How to Add Stripe Payments to a WordPress Site with WooCommerce

A complete, current guide to adding Stripe payments to a WooCommerce-powered WordPress site, from prerequisites and hosted account connection to testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

The most reliable supported route for a WordPress store is WooCommerce’s official Stripe Payment Gateway extension. Install the extension, connect a Stripe account from WooCommerce > Settings > Payments, complete the hosted Stripe connection, verify webhooks, configure eligible payment methods, and test every checkout and order workflow before switching to live mode.

What you need before connecting Stripe

Stripe processing is not available in every market, and the business must be located in a Stripe-supported country. Your WordPress installation also needs current versions of PHP, WordPress, and WooCommerce, plus a valid SSL certificate and working HTTPS throughout the site. These are operational requirements, not optional hardening: customers should never enter payment information on an HTTP checkout page.

Requirement What to verify Why it matters
Stripe eligibility Your business country, settlement currency, and account can use Stripe. Stripe, not WooCommerce, decides country and account eligibility.
WordPress stack PHP, WordPress, and WooCommerce are on currently supported versions. The gateway depends on compatibility between all three components.
HTTPS An SSL certificate is installed, valid, and enforced on checkout, account, and site pages. Secure transport is required for payment forms and wallet verification.
Administrator access You can install extensions and open WooCommerce payment settings. Connection and webhook setup require store-administrator permissions.
Stripe account Use an existing account or be ready to create one during the hosted connection flow. The extension sends you to Stripe to authenticate and authorize the connection.

Back up the site and record the current WooCommerce and PHP versions before changing the payment stack. If HTTPS or software updates are not available on your host, resolve that first; installing a gateway on an outdated or insecure site creates failures that are difficult to diagnose at checkout.

Use the official WooCommerce Stripe extension

For a site that already uses WooCommerce, the official WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway extension is the implementation documented by WooCommerce. It integrates checkout, order status changes, refunds, supported wallets, local methods, and Stripe webhooks without requiring you to write payment code.

The WordPress.org plugin listing showed 23 payment methods when accessed in 2026. Stripe Marketplace listed 24+ methods in 45+ countries at the same time. Those counts are catalog figures, not a promise that every method will appear in your store: account type, customer country, currency, product, risk controls, and Stripe configuration can all change availability.

If the site does not run WooCommerce, this extension is not a general WordPress donation button or a universal form builder. A non-WooCommerce implementation needs a different Stripe product or integration, and the WooCommerce setup steps below do not apply to it.

Install and connect Stripe step by step

  1. Install the extension. In WordPress, install and activate the official WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway extension. Confirm that WooCommerce itself is active and that the site loads over HTTPS before continuing.
  2. Open the payment settings. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments. Find Stripe in the list of available gateways and select it.
  3. Start the connection. Click Complete setup. WooCommerce starts Stripe’s hosted connection flow rather than asking you to paste secret keys into a WordPress form.
  4. Sign in or create the account. Authenticate the Stripe account that will receive the store’s funds. If you create a new account, provide the business, identity, bank, and tax information Stripe requests for your country.
  5. Authorize the store. Review the account and website details shown by Stripe, approve the connection, and return to WordPress. Do not close the browser while the authorization redirect is in progress.
  6. Confirm webhooks. Webhooks are part of the documented connection setup. Check the Stripe settings screen for a connected webhook status and resolve any endpoint or signing error before accepting real orders.
  7. Save the gateway. Return to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe, review the available options, and save changes. The exact fields shown can change as the extension is updated.

A connected account is not the same as a tested checkout. Connection authorizes communication between WooCommerce and Stripe; testing proves that payment events, refunds, and order-state changes travel correctly in both directions.

Configure the gateway after connection

Once the account and webhooks are connected, the extension’s settings are under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe. Use this screen for store-level payment-method and checkout options. Account-level controls, such as Radar rules, are managed in the Stripe Dashboard.

Set the customer-facing gateway details

  • Give the gateway a clear title and description so customers recognize the payment option.
  • Keep the gateway enabled only when the store is ready to receive and reconcile orders.
  • Check that the store currency and Stripe account settlement setup agree. A method can disappear when the currency is unsupported even though the account itself is connected.
  • Review any express-checkout placement options so wallet buttons do not cover product, cart, or checkout controls on mobile screens.

Choose payment methods deliberately

Enable only methods that match your customers, products, shipping destinations, and refund process. Stripe determines whether a method is available for the connected account; the extension cannot override a country or currency restriction.

Category Examples supported by the extension Eligibility notes
Cards Credit and debit cards Core card acceptance still depends on the Stripe account and customer location.
Express checkout Apple Pay, WeChat Pay, Cash App Pay Wallet display depends on device, browser, customer account, domain verification, and other Stripe requirements.
Local methods Alipay, Boleto, SEPA Country, currency, customer location, and settlement rules determine whether a method appears.
Buy now, pay later Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna Availability and eligibility vary by account, transaction, country, currency, and risk decision.

Do not promise a fixed menu of methods in marketing copy. The payment-method catalog changes, and a customer may see a different set from an administrator testing in another country or currency.

Understand fees, refunds, and order updates

WooCommerce provides the integration; Stripe determines transaction fees. Your actual rate depends on the Stripe account, payment method, country, and commercial terms in effect for that account. The extension does not create one universal WooCommerce fee schedule.

Use WooCommerce order administration for the store’s operational record and the Stripe Dashboard for processor-side details. A successful payment should produce a corresponding WooCommerce order status, while a refund should be visible in the order record and in Stripe. Reconcile both systems rather than relying on a single screen.

For subscriptions or recurring products, verify that the current extension version and your chosen WooCommerce subscription component support the exact recurring-payment flow you need. The available facts for this integration establish payment-method and webhook support, but they do not guarantee that every subscription configuration, trial, renewal, or dispute workflow is supported without additional WooCommerce components.

Test before switching to live mode

Use a Stripe test account or test mode to exercise the complete checkout before enabling live payments. The purpose is not merely to see a green “payment successful” message; it is to prove that the customer, WooCommerce, Stripe, and webhook events agree.

  1. Put the connection in test mode. Use the extension’s test setting and the corresponding Stripe test account or test environment. Never enter real card details into a test form, and never use live credentials in a staging site that is publicly indexed.
  2. Complete a successful card payment. Place an order as a normal customer, confirm the checkout result, and verify the order status and transaction reference in WooCommerce and Stripe.
  3. Exercise a declined payment. Use Stripe’s documented test scenario for a failed card and confirm that the customer sees a useful error, the order is not falsely marked paid, and stock is handled according to your WooCommerce settings.
  4. Check asynchronous updates. Allow time for webhook events, then refresh the order and Stripe records. A payment that succeeds in the browser but never updates the order usually indicates a webhook, URL, firewall, or credential problem.
  5. Test a refund. Refund from the workflow your staff will use, then verify the refund amount, order status, customer notification, and Stripe transaction record.
  6. Test each enabled express method. Apple Pay, WeChat Pay, and Cash App Pay require an eligible device, browser, account, and domain configuration. Test on the same kinds of devices your customers use.
  7. Test each enabled local or installment method. Confirm that the method appears for the intended country and currency and that the order returns to WooCommerce with the expected status.
  8. Repeat on mobile. Check wallet buttons, validation messages, redirects, and back-button behavior on a phone. A desktop success does not establish mobile usability.

WooCommerce publishes separate testing and administrator-experience guidance. Follow the current version of that documentation when test-mode labels or screens differ from the ones shown in your installation. Do not switch to live mode until every enabled method has an owner, a refund procedure, and a reconciliation check.

Go-live checklist

  • Live mode is selected in the extension and the connected Stripe account is the production account.
  • The site, checkout, account, and payment-return pages all force HTTPS with a valid certificate.
  • Webhook status is healthy, and your firewall, security plugin, or host is not blocking Stripe event requests.
  • Store currency, country, tax, shipping, and product settings match the payment methods you intend to offer.
  • At least one successful live-mode transaction has been reconciled by an authorized staff member, if your launch procedure permits a small real order.
  • Staff know where to view orders, issue refunds, answer failed-payment questions, and escalate a dispute.
  • Express-wallet domains and any required verification are complete.
  • Test data, test keys, and test-mode notices are removed from customer-facing pages.
  • Backups, update access, and a rollback plan are available before updating the extension or WooCommerce.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most

Stripe is missing from the Payments screen

Confirm that WooCommerce and the Stripe extension are active, PHP and WordPress meet current compatibility requirements, and the administrator account can manage WooCommerce settings. A fatal error or incomplete plugin update can also prevent a gateway from registering; check the WordPress and WooCommerce logs before reinstalling anything.

The setup flow returns an error

Verify the site URL, HTTPS certificate, browser pop-up and redirect behavior, and the Stripe account you selected. Try the connection from a clean administrator session, then inspect whether a security layer is blocking the return request. Do not paste random API keys from another account as a workaround; reconnect the intended account through Complete setup.

The account is connected but orders remain pending

This symptom commonly points to webhook delivery rather than card authorization. Check the webhook status in the Stripe settings, confirm that the site is publicly reachable over HTTPS, and review host, firewall, caching, and security-plugin logs for blocked requests. Compare the event and order identifiers in Stripe and WooCommerce before retrying an order.

A payment method does not appear

Check the customer’s billing country, store currency, product type, account eligibility, and the method’s enabled status. Test with an eligible account and device. A method listed by Stripe or the plugin may still be hidden for a particular transaction.

A wallet button is absent

Wallets require more than an enabled checkbox. Check HTTPS, domain verification, supported browser and device conditions, the customer’s wallet setup, and whether another checkout customization is hiding the button. Test outside an administrator session, because extensions and cache tools can change what logged-in users see.

Refunds do not match the order

Confirm whether the refund was initiated in WooCommerce or Stripe and whether the extension supports that direction for the transaction. Compare the original charge, refund amount, currency, and order identifier in both systems; partial refunds and multiple refunds must be reconciled individually.

Keep the integration maintained

Payment integrations change more often than ordinary content plugins because processor APIs, authentication, wallets, local methods, and security requirements evolve. Review updates for WordPress, PHP, WooCommerce, the Stripe extension, and your host before applying them to production; test the payment flow on staging when possible.

WooCommerce’s dated notice states: “After July 1, 2025, Stripe and WooCommerce will no longer be making important performance and feature enhancements to this integration.” That statement is a reason to monitor current extension releases and documentation, not a reason to leave a working store unpatched. Payment-method support and compatibility can change, so verify the current status before planning a migration, enabling a new method, or upgrading a major component.

When this setup is the right choice

Choose the official extension when the site already runs WooCommerce and you want a maintained connection with hosted account authorization, webhook handling, cards, wallets, local methods, and eligible buy-now-pay-later options. It minimizes custom payment code and keeps routine order operations inside WooCommerce.

Choose a different implementation only after documenting why WooCommerce is not suitable: for example, a non-commerce WordPress site, a custom booking workflow, or a checkout that needs controls the extension does not expose. In that case, evaluate the alternative against setup complexity, payment-method breadth, webhook automation, recurring-payment support, country and currency eligibility, checkout control, and long-term maintenance. The official WooCommerce extension should not be forced onto a site that does not use WooCommerce.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add Stripe to WordPress without WooCommerce?

The official WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway is designed for WooCommerce stores. A WordPress site without WooCommerce needs a different Stripe product or integration; the WooCommerce connection steps do not apply.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are fewer payment methods visible than the plugin listing mentions?

Published counts are catalogs. Stripe filters methods by account, country, currency, customer location, device, product, and configuration, so your checkout can show fewer options.

Is connecting the Stripe account enough to launch?

No. You must verify webhooks, test successful and failed payments, refunds, order-status updates, and every enabled wallet or local method before selecting live mode.

Who charges the payment-processing fee?

Stripe determines transaction fees for the connected account. WooCommerce supplies the integration but does not set one universal processing rate.
