To put a name, topic, or social handle on your YouTube livestream, add a text source or overlay in your streaming encoder, position it in the scene, and preview it before going live. “Stream labels” can also mean video tags or shoppable product tags; those are different features and do not put informational text over the video.
Choose the kind of label you mean
- On-screen text: A name, topic, handle, or other wording visible in the video. Add this in your encoder or an overlay tool.
- Video tags: Descriptive keywords attached to the stream’s metadata. Edit these in YouTube’s live stream settings; they do not appear over the picture. YouTube says tags generally have minimal effect on discovery except for common misspellings. YouTube’s live stream settings help explains the metadata options.
- Shopping product tags: Product listings viewers may shop from an eligible creator’s live stream. They are not informational text overlays. See YouTube’s live Shopping instructions for eligibility and the computer workflow.
Add informational text in your encoder
- Decide what the label should say. Keep it short enough to read at the size viewers will see it, and avoid covering faces, captions, gameplay information, or other important content.
- Open the scene you plan to stream. In your encoder, add a text source or a supported overlay source. The exact control names and steps depend on the encoder and its version, so use its current documentation if you need product-specific directions.
- Place and size the label. Position it within the visible frame, check contrast against the background, and leave space around the edges so it is not obscured by player controls or cropped in different layouts.
- Preview before broadcasting. Check the label in the encoder preview and, where possible, with a private or unlisted test stream. Confirm spelling, legibility, placement, and that it appears in the intended scene.
A basic text source is a good fit for wording that stays the same. If the text needs to change automatically or you want a packaged set of graphics and alerts, compare overlay tools for dynamic updates, customization, encoder compatibility, setup effort, and whether the relevant feature is included in your current plan. YouTube’s tools directory lists Streamlabs as a tool that supports on-stream notification popups and adding labels to scenes; check its current interface and feature availability before following product-specific steps: YouTube’s gaming and live-streaming tools directory. Use YouTube’s browser-source instructions for its break overlay
YouTube documents a browser-source setup for its own Take a Break overlay in Live Control Room. This is a break slate feature, not a universal generator for custom name or topic labels. For that specific overlay:

- In Live Control Room settings, copy the overlay URL.
- In your encoder, add a browser source and paste the URL.
- Set the browser source width and height to match your stream resolution.
- Enable Shutdown source when not visible, if your encoder provides that option.
- Test the overlay before going live. Browser-source behavior and available controls can differ between encoders.

Troubleshoot labels that do not appear correctly
- The text is missing from the stream: Check that the source is enabled and included in the active scene, and that it is not hidden behind another source.
- The label is clipped or hard to read: Adjust its position and size in the scene, check it against the actual stream resolution, and preview it at a viewer-sized scale.
- A browser overlay is blank or behaves inconsistently: Confirm the URL and browser-source dimensions, then test with the encoder’s current browser-source support. YouTube notes that encoders do not all support browser sources in the same way.
- You expected keywords or products to show on screen: Video tags are metadata, while Shopping tags are product links for eligible creators. Use an encoder text source for visible informational wording.
