On YouTube, add chapters to an archived live stream by editing the video’s description in YouTube Studio and adding timestamp-and-title lines. The list must start at 00:00, contain at least three timestamps in ascending order, and give each chapter at least 10 seconds. First confirm that the stream was archived; YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
YouTube: add chapters to an archived stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Content, select the archived stream, and edit its description.
- Add one timestamp and title per line. Start with
00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make sure each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. For example:00:00 Introduction 05:42 Main topic 18:10 Questions and answers - Save the description, then check the public or preview playback to confirm that the chapter divisions and labels appear at the intended points.
Use times that match the actual archive. YouTube’s documented chapter input is the description; stream markers are a separate aid for creating highlights, not a substitute for adding the chapter list. If you used markers while live, locate the corresponding points in the archive and enter those times in the description.

If chapters do not appear
Chapter availability can depend on feature access and video eligibility. YouTube says channels without chapter access can apply for advanced features. Automatic chapters are optional and are not available on every video; active strikes or content deemed inappropriate for some viewers can also make the feature unavailable. A manual timestamp list overrides automatic chapters. See YouTube Help: Video chapters and YouTube Help: stream markers.
Confirm that YouTube saved the archive
Check YouTube Studio under Content > Live after the broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. You can change the archive’s visibility from its details. See YouTube Help: archive live streams.

Twitch: category-change chapters
Enable Past Broadcasts in your stream settings if you want Twitch to save broadcasts as VODs. Twitch’s built-in chapters mark category changes, not custom post-stream sections. If the categories did not change at the moments you want to mark, the cited Twitch guidance does not offer a manual post-stream chapter editor. Download or export a VOD before its retention window expires if you need to keep it or chapter it elsewhere. See Twitch Help: On-Demand Content on Twitch.
Vimeo: automatic suggestions and manual chapters
For an eligible archived live event, Vimeo’s automatic suggestions are available on Enterprise when the content is in English and contains at least 300 words. After transcription finishes, open the video’s Interactive tab, then Chapters. Edit suggested titles or timestamps and select Apply, or add chapters manually.
