The right setting depends on what you want the game to do. Adventure Sync is for recording distance when Pokémon GO is not open; location permission determines whether the app can access location in the background; and Battery Saver controls the display when you point the device downward. Phone-level power saving is a separate control and can interfere with background distance tracking.

These controls work together, but they are not substitutes for one another. Enabling Adventure Sync does not by itself grant background location access or connect a fitness service. Allowing location access does not turn Adventure Sync on. And turning on the game’s Battery Saver is not the same as putting the whole phone into a system power-saving mode.

How to enable Adventure Sync
Adventure Sync can record kilometers while Pokémon GO is not open. Niantic says the feature can support Buddy Candy and Egg hatching, requires location permissions and a connection to Apple Health or Google Fit, and is available to Trainers at Level 5 and above. A compatible Android device is required for the Google Fit pathway.

If you are below Trainer Level 5, the feature is not yet available to you. Once eligible, think of setup as three checks: enable the feature in Pokémon GO, grant the background location permission, and complete the connection to the fitness service. If any one of those pieces is missing, the game may not record distance as expected while it is closed.
- Open the game settings. In Pokémon GO, open Main Menu > Settings > General.
- Choose Adventure Sync. Follow the in-game prompts to enable it and connect the relevant fitness service.
- Allow background location. Set Pokémon GO’s location access to Always or the equivalent option on your device. If location is available only while the app is in use, background tracking may not work.
- Confirm the fitness connection. Check that the Apple Health or Google Fit connection requested during setup is still active. For Android users following the Google Fit route, the device must be compatible.
Niantic describes Adventure Sync as an optional mode for recording kilometers when the app is not open. The in-game setup path and feature requirements are documented in its Adventure Sync help article. If the menu labels differ from these instructions, look for Adventure Sync within the current Settings screen; app controls can move between versions.
Adventure Sync can also be useful when you want Buddy Candy or Egg progress from distance recorded outside an open game session. It is not a promise of instant credit: Niantic notes that syncing may take several hours. Give it time before concluding that a newly enabled setting has failed, then work through the troubleshooting checks below if distance remains missing or incomplete.
Set Pokémon GO location access for background tracking
Adventure Sync needs location access while Pokémon GO is closed. Niantic’s troubleshooting instructions specify the Always permission for this use. The exact labels can vary by operating-system version and device manufacturer, so treat the paths below as general directions rather than guaranteed wording.
There are two location checks to keep separate: the app-specific permission and the phone’s main Location setting. On Android, Niantic advises checking both the Pokémon GO permission and that device Location is on. On iOS, the relevant app permission should be set to Always for Adventure Sync. If location is granted only while using the app, that restriction can prevent the background access the feature needs.
Android
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Go to Apps > Pokémon GO > Permissions.
- Open Location and choose the option that permits access at all times, if offered.
- Check that the device’s main Location setting is on.
iPhone or iPad
- Open device Settings.
- Go to Privacy > Location Services > Pokémon GO.
- Under the location permission controls, select Always.
Niantic also gives a general route of Settings > Apps > Pokémon GO > Permissions for Android, and Settings > Apps > Pokémon GO for iOS. If a menu name is different on your device, search the phone’s Settings for Pokémon GO or Location and check the app-specific permission screen.

On iOS, if you are prompted to enable location permissions every time you open Pokémon GO, Niantic’s troubleshooting advice is to review the app’s location permission and use Always for Adventure Sync. The precise wording or arrangement may differ across iOS versions, so focus on the permission’s meaning rather than expecting every device to show identical labels.

Pokémon GO has an in-game Battery Saver, while Android and iOS devices have their own power-saving features. They are not interchangeable, and the distinction matters when troubleshooting distance tracking.

To find Pokémon GO’s Battery Saver, open the game’s Settings and use the Battery Saver toggle. Its behavior is specific: the display switches off when the device is pointed downward, while the game can continue tracking distance as if the screen were on. For nearby Pokémon vibration, the separate Vibration option must be enabled. Niantic explains these details in its Battery Saver help article.
This is the setting to consider if you want the display off while the device is pointed downward. It is not the setting to disable first when Adventure Sync distance is missing. Niantic says the in-game option does not interfere with Adventure Sync distance tracking; the phone’s system battery-saving mode is the one that may disable sensors needed by the feature. During troubleshooting, you can leave the game’s Battery Saver enabled and test by temporarily turning off device-level and fitness-app battery-saving modes.
Troubleshoot Adventure Sync distance that is missing or incomplete
If Pokémon GO is not crediting steps or is counting only part of a walk, check each dependency in order. Adventure Sync can take several hours to sync, so a delay does not necessarily mean a setting is broken. Niantic also says manually entered fitness data does not count toward Adventure Sync.

- Check background location access. Confirm Pokémon GO is allowed to access location at all times, and that the device’s Location setting is enabled.
- Check the fitness service. Make sure Apple Health or Google Fit is connected and available. Android users relying on Google Fit need a compatible device.
- Temporarily disable power-saving modes. Turn off the phone’s battery-saving mode and any battery-saving mode in the connected fitness app while testing. These modes may limit sensors required for background tracking.
- Allow time for syncing. Niantic says syncing may take several hours; do not treat an immediate lack of credit as proof that the distance will never appear.
- Use eligible activity data. Manually entering fitness activity does not count toward Adventure Sync distance.
Niantic’s troubleshooting article specifically addresses Adventure Sync not tracking fitness progress, crediting only part of walked distance, and repeated iOS location prompts. It identifies location access, the connected service, compatible device sensors, and battery-saving modes as relevant checks. Consult the official troubleshooting steps if those checks do not resolve the issue.

A useful way to narrow the cause is to change one category at a time. First verify the in-game Adventure Sync toggle and fitness connection; next review location permission and the device Location setting; then test with system and fitness-app battery-saving modes off. This sequence follows the dependencies Niantic identifies and makes it easier to tell which setting was affecting tracking. If the distance is merely delayed, allow several hours for syncing before repeating the test.
Do not use manually entered activity as a test of whether Adventure Sync is working. Niantic says manually entered fitness data does not count toward Adventure Sync distance. The relevant troubleshooting path is to confirm the feature, permission, service connection, compatible device where required, and sensor availability, then give syncing time.
Adjust Pokémon GO notifications
Niantic says players can opt in to push notifications when a Buddy finds Candy or an Egg is about to hatch. The help pages available for these settings do not specify a complete, current path for general Pokémon GO notification controls or the current Android and iOS system menu labels. For that reason, there is no reliable cross-platform sequence to give here.

- For the Buddy Candy and Egg alerts associated with Adventure Sync, look for the opt-in prompt or related controls in Pokémon GO’s current in-game Settings.
- To allow or block notifications at the device level, open your phone’s app-notification controls and select Pokémon GO. The exact location and wording depend on the operating-system version and device.
- If an alert is not arriving, check both places: an in-game opt-in cannot override a phone-level block, and a phone-level permission alone may not enable an optional in-game alert.
Niantic’s Adventure Sync article confirms the Buddy Candy and Egg alerts, but it does not establish the exact current notification menus across platforms. Pokémon GO’s Settings help index is the official place to check for updated settings guidance.
These are optional push alerts related to Adventure Sync, not evidence of a single master notification path that applies to every device. If you want to stop an alert, check the game’s current settings as well as the phone’s notification controls. If you want to receive one, make sure you have opted in where Pokémon GO offers the alert and that the phone is not blocking app notifications. Because the menu labels are not established consistently across platforms, avoid assuming a specific sequence from another player’s device will match yours.
