To add a Steam Workshop map to a Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server, copy the map’s numeric Workshop ID and run host_workshop_map MAP_ID in the server console. For a repeatable group of maps, publish a public Workshop collection and add +host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID to the server’s startup parameters, then restart the server. The server downloads the content; players normally download the map automatically when they join.

What you need before adding a Workshop map
The procedure assumes you already have a CS2 dedicated server and administrative access to both its console and its startup configuration. You also need a current installation of the dedicated-server files. Steam Support states that “All Steam game servers now use SteamCMD to download and update game server files.” Update the server and SteamCMD files before troubleshooting Workshop content, because an outdated installation can make a valid map or command appear broken.

- Access to the running server console for one-off map commands.
- Access to the launch script, service definition, or control panel field that holds startup parameters.
- The Workshop item or collection you intend to load.
- The numeric Workshop ID copied from the item or collection URL.
- A normal CS2 map or map-cycle configuration that can act as a fallback while you test.
A Workshop item can be changed, removed, or made unavailable by its creator. Treat the Workshop page and the server’s own output as the current authority rather than relying on an old map name copied from a forum post.
How Workshop IDs work
CS2 server commands do not identify Workshop content by its display name. They use the number in the Workshop address. Open the desired map or collection, look at the address bar, and copy the numeric value following ?id=. Copy only the digits after id=; do not copy the question mark, the rest of the address, or a map title.

Map item ID
A single Workshop map has one numeric item ID. This is the value used with host_workshop_map. If you are testing one map for an event or a quick session, this is the only ID you need.
Collection ID
A Workshop collection has its own numeric ID, separate from every map inside it. Use the collection’s ID with +host_workshop_collection. Do not substitute the ID of one map in the collection; the server parameter expects the collection number.

- Open the Workshop map or collection page.
- Select the address-bar value after
?id=. - Copy the complete number without spaces or punctuation.
- Paste it into a temporary note and compare it with the value in your command or startup parameters.
This simple comparison catches the most common failure: a correctly typed command paired with the wrong item type or an incomplete ID.
Add one Workshop map from the server console
The single-map workflow is the fastest way to validate a map. It does not require changing the server’s permanent startup line, so it is suitable for a one-off test, an event, or an ad hoc map switch.
- Make sure the server is running and that you can enter commands in its server console.
- Copy the map’s numeric Workshop item ID as described above.
- Run
host_workshop_map MAP_ID, replacingMAP_IDwith the digits you copied. - Watch the server output while it obtains the Workshop content and changes the active map. Allow the operation to finish before issuing another map command.
- Run
ds_workshop_listmapsto inspect the Workshop maps the server currently knows about. - Connect with a test client and confirm that the map loads, the expected gameplay mode starts, and players can move around normally.
The command tells the server to obtain the selected Workshop map and switch to it. It is not a permanent rotation setting: a later map change, restart, or normal map-cycle rule can move the server elsewhere. Keep a standard map available so the server has a known destination if the Workshop load fails.
When a single-map command is the right choice
- One-time testing: You can test a map without editing startup files.
- Scheduled events: An administrator can load the event map shortly before players join.
- Quick diagnosis: A direct command isolates the map ID and download process from collection configuration.
If the same set of maps will be used repeatedly, move to a collection rather than relying on an administrator to type a command after every restart.

Load several maps with a Workshop collection
A collection is the practical choice for a repeatable group of maps. It gives you one place to add or remove items and one collection ID for the server configuration. The collection must be public before the server attempts to load it.
Create and publish the collection
- Open the Steam Workshop collection tools and create a new collection for the server’s maps.
- Add each intended CS2 map to the collection.
- Review the collection contents and remove maps you do not want the server to expose.
- Publish the collection and confirm that its visibility is public.
- Copy the numeric ID after
?id=in the collection’s address, not the ID of an individual map.
A private or otherwise inaccessible collection cannot serve as a dependable source for a public dedicated server. If you change the collection’s visibility, contents, or order, record the resulting collection ID and keep it with the server configuration.
Add the collection to startup parameters
- Stop the CS2 server if your hosting environment requires it before editing launch settings.
- Open the startup command, launch script, service definition, or control-panel field used to start CS2.
- Add
+host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID, replacingCOLLECTION_IDwith the collection’s numeric ID. - Save the startup configuration exactly as your server manager expects it.
- Restart the server. A startup-parameter change does not apply to an already-running process.
- Read the startup output and run
ds_workshop_listmapsafter the server is ready to verify that the expected Workshop maps are known.
Keep the parameter as one command-and-value pair. If your control panel has a separate field for additional launch options, enter the plus-prefixed command there rather than placing it in an unrelated map-name field.
Updating the collection later
To change the content set, edit the public collection rather than creating a new server command for every map. After making a material collection change, restart the server so it starts from a clean Workshop state, then inspect ds_workshop_listmaps and test the intended rotation. This also gives you a clear maintenance point for announcing map changes to players.

Use a map cycle for predictable rotation
Loading a collection and choosing the next map are related but different jobs. The collection makes Workshop maps available to the server. A map-cycle configuration determines the order in which maps are selected when the server rotates them. Steam’s dedicated-server configuration supports a map cycle, so use the server’s map-cycle settings when you need predictable rotation across the maps you have loaded.
Design the rotation deliberately
- Decide whether every map in the collection should be eligible or whether the rotation should contain only a selected subset.
- Keep the map-cycle entries consistent with the maps that the server reports through
ds_workshop_listmaps. - Include a normal, known-good map as a fallback during initial testing.
- Change one variable at a time: first confirm that the collection loads, then adjust the cycle order.
A collection is easier to maintain when it represents the complete content set, while the map cycle represents the schedule or order. Separating those responsibilities lets you update the collection without rewriting every rotation rule.

What players have to download
Valve’s CS2 Workshop FAQ says that friends joining a local server download the map automatically. The same principle means an administrator normally shares the server connection details instead of copying Workshop map files to every player manually. A player who joins may see a download or loading step before entering the map.
Automatic delivery still depends on the Workshop item being available and the server successfully loading it. If the server is stuck on a fallback map, cannot obtain the item, or has not completed its Workshop operation, clients cannot receive a usable map from that session. Test the complete join path with a client account before announcing an event.

| Workflow | Number of maps | Repeatability | Restart requirement | Updating content |
|---|---|---|---|---|
host_workshop_map MAP_ID |
One map at a time | Low; an administrator issues the command when needed | Not required to try a different map | Change the command’s ID for the next test |
+host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID |
Several maps in one public collection | High; the server loads the collection at startup | Required after changing startup parameters; recommended after major collection changes | Edit the collection, restart, and verify the loaded list |
| Collection plus map cycle | Several maps with a defined order | Highest for scheduled rotations | Required when startup or cycle configuration changes | Maintain the collection and the cycle as separate configuration layers |
Choose the direct command when speed and isolation matter. Choose a collection when the same group must survive restarts. Add a map cycle when players need a predictable sequence rather than an administrator’s manual choices.
Self-hosting versus managed CS2 hosting
The Workshop commands are the same conceptually, but the operational responsibility differs depending on where the server runs. This comparison is about maintenance and control, not a recommendation of a particular provider.
| Consideration | Self-hosted server | Managed CS2 server hosting |
|---|---|---|
| SteamCMD and updates | You install, update, and diagnose SteamCMD and the dedicated-server files. | The host commonly provides an update workflow, but you still need to confirm that the server build is current. |
| Startup parameters | Full control of launch scripts, services, and command-line options. | Control depends on whether the panel exposes custom startup parameters such as +host_workshop_collection. |
| Workshop maintenance | You manage collection visibility, IDs, restarts, logs, and fallback maps. | The host may simplify restarts and console access, while collection ownership and content decisions remain yours. |
| Geographic availability | You choose the machine and network location, subject to your own infrastructure. | You choose among the host’s available locations and capacities. |
| Troubleshooting control | You can inspect the complete server output and change every relevant setting. | You may need the host’s support team for restricted files, processes, or network issues. |
Before selecting managed hosting, verify that its control panel permits custom startup parameters and provides console or log access. A service that hides both may make a collection-based setup difficult to diagnose even if it advertises CS2 support.

1. Recheck the numeric ID
Open the Workshop page again and compare the number after ?id= with the command or startup parameter. Confirm that you copied a map ID for host_workshop_map and a collection ID for +host_workshop_collection. A valid-looking number can still identify the wrong type of object.
2. Confirm collection visibility
If you use a collection, verify that it is published publicly. A collection that only you can see is not a reliable source for a dedicated server serving other players.
3. Restart after launch changes
Changing a startup parameter while the process is running does not retroactively apply it. Stop and restart the server through the same mechanism that normally launches it, then watch the first lines of output for the collection parameter.
4. Inspect the known Workshop list
Run ds_workshop_listmaps from the server console. Use its output to distinguish between “the server never loaded the Workshop item” and “the item is loaded but the rotation selected another map.”

Keep the console visible during the first load. If the server returns to a normal map, leave it there while you correct the Workshop configuration instead of repeatedly forcing a failed map command. The fallback gives players a usable server while you diagnose the content path.
6. Compare startup syntax with Valve’s documented example
When launch syntax is suspect, compare the structure of your command line with Valve’s documented issue example that includes +host_workshop_collection and +workshop_start_map. Command availability and startup behavior can vary as CS2 updates, so treat that example as a syntax reference rather than proof that every historical option is present on your build.

7. Update before deeper diagnosis
Update the dedicated server and SteamCMD files, restart, and test again. SteamCMD is Steam’s supported distribution and update path for dedicated servers; diagnosing an old installation first can lead you to chase a problem that an update resolves.
Operational practices that prevent repeat failures
Keep an inventory of IDs
Maintain a small configuration note containing each map’s Workshop item ID, the collection ID, the date you last verified visibility, and the map-cycle entry that uses it. This avoids copying an ID from an outdated chat message when you need to recover the server.
Test changes in a controlled order
- Test a single map with
host_workshop_map MAP_ID. - Confirm the map appears in
ds_workshop_listmaps. - Add the map to the public collection.
- Restart with
+host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID. - Only then adjust the map cycle or announce the change to players.
This sequence identifies whether a failure comes from the item itself, the collection, the startup line, or the rotation.
Preserve a recovery path
Keep a normal map and a known-good map-cycle configuration available outside the Workshop setup. If a creator changes an item or a collection becomes inaccessible, you can restore a playable server without deleting the Workshop configuration you are still investigating.
Communicate download expectations
Tell players that the first connection may include an automatic Workshop download. Ask them to wait for the client to finish loading rather than repeatedly reconnecting, and test with a fresh client before a scheduled event.
