Copying a video onto an EC2 instance does not, by itself, add it to a YouTube live stream. To change what viewers see without restarting, keep the encoder’s connection to YouTube open and add the file to the active playout system’s queue or media source. The exact steps depend on the encoder and queue implementation; there is no universal hot-add command for an unspecified EC2 setup.
Understand what needs to stay running
A YouTube encoder sends live content to YouTube using a server URL and stream key. The video files and the process that selects what the encoder plays are separate from that outgoing connection. Uploading a file to the EC2 filesystem only makes it available on the server; your playout system must also recognize and select it before it can appear in the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

For a no-restart change, preserve the encoder’s existing output session and update the media sequence feeding it. YouTube’s guidance says to stop sending content from the encoder to end a stream, so stopping or restarting the sender can interrupt or end the live session.

Add a video while preserving the encoder session
- Identify the running components. Determine which encoder sends to YouTube, how it is launched, and which process or controller selects the files. Record the operating system, encoder command or configuration, and the current queue or watched-folder behavior before changing anything.
- Confirm the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and configure the encoder with the stream server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential. If you reset it, update the encoder configuration with the replacement key; YouTube says a key for the current settings can be reset in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Keep the sender connected. Do not stop the encoder’s YouTube output if the goal is to continue the same live session. Make the change through the playout component or controller that feeds the encoder, rather than by restarting the sender.
- Upload the file and add it to playout. Copy the video to a location the playout system can access, then use that system’s queue, playlist, or media-source controls to schedule it. Confirm that the system has recognized the file and that it is next in the sequence. The queue mechanism is specific to your encoder and setup.
- Verify the change. Check the encoder’s output and YouTube’s live preview to confirm the new file is playing. Test the queue change in your actual configuration before relying on it for continuous playback; a seamless transition is not guaranteed by the fact that the file was uploaded.
What if the stream uses FFmpeg?
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a list of compatible files sequentially. The files need compatible streams, codecs, and time bases for the sequence to work as intended. However, FFmpeg’s documentation does not promise that an already-running process will reload a concat list after you edit it. Adding a filename to a list on disk is therefore not a general no-restart method.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
If your existing FFmpeg command reads a concat list, verify its behavior in a test stream before changing production playout. To add files dynamically without interrupting output, use a queue or controller designed to update the media being fed to the encoder, or choose an implementation whose behavior you have confirmed. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Choose the right architecture for the queue
- EC2-hosted encoder and playout: Keep the current workflow if you already operate it and can update its queue without stopping the YouTube-facing sender. The procedure depends on the specific encoder, operating system, launch method, and queue.
- AWS Elemental MediaLive: MediaLive is a managed media service, not simply an FFmpeg process on EC2. AWS documents RTMP push and other input types, and its solution can encode and originate adaptive-bitrate HLS delivery. That is a different architecture from adding files to a local EC2 playlist; choose it only if its managed workflow fits your needs. See MediaLive input types and the AWS live streaming solution overview.
Decide based on whether you need to retain your EC2 workflow, whether the input is a sequence of local files or a live source, how often new files need to be added, and what interruption behavior your chosen playout method supports. Costs and performance depend on the particular workload and configuration.

Troubleshooting
- The file is on EC2 but viewers still see the old video: The upload did not update the active playout sequence. Add the file through the queue or media-source mechanism and confirm it is scheduled.
- The new file is rejected or playback fails: Check whether the playout system can read the file and whether its streams, codecs, and time bases are compatible with the other files in an FFmpeg concat sequence.
- Editing the concat list has no effect: The active FFmpeg process may not reload the list. The documentation does not establish hot-reloading; use a verified queue/controller or test a different implementation.
- The YouTube stream ends during a change: Check whether the encoder stopped sending content or its output session was restarted. Keep the sender connected when continuous playback is required.
- The encoder can no longer connect after a key change: Update its configuration with the current stream key from YouTube Studio and verify the server URL and output settings.
- The preview does not confirm the change: Check both the encoder’s output and YouTube’s live preview, and verify that the queue recognized the new file before assuming it is playing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an EC2 encoder and playout queue, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the videos in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
