YouTube Studio manages the broadcast and live chat; OBS puts the label into the scene viewers see. Many provider-overlay workflows do not require an OBS plugin.
Choose the right kind of label
A stream label displays a piece of information, such as the latest follower or subscriber. It is different from an alert, which announces an event, and from live chat, which displays audience messages. A simple, unchanging name or message can be added as ordinary text in your scene; a label that changes with events needs a provider or integration that supports the event and your YouTube account.

Before configuring anything, confirm that the provider supports the specific YouTube event you want. Do not assume a label or event type documented for another platform will work with YouTube. OBS describes provider-configured overlays and lists Streamlabs, StreamElements, NerdOrDie, and OWN3D Pro as examples of overlay providers; that is not a guarantee that every provider or widget supports every platform or label type. OBS’s overlay tutorial explains the general setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAdd a provider overlay to an OBS scene
- Configure the label with its provider. Choose the information to display and set its appearance using the provider’s current controls.
- Copy the overlay URL. Depending on the provider, it may be called an Overlay URL, Widget URL, or Alert URL.
- Open the intended scene in OBS. In the Sources panel, select the plus button and add a Browser source.
- Paste the URL and set dimensions. Enter the copied URL in the source’s URL field, set its width and height to fit the overlay, and save.
- Check the scene before going live. Confirm the label appears in the preview, is readable, and is not covered by another source. If possible, verify the result in the broadcast before relying on it.
This Browser-source method is the normal route for provider-hosted overlays and does not, by itself, require an OBS plugin. YouTube Studio remains where you manage the broadcast; it is not the editor for labels embedded in an OBS scene. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup help for broadcast controls.

Use Streamlabs Stream Labels in the OBS plugin
Streamlabs documents a plugin workflow that puts label controls inside OBS. Its quick-start guide lists Windows and OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later as requirements. Check the current guide for compatibility before installing, since software requirements can change. Streamlabs’ plugin quick-start guide has the current documented procedure.
- Install the Streamlabs plugin and open Streamlabs from OBS’s top menu.
- Select Stream Labels, then choose Add a Stream Label.
- Pick the label you want. If needed, add it to additional scenes.
- To change its wording or variables, open the label menu, select Edit, make the changes, and save.
Streamlabs notes that some plugin changes, such as adding an overlay, may require restarting OBS. If a label is hidden behind gameplay or another source, move it above that source in OBS’s Sources list.

Alternative: a StreamLabels app that writes text files
A separate Streamlabs support article, published December 9, 2021, describes an older route in which the StreamLabels app writes changing values to text files. In that workflow, you run the app, log in, choose an output folder, and add a text source in your streaming software that reads the relevant file—for example, most_recent_follower.txt. The app must remain running for real-time file updates. The article flags its embedded video as outdated, so check whether the app and your operating system are still supported before following this method: Streamlabs’ Stream Labels setup article.
Keep labels separate from YouTube chat
YouTube’s live chat is an audience-interaction feature, not a label editor. YouTube documents viewing and embedding live chat separately, while OBS describes displaying chat in a stream through third-party overlays and Browser sources. For YouTube chat controls, see YouTube’s live chat help; for adding a chat overlay in OBS, see OBS’s chat FAQ.

Troubleshoot a label that does not appear or update
- Nothing appears: Confirm the Browser source or text source is in the scene you are broadcasting, the URL or file path is correct, and the source dimensions are large enough to show the content.
- The label is behind other content: Move it higher in OBS’s Sources list so it is layered above the obstructing source.
- The label appears but shows the wrong value or never changes: Check the provider’s label configuration and its connection to the YouTube account and event type you intend to use. For the text-file method, verify the streaming software is reading the correct generated file and that the StreamLabels app is running.
- The plugin controls are missing or changes do not show: Check the plugin’s current platform and OBS-version requirements. For the Streamlabs plugin route, its guide says some changes may need an OBS restart.
These checks follow the documented setup paths; they do not imply that every provider uses the same settings or recovery behavior.
