Allow OBS Studio through Windows Firewall
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Menu wording can vary slightly by version. You may need an administrator account or approval to change the settings.

- Open the Windows Security app.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall.
- Select Change settings. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
- Find OBS Studio in the list and check the box for the network profile where you want OBS to communicate. If it is not listed, choose Allow another app, browse to the installed OBS executable, and add it.
- Select OK to save the change, then retry the OBS task that was failing.

Choose the right network profile
Windows associates allowed-app entries with network profiles. Microsoft describes a private network as trusted and a public network as untrusted. Enable OBS only for the profiles on which you need it to work. For example, if you only need OBS on your trusted home network, you may not need to allow it on public networks. The right choice depends on where you use OBS; use the narrowest exception that meets your need.

To review the active network and its firewall status, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection. Microsoft’s overview explains the profiles and related controls: Firewall and network protection in the Windows Security app.
Why an app exception is preferable to opening a port
Use Allow an app through firewall instead of creating a manual port rule for this fix. Microsoft says the allowed-app approach is generally safer: Windows opens the required ports for the app when needed, while a manually opened port remains open until you close it. If OBS is still blocked
Check security software
Antivirus and other firewall products can interfere with OBS connectivity or capture. OBS Project recommends allowing OBS through relevant security software. For a streaming-server connection failure, its troubleshooting guidance suggests temporarily disabling security software only as a diagnostic check. If the connection works during that brief test, add an OBS exception and turn the protection back on; do not leave security software disabled. Follow the product’s own instructions for adding an exception.

If OBS was moved or reinstalled, check whether the allowed-app entry refers to the current executable rather than an old installation path. If necessary, remove the stale entry and add the executable from the current installation folder using Allow another app. Microsoft’s procedure adds an app by selecting its executable; a stale path is one possible issue, not a guaranteed cause.

Check whether Windows or a security product is blocking the connection
If the error persists, verify that the active network profile matches the one you allowed, then check any third-party firewall or antivirus rules. OBS users have reported errors such as “Failed to connect to server. The connection was blocked. Check your firewall / anti-virus settings to make sure OBS is allowed full internet access,” but that forum wording is an example report, not an official diagnosis. A 2019 OBS forum reply mentions checking the Windows network profile and outbound rules; treat that as a troubleshooting lead, not a guarantee about current Windows configurations. Ask your administrator on a managed device
On a work- or school-managed computer, policy may prevent changes to firewall settings. Contact your organization’s IT support rather than trying to bypass its controls.
