If you cannot correct the spill with the existing fixture, replace it with one designed to direct light onto the target area.
Start by checking whether the light is needed
If the light serves no practical purpose, switching it off is the simplest fix. If you need it for a path, entrance, or other task, identify that area before changing the fixture. The joint DarkSky International and Illuminating Engineering Society principles put it succinctly: “Light where you need it, when you need it, in the amount needed, and no more.”

Aim the beam at the task area
Adjust the fixture so its beam falls on the intended surface and does not extend toward the neighbor’s window. DarkSky and IES recommend shielding and careful aiming to keep light directed downward and within the area where it is needed. The National Park Service similarly advises choosing and installing a fixture to illuminate the task area without spill beyond it.
- Identify the specific area that needs illumination.
- Adjust the fixture’s direction so the beam lands on that area rather than across a property line or at window height.
- After dark, check from the neighbor-facing side and from the window’s likely line of sight. If the bright source or beam is still visible there, reposition or shield it further.
Shield the bulb and block stray light
A shielded or recessed fixture can block light from traveling sideways toward a window. The National Park Service describes fully shielded, or full cut-off, fixtures as directing light downward onto the task area, and recommends recessing the source so the bulb is not visible at eye level.

When comparing fixtures, check how their light is distributed and whether the shielding blocks high-angle or sideways light in the direction of the window. A fixture’s label alone does not establish that it will prevent spill at your particular mounting position; its distribution, mounting height, and aiming range must fit the site.
Reduce brightness to the level the task requires
Use the lowest light level that still lets you perform the task safely. If the fixture is brighter than necessary, DarkSky’s home outdoor lighting guide suggests using a dimmer or a lower-wattage bulb, where compatible. Also consider nearby surfaces: some reflect light back into the night sky or beyond the intended area.

Control when the fixture operates
A timer or occupancy sensor can limit illumination to the times it is useful; a dimmer can reduce the level when full brightness is unnecessary. These controls reduce unnecessary operation, but they do not correct a beam that still points at a window. Aim and shield the fixture first, then choose controls suited to how and when the light is used.

Choose a replacement by its fit, not just its label
If the existing fixture cannot be aimed or shielded well enough, consider a replacement that directs light onto the task area. Compare the practical features that determine whether it will work at your location:

- Distribution and shielding: Does it direct light onto the target and block light toward the window?
- Mounting and adjustment: Can it be installed at a position and height that allow the beam to be aimed correctly?
- Output and controls: Can it provide an appropriately low level, and can it be dimmed or controlled by a timer or occupancy sensor if needed?
- Color temperature: DarkSky’s home guide recommends 3000 K or lower for home outdoor lighting. Warmer color is a secondary choice; it does not by itself stop light trespass.
- Specific certification: If a product is advertised as DarkSky Approved, verify that exact model in the program’s current listing. DarkSky’s Approved Luminaires guidelines, version 3.1, updated October 2025, describe program requirements including photometric files and test reports for offered distribution types. Approval assesses a product under the program; it does not guarantee that every installation will avoid every nearby window.
Check local rules separately
Lighting requirements depend on location, and the information here does not establish which rules apply to a particular property. Check with your city or other relevant local authority if you need a legal answer. The Illuminating Engineering Society says it does not provide specific guidance for lighting ordinances in its position on legislation and ordinances for outdoor light at night; do not assume that a particular fixture or installation violates a universal limit.
