First identify what is silencing the call: unknown-caller screening, Do Not Disturb (DND), or a block on private caller IDs. On iPhone, change Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers to Ask Reason for Calling or Never. On supported Android phones using Google Phone, check the app’s Call Screen settings. DND exceptions are separate controls and may not override call screening.
Identify which setting is silencing the call
“Unknown caller” can mean a number that is not in your contacts, a caller whose number is hidden, or a call being screened by your phone. These are not interchangeable. Before changing anything, check whether the active control is call screening, DND, or blocking for private or unidentified caller IDs.

- Call screening screens, silences, or sorts calls according to the phone’s screening options.
- DND limits interruptions according to the people and calls allowed by that mode.
- Private-number blocking targets calls with hidden or unidentified caller ID. In Google Phone, blocking unknown numbers still allows calls from numbers not saved in contacts.
Labels and availability vary by phone, software version, manufacturer, and region. Use the current settings on your handset if a path or option differs.
Let unsaved numbers through on iPhone
Apple lists the unknown-caller options at Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers. Choose the behavior that fits how much screening you want:

If the goal is to hear unfamiliar callers after screening, select Ask Reason for Calling. To let unsaved numbers ring without that screening, select Never. See Apple’s Manage unknown callers on iPhone for the current options.
Adjust call screening on Android
Google Phone Call Screen
If the call is being screened by Google Phone, open the Phone app’s settings and inspect Call Screen or Unknown Call Settings. Google says automatic call screening can be disabled for users who do not want to miss an important call from someone outside their contacts. The feature and its behavior depend on supported Pixel devices and can vary by region; these controls are not universal across Android phones. Android Do Not Disturb
If DND is active, review the mode’s allowed people and calls. On supported configurations, Android can allow a second call from the same person when it arrives within 15 minutes of the first. This repeat-caller option can help if the caller tries again, but it does not ensure that a first call from an unknown number will ring. Google’s Android Do Not Disturb guidance explains the available interruption controls.
When the caller is hidden or the phone still stays silent
A number missing from your contacts is not necessarily a private or unidentified number. Google Phone’s “block unknown numbers” control still permits calls from numbers that are not stored in contacts, so it should not be treated as a setting that blocks every unsaved caller. Review the specific block or caller-ID option if the number is hidden; Google’s instructions for blocking or unblocking a number describe that distinction.

If a known contact is being silenced while Focus or DND is active, check that mode’s permitted people or calls settings and any contact-specific options. A DND exception is a separate control: do not assume it will override unknown-caller screening. For an unfamiliar number, change the relevant Phone or Call Screen setting described above.
