To add subtitles in VLC, start playing the video, open Subtitle, choose the command to add a subtitle file, and select your subtitle file. If subtitles are already built into the video, choose the track you want from the subtitle track list instead. Menu wording can vary by VLC version, operating system, and interface language.

Choose between an external subtitle file and an embedded track

Option Where the subtitles are How to use them What to check
External subtitle file In a separate file, such as an SRT. Use the Subtitle menu command to add a subtitle file, then browse to and select it. Confirm that you chose the intended file and that VLC can read its format.
Embedded subtitle track Inside the video file or disc content. Open the subtitle track list and select the desired track. In VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0, the route is Video > Subtitle Track. Track descriptions, such as language, may be available. Choose the track that matches your needs.

VideoLAN documents both adding a subtitle file and selecting a subtitle track in the Subtitle menu overview: VLC subtitles and VLC menu functions. Another route in the documented 3.0 desktop interface is Open Multiple Files, where you can enable the option to use a subtitle file. Labels and locations may differ in other builds.

VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 lists .cdg, .idx, .srt, .sub, .utf, .ass, .ssa, .aqt, .jss, .psb, .rt, and .smi as supported subtitle formats. This documented list does not guarantee that every variant or malformed file will display correctly. The guide also discusses MicroDVD, SubRIP, SubViewer, SSA, Sami, and VobSub: VideoLAN’s subtitle guide.

Important: selecting VobSub files

VobSub subtitles use image-based data. When adding this subtitle type, select the .idx file, not the .sub file, as the guide instructs.

Select subtitles already included with the video

Some supported media can contain subtitle tracks; VideoLAN’s 3.0 guide names DVD, SVCD, OGM, and Matroska (MKV) as examples. Open the subtitle track list and select the track you want. If available, use its language or other description to distinguish tracks. A track may be present but not enabled, so check the list before loading a separate file.

DVD and SVCD subtitles are images rather than ordinary rendered text. That distinction matters if you later want to change the font or color.

Fix subtitles that are out of sync

First identify the direction of the mismatch: if the subtitle appears after the corresponding speech, adjust it earlier; if it appears before the speech, adjust it later. Make a small change, replay a spoken line, and repeat until the text matches.

Adjustment method How it works Scope and trade-off
Keyboard shortcut During playback, press h or g to change the subtitle delay in 50 ms steps, according to VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ. Useful for incremental corrections. This shortcut guidance is Windows-specific; it may not apply on other platforms or customized keyboard layouts.
Enter a numerical delay In VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0, open Tools > Track Synchronization > Synchronization and enter a delay value. Lets you specify a direct value instead of relying only on repeated key presses. Menu labels may vary by build.

Sources: VideoLAN’s synchronization guide and VideoLAN’s Windows FAQ. If the shortcut has no effect, find the synchronization controls in your installed version or check its active hotkey settings.

Troubleshoot missing, partial, or garbled subtitles

No subtitles appear

Characters are wrong or some text is missing

A text-encoding mismatch can make characters display incorrectly or leave some subtitle text missing. VideoLAN’s FAQs recommend changing the subtitle text encoding in preferences. The Windows FAQ gives the path Tools > Preferences > Subtitles/OSD; the general FAQ describes the setting under input/codecs subtitle settings. The precise path can vary by version. See the Windows FAQ and VLC FAQ.

Change subtitle appearance

For text-based subtitle formats, VLC’s Windows FAQ documents controls for font, size, style, and color under Tools > Preferences > Subtitles/OSD. These controls do not restyle image-based subtitles as text, including the DVD and SVCD image subtitles described in VideoLAN’s desktop subtitle guide.

If the settings are not in that location, check the subtitle or on-screen display preferences in your version of VLC; labels and menu paths can differ across platforms and builds.
