What Limits 1.6 Tbps Per-Wavelength Fiber Links? Distance, Fiber Quality, and Reach

There is no universal distance rating for a 1.6 Tb/s optical wavelength. Reach depends on the transmission design and the particular fiber route, including its signal loss and dispersion, as well as how the system manages noise and signal distortion. AT&T reported a 1.6 Tb/s single-carrier trial over 296 km of its existing Newark–Philadelphia long-distance network; separate datacenter studies examine different systems and shorter distances. Those results answer different engineering questions, not competing claims about a single maximum reach.

Why 1.6 Tb/s does not specify a link’s reach

A data rate describes how much information a wavelength carries, not how far it can travel. A link that carries 1.6 Tb/s over one route does not establish that every 1.6 Tb/s link can cover the same distance. Reach depends on the complete optical system: the transmitter, receiver, fiber path, and any equipment used to compensate for losses or recover a degraded signal.

It also matters what “1.6 Tb/s” describes. In AT&T’s reported trial, the rate was carried on a single optical carrier, with two 800 GbE signals multiplexed in Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme system. It was not a generic distance specification for any fiber or transceiver.

What the reported 1.6 Tb/s distances actually show

Example Distance or scope What the evidence establishes
AT&T long-distance network trial, announced March 12, 2025 296 km, Newark–Philadelphia AT&T reported transporting 1.6 Tb/s on one carrier over this existing commercial route, alongside 100 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s wavelengths. The company identified a 200 Gbaud design and a 3 nm coherent DSP ASIC in the Ciena WaveLogic 6 Extreme transponder.
Verizon live metro-fiber trial, announced November 25, 2024 Distance not stated in the cited announcement Verizon reported carrying 1.6 Tb/s on one carrier using the same Ciena system. Without a stated route distance, the announcement does not support a reach comparison with AT&T’s trial.
O-band coherent datacenter design proposal, published in the Journal of Lightwave Technology in 2024 2–10 km target intra-datacenter reach This is a research proposal for a coherent design, not an operator guarantee or a reported long-haul field trial.
O-band intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) dispersion study, published in the Journal of Lightwave Technology in 2025 2, 10, 20, and 40 km evaluated The study examines dispersion-related limitations at those distances. Its available abstract does not establish a universal reach threshold or identify one distance as a general best-performing result.

The table’s figures describe different routes, system types, and kinds of evidence. In particular, the 296 km result is a route-specific field trial, while the datacenter figures describe research scopes; none is a universal maximum for 1.6 Tb/s.

Which factors limit reach?

Engineers assess the whole optical link budget rather than judging reach by fiber length alone. The factors interact: the signal must arrive with enough usable quality for the receiver’s digital signal processing and forward-error correction (FEC) to recover the data.

  • Optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR): The receiver needs a sufficiently strong signal relative to accumulated optical noise. The cited examples do not establish one OSNR threshold or margin that applies to all 1.6 Tb/s systems.
  • Chromatic dispersion: Fiber dispersion spreads or distorts transmitted waveforms. NTT Network Innovation Laboratories’ 2024 research says transmission-line waveform distortion becomes pronounced in proportion to the square of symbol rate. NTT also reports that, in its 2 km LAN-WDM results, whether a 1.6-Tbit/s signal transmits depends on the fiber’s chromatic-dispersion characteristics.
  • Symbol rate and modulation: Baud rate is the number of symbols transmitted per second; it is not itself the data rate. The 200 Gbaud figure AT&T identified is specific to its trial system. Symbol rate, modulation, and receiver design all affect how much information can be carried and how demanding the signal is to transmit and recover.
  • Fiber loss and amplification: Signal power falls along a route, and a system may use amplification to manage that loss. The route and its optical equipment therefore matter alongside the nominal fiber distance. The cited sources do not provide a universal attenuation budget for these links.
  • Nonlinear transmission effects: At high optical powers, fiber behavior can add signal penalties. Their significance depends on the system and route; the cited material does not specify a universal numerical penalty.
  • DSP and FEC: Coherent receivers use digital signal processing to interpret the received waveform, while FEC can correct some transmission errors. Their capabilities are part of the design budget, not a way to guarantee arbitrary distance.

Because these factors work together, improving one part of a link does not automatically produce a fixed increase in reach. A design has to meet the receiver’s usable-signal requirements over the actual route.

Does fiber quality determine how far 1.6 Tb/s can travel?

Fiber characteristics matter, but “quality” is not a single measurement that predicts reach by itself. Relevant route details can include fiber type and chromatic dispersion, as well as length, attenuation, splices, connectors, and operating conditions. The NTT results and the 2025 O-band IM/DD study specifically make dispersion relevant to high-rate transmission; they do not establish a universal fiber-quality score or individual pass/fail thresholds for these factors.

A practical reach assessment therefore needs both the route characteristics and the optical system intended to use them. A distance demonstrated on one installed route cannot be transferred to another route just because both carry the same nominal wavelength rate.

Why coherent long-haul and datacenter results are not interchangeable

AT&T’s 296 km result is a commercial-network trial using a coherent long-haul transport system. The O-band datacenter examples address different applications and transmission approaches: one is a proposed coherent design for 2–10 km, and the other studies dispersion limits for IM/DD systems at several distances. They differ in target environment, design, and evidence status.

Comparing the numbers without those distinctions would be misleading. A research study that evaluates a distance is not necessarily reporting that every configuration succeeds at that distance, and a long-haul field trial does not guarantee the same reach for an O-band datacenter link.

What to check when estimating a specific link

For a real deployment, the useful question is not “How far does 1.6 Tb/s go?” but “Does this system meet its signal-quality requirements over this route?” An engineering assessment should establish:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the exact transponder and transmission mode, including coherent or IM/DD operation;
  • the route length and fiber characteristics, especially loss and chromatic dispersion;
  • the system’s symbol rate, modulation, and any amplification along the path;
  • the receiver’s DSP and FEC design and the applicable performance requirements; and
  • the complete link budget and measured conditions for the intended route.

The available operator announcements and research summaries do not state a universal OSNR margin, FEC threshold, attenuation budget, or reach ceiling. Those values must come from the specific system design and route assessment, not from the headline rate alone.
