How to Add Tubeless Sealant Without Making a Mess

For a clean tubeless sealant top-up, inject through the valve when the formula and removable valve core allow it. Otherwise, follow the product’s pour-in instructions.

For a clean top-up, inject sealant through the valve if the product allows it and the valve has a removable core. If the formula cannot pass through the valve—or you are installing a tire—use the product’s direct-pour method instead. Sealant instructions differ, so check them before choosing a method.

Choose the method that fits your tire and sealant

Situation Method What to check
Top up a mounted tire Inject through the valve The sealant must be injectable and the valve core removable. Stan’s describes adding its sealant through the open valve with an injector or its 60 ml bottle. Stan’s instructions
Formula is not suitable for valve injection Pour through a small opening in the tire bead Follow that sealant’s instructions. Stan’s says Race Day Sealant must be poured directly into the tire, not injected through the valve. Stan’s instructions
Installing a tire Use the specified installation method, which may involve pouring before the bead is fully seated SILCA’s initial installation procedure leaves part of the bead open for pouring, then rotates the wheel slowly and completes mounting. SILCA’s tubeless guide

A brand can specify different methods for different products or tasks: SILCA describes valve injection for its replenisher during maintenance, but a pour-in procedure for initial installation. Do not assume all sealants can pass through a valve.

How to inject sealant through the valve

  1. Check compatibility first. Read the sealant instructions and the tire and rim guidance. Confirm that the installed valve core can be removed; Stan’s advises following the rim and tire manufacturers’ guidance. Stan’s support center
  2. Prepare the tools. Set up a stable work area and have the measured sealant, injector, and valve-core tool ready before opening the bottle. The injector should connect to your valve and allow the sealant to flow.
  3. Deflate as directed and remove the valve core. Use a valve-core remover, then attach the injector according to its instructions.
  4. Add the measured amount slowly. A compatible injector can measure the sealant and thread directly onto the valve; Stan’s describes this as a no-mess application method. Stan’s instructions
  5. Reinstall the core and inflate carefully. Stay within the tire and rim pressure limits. Follow the tire and rim makers’ directions for inflation and bead seating; SILCA cautions against overinflating while seating a bead. SILCA’s tubeless guide
  6. Rotate the wheel. This helps distribute sealant around the tire so it can reach potential leak locations.

How to pour sealant without spilling it

Use this approach when the product requires direct pouring or when you are installing a tire using a pour-in procedure. Check the product directions for the correct amount and sequence before opening the tire.

  1. Leave open only the section of bead needed to pour in the sealant.
  2. Add the specified amount carefully, keeping the bottle and tire opening controlled.
  3. Rotate the wheel slowly if the manufacturer directs you to do so. SILCA’s installation guide recommends slow rotation to help avoid spills.
  4. Finish mounting the bead before inflating. Observe the tire and rim pressure limits, and do not overinflate to seat the bead.

How much sealant to add

Use the sealant maker’s amount for your tire size and product rather than treating one dose as universal. Stan’s NoTubes gives these starting examples on an undated support page accessed in 2026:

#1 Best Overall

Road or cyclocross tire 2 oz (60 ml)

Stan’s also points users to its volume guide and notes that a particularly porous, difficult-to-seal tire may need more. These figures are examples from Stan’s, not a general dose for every brand, tire, or installation. Stan’s support center

Tools and common causes of a messy top-up

  • Injector: The most direct tool for a clean valve top-up when the sealant is injectable. Check that its connector fits your valve.
  • Valve-core remover: Needed for the documented injection method; first confirm the core is removable.
  • Compatible sealant: Match the formula to your tire and rim, and verify whether it can be injected. A generic syringe may not fit the valve or allow the formula to flow.
  • Wrong method for the formula: Some sealants need to be poured into the tire. Forcing one through a valve can fail; follow the product’s directions.
  • Uncontrolled pouring or wheel movement: Keep the bead opening small and rotate slowly when instructed.

If the valve is incompatible, the core is not removable, or you do not want to open the bead, a bike shop can handle the service.
