Adding SynoCommunity as a package source lets you browse community-maintained software in Synology DSM’s Package Center without buying new hardware. The setup is straightforward, but these are third-party packages—not Synology-verified software—and you need to check each package against your NAS model, architecture, and DSM version.
What a Synology package source does
A package source is a repository address you add in DSM’s Package Center. Once configured, packages from that repository appear in the Community section, where you can browse or search for software. Synology describes Package Center as a place to find and install packages for a system; the available choices depend on the NAS model and software environment (Synology’s Package Center overview).

SynoCommunity is one such source. It provides community-maintained packages, but being listed in Package Center does not mean Synology has reviewed or endorsed a package.

- Sign in to DSM and open Package Center.
- Open Settings, select Package Sources, then choose Add.
- Enter a name such as SynoCommunity and set the location to
https://packages.synocommunity.com. - Save the source, then open the Community page in Package Center. On first access, give the package list time to load.
- Open the details for a package you are considering and check its model, architecture, and DSM requirements before installing it.
These are the source setup steps documented by SynoCommunity; Synology also explains how to add sources and find Community packages in its Package Center installation guide. Exact interface wording can vary between DSM versions.

What the third-party warning means
On DSM 7, SynoCommunity says users should expect this warning: “The package is provided by third-party developers and not verified by Synology.” It is a notice about who supplies the software and who has not verified it—not an endorsement or a claim that every package is unsafe.
Before installing, consider who maintains the package, whether its project is active, what access or permissions it requests, whether it fits your NAS, and how it receives updates. Synology’s Package Center settings include update notifications and automatic-update options, but some packages may not support automatic updates. Synology also says beta packages are not recommended for commercial use; see its DSM 7 Package Center settings help.
Check compatibility before installing
Package availability is not universal. A package may be unavailable or unsuitable because of your NAS model, its processor architecture, DSM release, or the package’s maintenance status. Synology says Package Center presents packages compatible with a system model, while SynoCommunity provides its own compatibility guidance (SynoCommunity documentation).

Pay particular attention when moving between major DSM releases. SynoCommunity warns that packages not updated for the transition may stop working when upgrading from DSM 6.2 to DSM 7.0. Treat compatibility as something to verify for the specific package and NAS—not something guaranteed by the presence of a listing.

DSM also supports installing a package file, commonly an SPK, from a local computer. This can help if the NAS cannot reach a repository or you need a specific package file. It gives you more control over which file you install, but you must find a trustworthy source and confirm that the SPK matches your NAS. Synology documents the manual upload route in its Package Center installation instructions; SynoCommunity also documents manual installation in its installation guide.
Home Assistant is a case where package choice matters
SynoCommunity’s Home Assistant documentation describes a Home Assistant Core package, but recommends deploying Home Assistant in a container on Synology instead. The documentation says Core lacks features including add-ons and integrated updates, and states that Home Assistant Core will not be supported as an installation method from Home Assistant version 2025.12. Those qualifications are specific to the project’s documented package and version; check the current SynoCommunity Home Assistant page before choosing a deployment method.
Quick Recap
Package source or manual SPK?
| Installation path | Useful when | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Add a package source | You want to browse and install available packages through Package Center. | Convenient discovery, but you still need to assess the third-party publisher, package maintenance, and compatibility. |
| Install an SPK manually | You have a local package file, restricted internet access, or need a particular version. | More control over the file and version, with greater responsibility for verifying its source and NAS compatibility. |
