To analyze a website load in Wireshark, capture a short session on the network interface carrying your browser’s traffic, then inspect the packets and protocol conversations. You can see useful details such as endpoints, timing, connection behavior, and—when the traffic is unencrypted or decryption is configured—application-level requests and responses. A capture of encrypted traffic alone does not reveal the page’s HTTP contents.
Before you start: what a capture can show
Wireshark analyzes packet captures from live network traffic or saved capture files. It is useful for examining how a browser’s connections and requests unfold, but what you can read depends on the protocol and whether application data is encrypted. The official guide lists network administrators, security engineers, QA engineers, developers, and people learning protocol internals among its audiences: Wireshark User’s Guide.

For an ordinary encrypted website, a capture can still help you examine visible network behavior, including endpoints, packet timing, and connection sequences. Do not describe HTTP contents as inspected unless the capture actually exposes them or you configured decryption successfully.
Capture one reproducible page load
- Choose the interface carrying the traffic. Start Wireshark and select the appropriate network interface, such as Ethernet or 802.11. If several interfaces are active, the wrong choice can leave you with no relevant browser packets. A live capture may require special privileges, depending on your system and setup.
- Start a live capture. Begin capturing before you load the page so the initial connection activity is included.
- Load or refresh the page once. Wait until the page’s network activity has settled, then stop the capture. A short, repeatable capture is generally easier to interpret than a long recording that includes unrelated traffic.
- Save the capture. Saving lets you revisit the same packet data and compare it with another capture. Wireshark’s guide covers live capture and saving packet data in its capture documentation.
If you intend to observe Ethernet traffic but your computer has no suitable wired interface, a USB Ethernet adapter may provide one. It is optional, not a Wireshark requirement; confirm your operating system, drivers, and capture topology before buying hardware.

Filter packets without confusing the two filter types
Wireshark has separate capture and display filter languages. A capture filter limits what Wireshark records in the first place; a display filter narrows the packets shown after capture. Their syntax differs, so do not assume a filter written for one stage works in the other.
For example, http.request is a documented display filter for showing HTTP requests in a capture. It does not make encrypted HTTPS requests readable, nor does it retroactively change what was recorded. See the guide’s sections on capture and display filtering; check the Display Filter Reference for fields supported by your installed version.

Inspect the conversation, not just individual packets
Read decoded packet fields
Select a packet and expand entries in the packet details pane to inspect the fields Wireshark decoded. This is the useful next step when a packet list raises a question about a protocol layer, address, or field.

Follow a protocol stream
When you need a conversation view rather than isolated packets, use Wireshark’s Follow Stream feature. The guide supports following streams for protocols including TLS, HTTP, HTTP/2, and QUIC. What the resulting view contains still depends on encryption and available decryption settings; following a TLS stream is not itself a way to decrypt it.

Use HTTP statistics when the capture contains readable HTTP
For clear-text HTTP, Wireshark’s HTTP statistics can summarize packet counts by request type and response code, requests by host and URI, load distribution, and request sequences assembled using Referer and Location headers. These views help describe which requests appeared in the capture and how the recorded headers link them; they do not establish that a page is defective or slow by themselves.
The guide describes these views under HTTP statistics. They are most useful when the relevant HTTP data is available to Wireshark in readable form.

Set expectations for encrypted HTTP/2 and HTTPS
Wireshark’s guide states: “As HTTP/2 traffic is typically encrypted with TLS, you must configure decryption to observe HTTP/2 traffic.” Without decryption, do not claim to have inspected HTTP/2 application traffic or page contents. Instead, limit conclusions to what the capture exposes, such as endpoints, packet timing, and connection behavior. The guide’s HTTP/2 section explains the decryption requirement.
Compare captures on consistent terms
If you are comparing two page loads or investigating a possible network issue, keep the comparison controlled and describe what is actually different. Record these axes for each capture:

- Interface and scope: Which interface did you capture, and what activity was included?
- Protocol and host: Which protocols and hosts appear in the relevant packets?
- Request and response sequence: What order of requests and responses can you establish from the data?
- Response codes: Which codes are present in readable HTTP, if any?
- Timing: What timing differences are visible between the captures?
- Application-data visibility: Was the traffic readable as captured, or was decryption configured?
Wireshark’s documentation provides filtering and HTTP-statistics tools, but it does not establish universal thresholds for calling a page load slow or broken. Interpret timing and response details in the context of the same capture scope and the question you are trying to answer.
Use the filter reference as a version-specific guide
The Wireshark Display Filter Reference reported version 4.6.9 as covering “over 328000 fields in 3000 protocols.” That figure describes the reference’s filter-field coverage, not the amount of traffic in a capture or a measure of analysis results. Filter fields change as Wireshark evolves, so validate a field against the reference for the version you have installed: Display Filter Reference.
