Game studios and other game-industry professionals report using generative AI mainly for research, brainstorming, routine work, code assistance and prototyping—not simply to generate finished games. Adoption and rules vary, and survey responses do not prove that a particular tool is used across a studio or that AI-generated content appears in a released game.
What the surveys say about adoption
The Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2026 State of the Game Industry report draws on more than 2,300 game-industry professionals. It says 36% of respondents use generative AI tools as part of their job. A separate figure in the report says 30% of respondents at game studios reported using AI tools. Those figures have different denominators: the first includes a wider range of industry professionals, while the second focuses on respondents at studios. Neither is a census of studios or proof that every team in a company uses AI. GDC, 2026

Reported use is also not the same as measured benefit. These are respondents’ accounts of work tasks, not controlled tests of productivity, quality or cost.
What developers report using it for
Among respondents reporting generative-AI use, GDC’s 2026 report lists several overlapping tasks. Respondents could use multiple tools for different purposes, so the percentages are not mutually exclusive and are not shares of studios.

- Think You're Smart? Prove It! — Wit's End is a challenging trivia and brain-teasing board game where players battle wits in four mind-bending categories of smart trivia. Four uniquely designed categories engage your powers of deduction as well as your knowledge:
- Teaser — Can you crack the riddle? — These fun and tricky rhyming riddles will have you scratching your head as you try to deduce the answer.
- Odd-1-Out — Which one doesn’t belong? — You’ll be given four terms, but only three share something in common. Your job is to spot the odd-one-out.
- Sequence — What’s the order? — Organize movies by release date, cities by distance, historical events by year, animals by size, and more in this logic-based challenge.
- Wild Card — Antything Goes! — This unpredictable category throws surprises like Brain Trivia, Word Whiz, True or False, Memory Lane, and more! You never know what’s coming your way!
| Reported task | Share reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Research or brainstorming | 81% | Most commonly reported use in the listed results; does not show that suggestions were adopted into a game. |
| Daily tasks, such as email | 47% | Routine work assistance, rather than necessarily creating game content. |
| Code assistance | 47% | Reported support for coding; the figure does not measure code correctness or production readiness. |
| Prototyping | 35% | Reported use in exploring or making prototypes; it does not establish that a prototype shipped. |
All four figures are from GDC’s 2026 survey reporting and describe respondents’ stated uses, not a controlled time-saving study. GDC, 2026
Research, brainstorming and routine work
These uses can help developers explore an idea, organize information or handle everyday communication. The survey establishes that respondents report these activities; it does not establish how often studios rely on them or whether they improve a project’s outcome.

Code assistance and prototypes
Code assistance and prototyping are reported uses, and GDC’s 2026 conference trends coverage also describes discussion of automated coding and help with outlining, brainstorming and administrative tasks. That coverage documents discussion, not verified savings, code quality or readiness for a production build. GDC, 2026 Trends Report

In GDC’s 2025 survey, developers named concept-art and 3D-model generation among possible applications, alongside coding support and repetitive-task automation. GDC’s 2026 Trends Report describes two more specific examples: Tencent Games’ skeleton-generation model and Adobe Substance 3D Painter’s Warp to Geometry feature. These examples show tools and approaches being discussed or demonstrated; they do not establish broad adoption or routine generation of finished game art. GDC, 2025 GDC, 2026 Trends Report

Player-facing game content
The cited survey and conference reporting do not establish how extensively studios use generative AI in shipped dialogue, narrative, voices, music or other player-facing content. Work-tool use and demonstrations should not be treated as evidence that a released game contains generated material.
Why accounts of adoption can differ
A separate 2025 page from Google Cloud describes a Harris Poll survey of 615 developers, reporting that 90% used AI in workflows and 95% automated repetitive tasks. Google Cloud is a commercial AI and cloud vendor promoting the report, so these figures should be read as vendor-sponsored survey claims. The stated sample and framing differ from GDC’s; the percentages are not directly comparable as competing estimates of the same population or question. Google Cloud / The Harris Poll, 2025
When reading any adoption figure, check who was surveyed, what counted as AI use, and whether the result refers to individual respondents, studio respondents or companies. A high share of respondents using a tool in some workflow does not mean the same share of studios has standardized it across production.

Studio policies differ
GDC’s 2025 survey found that 64% of respondents said their company had some form of internal generative-AI policy, up from 51% in GDC’s 2024 report. The figure was 78% among respondents at AAA studios. The survey’s categories included optional use, selected tools allowed, use not allowed, mandated use, no policy and unknown or not applicable. A reported policy therefore does not necessarily mean a studio endorses broad use: rules can permit selected tools, leave use optional or prohibit it. GDC, 2025
The reports establish that companies set different rules, not a universal industry standard. They also do not establish a general legal rule, contract requirement or distribution-platform disclosure obligation; those questions depend on jurisdiction, agreement and platform and require separate, specific verification.

Why the technology remains contested
In GDC’s 2026 survey summary, 52% of respondents said generative AI had a negative impact on the game industry, while about 7% saw a positive impact. These are perceptions among survey respondents, not legal findings or measurements of generated-content quality. GDC, 2026
GDC’s 2025 report records concerns about intellectual-property theft, energy consumption, content quality, potential bias and regulation. It also describes differing views about creative control and workforce effects. The presence of a concern in survey responses is not proof of a particular legal violation or a quantified impact; it helps explain why policies and opinions differ. GDC, 2025 GDC, 2026 Trends Report

Quick Recap
What the available evidence can—and cannot—show
- Survey responses show what respondents say they do or believe, not adoption rates for every studio.
- Named tool examples identify specific approaches, not independently verified production gains or widespread deployment.
- Vendor-sponsored survey results should retain their attribution and methodology context rather than being blended with differently framed industry surveys.
- Productivity, cost and quality claims cannot be quantified from these reports: they do not establish comparable measurements across named studios.
