Open every strap, place your foot on the footbed, and buckle the straps so they hold your foot without pressing tightly. BIRKENSTOCK’s product-care guidance suggests about 5 mm of space under the front strap and about 10 mm under the second strap. Treat those as starting points, then adjust for comfort; check the footbed fit separately.
Adjust the straps step by step
- Open the straps. Set your foot on the open footbed in its natural position.
- Buckle each strap comfortably. Avoid pulling the leather or material tight against your foot. The buckle should hold the sandal in place without creating pressure.
- Check the clearances. BIRKENSTOCK’s product-care instructions suggest about 5 mm between your foot and the front strap, and about 10 mm at the second strap. These are approximate guides; make small changes based on how the sandal feels and how its straps are designed.
The brand describes the sequence this way: “Start by opening the straps and placing your foot on the open footbed. Then adjust the strap at the front so that there’s about 5 mm of space between the strap and your foot. Now the second strap: leave about 10 mm of space. How does it feel? Just right? Too tight? Too loose? Just adjust the straps as necessary.”

Check footbed fit separately
Strap clearance is not the same as the space between your foot and the edge of the footbed. BIRKENSTOCK’s U.S. fit guide suggests about ¼ inch around the foot at the footbed edge and says your toes should not touch that edge. If a toe reaches the edge, check your foot placement and sandal size rather than tightening the straps to compensate.

Break in a new pair gradually
For new sandals, begin with looser straps to reduce pressure points. BIRKENSTOCK’s U.S. fit guide recommends wearing them around the house for 1–2 hours at a time, then increasing wear gradually and tightening the straps as the footbed molds to your feet. The brand does not give a universal number of days for break-in, so let comfort guide the pace. Loosen a strap if it presses or causes a pressure point; pain is not a necessary step.

Troubleshoot a fit that still feels wrong
The strap is too loose at the buckle
If a strap remains loose at its tightest usable buckle setting, BIRKENSTOCK’s UK width FAQ says extra holes can be punched. The FAQ does not specify who should make them, so consider a shoe-repair professional rather than improvising if you are unsure.
Your foot has too much room from side to side
Revisit the width instead of tightening the straps until they squeeze. The UK FAQ says noticeable space on either side can indicate that narrow width is needed. A narrow fit still leaves some side space; your foot should not slide up along the sides of the footbed.

You are choosing between regular and narrow
BIRKENSTOCK describes regular and narrow widths for most models, and says straps and buckles are individually adjustable on its Norway width information page. Width availability depends on the model and market, so check the specific sandal rather than assuming both options are offered.
