cleaning tools, whether the product adheres permanently or can be removed, and the maker’s comments on clarity.

Whichever type you choose, treat the maker’s fit list and installation instructions as authoritative for that particular product. A paper-feel finish can also affect screen clarity, so consult the product’s own description rather than assuming it is optically indistinguishable from bare glass.
