Android app shortcuts are launcher entry points to specific actions or destinations inside an app. On a launcher that supports them, touch and hold an app icon to see available shortcuts; tap one to open the associated task. Some shortcuts can also be pinned as separate icons, but the app, launcher and user each have a role in whether that is possible.
What an Android app shortcut does
A shortcut takes you to a particular task or piece of content in an app, rather than merely opening the app at its usual starting screen. Android describes each shortcut as referencing one or more intents, which launch a specific app action when selected. The shortcut is therefore an entry point into the app, not a miniature version of the app itself.

For example, an app might offer a shortcut to compose an email, navigate to a saved place, message a contact, play the next TV episode or load a game save. These are examples of what an app could support—not a standard set of actions that every Android app must provide. An app with no shortcuts, or with only a few, is behaving within the model Android documents.

Where shortcuts appear and how to open one
On supported launchers, app-provided static and dynamic shortcuts are usually available from the app icon’s long-press menu. Touch and hold the icon on the home screen or in the launcher, then select a listed action. Android’s overview documents this interaction, but launchers can expose shortcuts differently, and the precise gesture or menu presentation is not identical on every device. An app may also provide no shortcuts to display.
A pinned shortcut looks different: it appears as its own launcher icon rather than only as an item in the menu attached to the app icon. It still leads into an app, but it represents a particular shortcut destination or action. It is not an app widget, and it does not turn the task into a separate app.
On Android 8.0 (API level 26) and newer, pinned shortcuts require a launcher that supports pinning. When an app asks to pin one, the launcher presents a confirmation request; the user can approve or decline. Thus, an app can offer the option, but it cannot silently add a pinned shortcut through this documented flow. The Android shortcut creation guide describes the confirmation step.

Static, dynamic and pinned shortcuts
Android distinguishes shortcuts by how they are defined or selected and who controls their availability. A shortcut’s type helps explain whether it is meant to be stable, updated with changing context or chosen by the user for a separate launcher icon.

| Type | Who provides or chooses it | Typical purpose | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static | The app developer defines it in a resource packaged with the app. | A stable, general action, such as viewing sent messages or setting an alarm. | It is designed to remain consistent for that app version. The user can also pin a copy if the launcher supports pinning. |
| Dynamic | The app publishes and manages it at runtime. | An action whose relevance can change, such as opening a recent conversation or a current game level. | The app can add, update or remove these shortcuts as context changes. The user can also pin a copy where supported. |
| Pinned | The user chooses to pin an offered shortcut; the app initiates a request and the launcher handles confirmation. | A particular destination or action the user wants available as its own launcher icon. | It appears separately from the app icon’s shortcut menu. The user can remove the pinned entry; the app may update its contents. |
These labels describe related but distinct things. Static and dynamic refer to how an app supplies a shortcut; pinned describes a shortcut that a user has asked the launcher to place separately. A user may pin a copy of a static or dynamic shortcut, so a pinned icon is not necessarily a third, independently authored action. The Android shortcuts overview and shortcut management guidance explain these types and their lifecycle.
How many shortcuts can you see?
There is no single number that guarantees what every Android user will see. Android’s overview says most supported launchers display up to four shortcuts, and advises developers to query a device’s value with getMaxShortcutCountPerActivity(). The number shown can depend on the device and launcher.
A separate Android best-practices page says the API supports up to 15 combined static and dynamic shortcuts and recommends publishing four distinct shortcuts for visual appearance. These numbers describe different things: the API’s combined capacity is not a promise that the launcher will display all of them at once. A developer should not assume that publishing the maximum makes every shortcut visible in the menu. See the Android shortcut best practices for the publishing recommendation and API figure.

How apps provide shortcuts
For developers, the central design decision is whether an action is stable enough to define in the app package or needs to respond to changing user context. Both approaches create shortcuts that lead to app actions, but the app’s work and update model differ.
Static shortcuts: define stable actions in app resources
Android’s creation guide directs developers to identify the launcher activity that handles the MAIN and LAUNCHER intents, reference a shortcuts resource from that activity’s manifest metadata, and define shortcut details such as its intent and labels. Because the definition is packaged with the app, this suits actions that make sense consistently for that app version. Consult the static shortcut creation guidance for the documented resource and manifest setup.
Dynamic shortcuts: publish actions as context changes
Dynamic shortcuts are created and maintained at runtime by the app. This makes them a better fit for destinations that depend on recent activity or current state—for instance, a recent conversation or an active game level. The app can add, update or remove these entries as that context changes. The benefit is relevance; the trade-off is that the list is managed by app behavior rather than being a fixed set of general actions.
Pinned shortcuts: request a user-approved launcher entry
To request a pin, an app checks whether the default launcher supports pinning and then asks the launcher to pin the shortcut. On Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later, the launcher flow requires user confirmation. A declined request should be treated as a declined request, not as permission for the app to place the icon anyway. Once pinned, the user can remove the entry, and an app can update its contents.

These are developer implementation paths; users do not need to configure a manifest or publish anything to use shortcuts already offered by an app. The distinction matters because static resources, runtime-published shortcuts and user-approved pins have different owners and update behavior.
Why the intent and destination matter
A shortcut is only useful if it opens the intended action. The intent or intents associated with it determine what happens when someone selects it. Android’s documentation notes that a shortcut can reference more than one intent, and that static shortcuts have task and back-stack behavior that differs from dynamic shortcuts. Consequently, developers should follow Android’s task and intent guidance for the specific shortcut type rather than assume all shortcuts navigate identically.
For users, this is why two shortcuts that look similar can behave differently: one may open a screen directly, while another takes a route through app navigation. The key promise of a shortcut is a direct entry point to an app task, not a universal guarantee about which screens remain behind it or how the Back button behaves. Those details depend on the app’s implementation and shortcut type.

Shortcuts, Google surfaces and privacy
A shortcut visible in a launcher menu is not automatically available everywhere Google offers actions. Android’s overview describes additional capabilities and Assistant surfaces, but also says that some dynamic shortcuts published only for launchers are not discoverable on other Google surfaces. Treat launcher visibility and availability in Assistant or another surface as separate integration questions; the app must support the relevant surface.

Shortcut metadata also has a privacy implication. Android warns that the launcher can access shortcut metadata, so an app should not put sensitive user information in shortcut labels or other metadata. For a user, this is a reason not to assume that a contact name, private message detail or other revealing text used to describe a shortcut remains visible only inside the app. The warning concerns metadata exposed to the launcher, not a claim that the launcher can read all of an app’s private content.
If a shortcut is missing or pinning does not work
When an expected shortcut is absent, first identify which kind you expected: an item in the app icon’s long-press menu, or a separate pinned icon. Then check the factors that govern that specific case.
- No long-press menu or no actions listed: The launcher may expose shortcuts differently, or the app may not provide any. Android does not require every app to publish shortcuts.
- An action is missing from the menu: Dynamic shortcuts can change as the app updates its contextual list. The launcher may also display fewer shortcuts than the API can support.
- Pinning is unavailable: The default launcher must support pinning. Availability is not guaranteed across launchers or devices.
- A pin request does not add an icon: The user must confirm the request. If the request was declined, the app cannot treat that as an approved pin.
- A shortcut opens an unexpected route: The selected shortcut’s intent and task behavior are defined by the app. The Android documentation distinguishes static and dynamic task behavior, so this is not governed by one universal navigation rule.
These checks separate an app’s choices from launcher support. If a shortcut is missing, there may be no user-side setting that can create it; the app has to provide the action, and pinning additionally depends on launcher support and approval.

Android app shortcuts are direct links into app actions. A long-press menu commonly exposes app-defined static and dynamic shortcuts, while a pinned shortcut appears as a separate icon after a supported launcher receives and the user approves a pin request. Availability, display count and cross-surface discovery are not uniform, so a shortcut’s presence in one place does not guarantee its presence everywhere.
