Best Video Formats for Live Streaming: Codecs, Containers, and Protocols

For YouTube, H.264 video with AAC audio over RTMPS is a practical baseline—but the best live streaming format depends on the ingest protocol, encoder, and destination requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a straightforward YouTube live stream sent directly from an encoder, H.264 video with AAC audio is a practical starting point, usually over RTMPS. It is not a universal rule: the destination and ingest protocol determine which codecs and packaging are accepted. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, while its HLS workflow has different requirements.

What “video format” means for a live stream

“Format” can refer to three separate choices. Check each one against the platform and encoder rather than treating them as interchangeable.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Codec: how video or audio is compressed. Examples include H.264, HEVC (H.265), AV1, and AAC.
  • Container or segment format: how encoded audio and video are packaged. YouTube HLS ingest, for example, requires muxed M2TS media segments.
  • Ingest protocol: how the encoder sends the stream to the platform, such as RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, or DASH.

A protocol does not mean every codec or container will work with it. YouTube documents different combinations for RTMP/RTMPS and HLS, and managed delivery services can impose their own output-group restrictions.

Which format should you choose?

Workflow What it supports, according to the platform documentation Best fit and trade-off
YouTube RTMP/RTMPS H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR). RTMPS encrypts the connection. A practical direct-to-YouTube path. Choose a codec your encoder and YouTube ingest both support. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest.
YouTube HLS ingest Muxed M2TS; H.264 or HEVC video; single-track AAC audio; closed GOPs; up to 60 fps. Consider for high-quality or high-resolution workflows where segment-based ingest is suitable. It generally has more latency than RTMP.
YouTube DASH ingest The protocol comparison lists H.264 and VP9 and describes DASH as encrypted and better suited to higher resolutions than ultra-low-latency use. A segment-based option when resolution and workflow needs outweigh the need for very low latency.
Managed delivery or output Support varies by service and output group. AWS MediaLive, for example, documents H.264/AAC for RTMP/RTMPS and H.264/HEVC for HLS, among other output options. Follow the exact provider output-group specification; one provider’s codec support is not a universal platform rule.

For an ordinary YouTube encoder setup, start with H.264 video, AAC audio, and RTMPS, then use the current settings for your resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s guidance lists HEVC and AV1 too, but support depends on the complete encoder-to-platform workflow. The protocol comparison was last updated June 1, 2026; check the current platform guidance before configuring a production stream.

  • HDR: YouTube identifies H.265 as its HDR codec and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
  • Transport: prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.”

When HLS or DASH is the better fit

YouTube HLS

HLS is not simply RTMP with a different name: it is a segment-based ingest path with its own packaging rules. YouTube requires audio and video muxed into M2TS segments, H.264 or HEVC video, single-track AAC audio, closed GOPs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends media segments of one to four seconds and requires segments not to exceed five seconds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shorter segments can reduce latency, but may increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency. HLS ingest generally has higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC because it works in segments. Use it when its workflow or codec requirements fit the production, not just because a codec sounds more efficient.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

YouTube DASH

YouTube’s protocol comparison lists H.264 and VP9 for DASH, describes the protocol as encrypted, and positions it for higher-resolution use rather than ultra-low-latency streaming. DASH, like HLS, is segment-based. Check the current ingest specification and the exact capabilities of the encoder or managed service before committing to it.

Managed output services

If an encoder sends to a cloud delivery service before the platform, check both ends of the chain: the service’s accepted input and selected output group, and the destination platform’s ingest requirements. A service supporting HEVC in one output group does not establish that every route from that service accepts HEVC.

Choose based on the constraint that matters most

  • Broad, straightforward YouTube compatibility: use RTMPS with H.264 and AAC, configured to YouTube’s current bitrate, keyframe, and audio recommendations.
  • Bandwidth efficiency: compare the supported codec options and encoder quality at the target bitrate; YouTube’s listed recommendations differ by codec, but they are platform guidance, not an independent codec-quality test.
  • Latency: favor a suitable direct RTMP/RTMPS workflow over segment-based HLS or DASH when lower latency is important; confirm the destination’s available modes.
  • High resolution or HDR: verify codec, encoder, protocol, and destination support together. YouTube lists HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, while its guidance identifies HEVC for HDR and excludes AV1 HDR.
  • Encryption: use RTMPS for encrypted RTMP ingest where supported. Google’s protocol comparison also describes HLS and DASH as encrypted.
  • Exact packaging requirements: follow the platform’s specification for the selected protocol, including container, segment duration, audio tracks, and GOP structure.

Before you buy a hardware encoder

Do not choose a device based on a codec label alone. Match its supported codec and profile, protocol, maximum resolution and frame rate, HDR needs, audio options, and packaging to the destination’s ingest requirements. If a managed service is in the path, verify its specific input and output configuration too. The cited platform specifications establish settings, not endorsement or comparative performance of any particular encoder model.

Common setup problems

  • The platform rejects the stream: confirm the selected ingest protocol, codec, container or segment format, and audio track all match that protocol’s requirements. Do not assume a codec accepted over one protocol is accepted over another.
  • Connection instability or buffering: compare the encoder bitrate with the connection’s reliable upload capacity and other simultaneous traffic. Use the bitrate recommended for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than choosing a number from a different row.
  • Unexpected latency: check whether the workflow uses HLS or DASH segments. Segment duration affects latency and may also affect rebuffering and encoding efficiency.
  • Keyframe or GOP warnings: for RTMP/RTMPS, check YouTube’s two-second keyframe recommendation and four-second maximum. For HLS, verify closed GOPs and the segment requirements separately.
  • HDR does not work as expected: verify the codec path; YouTube’s guidance identifies HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
  • A managed workflow behaves differently than direct ingest: inspect the selected service output group and destination settings independently; provider support is configuration-specific.

Sources and current requirements

Platform ingest settings can change. Confirm the destination’s current documentation and your encoder’s current capabilities before going live. YouTube’s encoder settings and protocol guidance are at YouTube Live encoder settings and YouTube live streaming protocols. Its HLS requirements are documented at YouTube HLS ingest.
