To alert on bans or jail status, expose Fail2ban state through an exporter or a Node Exporter textfile-collector script, have Prometheus scrape or collect those metrics, and define alerting rules. Prometheus evaluates the rules; Alertmanager routes and manages notifications.
Check Fail2ban status before setting up metrics
The Fail2ban client can show server-wide status, all jails, or one jail. The upstream manual documents these commands:

Choose how to expose jail metrics
Fail2ban status is not automatically a set of Prometheus metrics. A third-party integration must read Fail2ban state and expose it, either through an HTTP endpoint Prometheus can scrape or through files consumed by Node Exporter’s textfile collector.

These are community projects, not Prometheus-maintained Fail2ban integrations. Examples include the hctrdev Fail2ban exporter, the jangrewe textfile-collector script, and the mivek exporter. Prometheus also maintains general guidance on exporters and integrations. Before adopting any project, verify its current releases and documentation, permissions, Fail2ban compatibility, and metric semantics; no one option is established as universally best.
Distinguish active bans from cumulative bans
The hctrdev exporter documents per-jail metrics for current bans, total bans, current failures, and total failures, along with exporter health, errors, jail count, configuration values, and version. Its jail_banned_total metric includes expired bans, so it is not a gauge of currently active bans. Use the project’s current-ban metric to reason about active bans, and a counter or total metric to reason about accumulated events. Do not treat these project-specific names as built-in Fail2ban metrics. hctrdev exporter documentation.

Configure Prometheus alert rules for the question you need answered
Prometheus alerting rules evaluate PromQL expressions. When an expression returns a vector element, its labels identify an active alert instance. A rule’s for duration keeps that alert pending until the condition remains true for the specified time; keep_firing_for can retain firing state after the expression stops matching. These settings help shape alert behavior, but appropriate thresholds and durations depend on your host and response policy. See the Prometheus alerting rules documentation.
Adapt rule expressions to the metrics, labels, and reset behavior of your selected integration. The following are alert patterns, not ready-to-paste PromQL:

- Active-ban load: Test the current-ban gauge per jail if the team needs to know when active bans exceed an operator-defined threshold. Use labels that preserve the affected instance and jail.
- New bans over time: Apply a counter-increase calculation over a chosen time window when the concern is whether new bans are occurring. Confirm that the selected metric is cumulative and account for resets; a current gauge answers a different question.
- Exporter or scrape failure: Alert when Prometheus cannot scrape the target, the exporter’s documented up metric is zero, or its documented error metric indicates a problem. Use the metric names the chosen project actually provides and check how scrape labels identify the target.
- Missing jail coverage: Compare reported jail identities with the jails you expect. A total jail count by itself does not establish that every required jail is present or healthy.
A useful alert should identify the host and jail, state the symptom, and point responders to an actionable runbook. Avoid paging for short-lived blips unless they matter operationally. Prometheus recommends simple, actionable alerts and symptom-oriented monitoring in its alerting practices.
Route notifications through Alertmanager
Prometheus evaluates rules and sends resulting alerts to Alertmanager; Alertmanager handles notification concerns such as grouping, routing, rate limiting, silences, and inhibition. Configure Prometheus to send alerts to Alertmanager, then configure Alertmanager routes and receivers for the people or systems that should respond. Neither the Fail2ban integrations nor Prometheus documentation establishes universal ban thresholds or a Fail2ban-specific notification destination. See the Prometheus alerting overview.

Monitor the monitoring path
If the exporter stops running, a textfile stops updating, or the scrape fails, missing ban metrics can look like no ban activity unless collection health is alerted on separately. Monitor target availability and the integration’s own health or error metrics where available. For textfile collection, consider how a failed update or stale file will appear in metrics.
An alert that depends on the same broken monitoring and notification path may not reach anyone. Prometheus’s alerting practices note that external blackbox monitoring can detect failures hidden from internal monitoring and provide a fallback if internal systems fail. A separate check of the scrape and notification path can reveal problems that Fail2ban metrics alone cannot.
