To use Starknet, install a Starknet-compatible wallet such as Argent or Braavos, create or import an account, and then use that wallet’s network selector to choose Starknet mainnet or the specific testnet required by the application. Confirm the selected network before connecting a dApp or signing anything. Adding Starknet is not the same as adding an ordinary EVM custom RPC network in MetaMask.
Your wallet may also ask you to protect a recovery phrase, fund the account, or deploy the account on-chain. Those steps vary by wallet and device. Bridging assets from Ethereum through StarkGate can provide funds, but it is optional and is separate from changing the network shown in your wallet.

What you need before adding Starknet
Have the following ready before opening a wallet installation flow:
Recommended Free Tools
- A browser or mobile device supported by the wallet you choose.
- The exact destination you intend to use: Starknet mainnet or a named testnet, such as a Sepolia environment when that is what the application specifies.
- A safe place to record the recovery phrase if the wallet generates one. Never send that phrase to support staff, a website, a dApp, or another person.
- A funding plan if the account must pay transaction fees or complete an on-chain deployment. Funding is not required merely to open a network selector.
Do not begin by copying an RPC URL from an unverified post. Starknet uses its own account and wallet ecosystem, and the ordinary EVM custom-network procedure in MetaMask is not the supported way to add it.

Choose a Starknet-compatible wallet
Starknet’s wallet-discovery materials identify Argent and Braavos as wallet options. Both can be used as starting points, but the available platforms, account features, network entries, recovery behavior, and dApp support can change. Check the wallet’s current installation page and prompts for your specific device rather than assuming that a desktop flow also applies to a phone.

This is a practical choice rather than a universal ranking. The available evidence does not establish that one wallet is best for every platform, recovery requirement, or dApp.
Why MetaMask is different
Starknet’s getting-started guide says MetaMask does not natively support Starknet as an ordinary EVM network. The same guide describes a MetaMask Snap route as an alternative. If you use that route, follow the current Starknet and MetaMask instructions for the Snap. Do not treat Starknet as a conventional custom RPC entry, and do not paste an arbitrary Starknet endpoint into MetaMask’s EVM network form.
Create or import the wallet account
The labels and order differ by wallet, but the underlying process normally has the following checkpoints. Stop if a prompt asks for your recovery phrase in a website form or chat window; legitimate wallet software should handle recovery inside its protected interface.

- Install from the wallet’s current official distribution. Check the publisher, browser-extension or mobile-store listing, and requested permissions. Avoid copies promoted through unsolicited messages or search ads.
- Choose to create a new account or import an existing one. Import only when you already control the recovery material and understand which account type the wallet supports. A newly created account receives a new recovery phrase.
- Record the recovery phrase offline. Write it down exactly in the displayed order and store it where other people and network-connected devices cannot access it. Screenshots, cloud notes, and email drafts expose the phrase to theft.
- Complete the wallet’s confirmation checks. A wallet may ask you to select words, set a password, enable a device lock, or configure another security control. These controls protect the device; they do not replace the recovery phrase.
- Note the account address and network shown. Copy an address only through the wallet’s own copy control, and check the first and last characters after pasting it into another application. An address on the wrong network can look plausible while remaining unusable for your intended transaction.
- Finish any account-creation prompt. Some Starknet wallets let you view an account immediately; others may require an on-chain deployment before the account can perform certain actions.
The wallet’s current prompts are authoritative for the exact sequence. Starknet’s general setup guidance and Braavos’s setup guide describe the concepts of creating an account, protecting the phrase, and deploying it, but their older screenshots may not match today’s interface.
Understand account deployment and funding
Deployment is an on-chain account step
Starknet accounts are smart-contract accounts rather than simple key-only addresses. Depending on the wallet and account state, the first usable transaction may involve deploying the account on-chain. A deployment prompt can therefore look different from a simple “activate” switch. Read the transaction details and the network name before approving it.
Not every wallet presents deployment in the same place, and the requirement can depend on whether the account already exists on-chain. Do not assume that an account visible in the wallet has already been deployed or that deployment costs are identical across wallets. If a fee is shown, review the token, amount, and destination in the wallet before signing.

Funding is separate from selecting a network
You may need funds to deploy an account, pay transaction fees, or interact with a dApp. A zero balance does not mean that network switching failed; it means the selected account has no spendable assets on that network. Mainnet assets and testnet assets are separate environments, and a balance on one should not be expected to appear on the other.

Switch to Starknet mainnet or a testnet
Wallet interfaces change, so the reliable procedure is to use the wallet’s network settings or network selector rather than rely on a fixed button name. The essential operation is the same on desktop and mobile:
- Open the wallet itself. Do this from the installed extension or mobile application, not from a pop-up link supplied by an unknown site.
- Open the network control. Look for the wallet’s current network name, network settings, or account-environment selector. The exact label and location depend on the wallet version and device.
- Choose the intended Starknet environment. Select Starknet mainnet for real assets and production dApps, or choose the specifically named testnet required by your testing workflow. If several testnets appear, match the dApp’s documentation exactly.
- Wait for the wallet to confirm the change. The displayed network name, account balance, and available transaction history should update. Do not sign while the old network is still displayed.
- Reconnect the dApp if necessary. A dApp that was connected under another network may need to be disconnected and connected again so it reads the new chain.
- Verify before approving. Check the network name, account address, token, amount, recipient, and requested permissions in the wallet confirmation screen.
StarkGate’s guidance emphasizes being on the correct mainnet or testnet before using the bridge. The same check applies to any Starknet dApp: a transaction can be validly signed yet still occur on an unintended environment.
Mainnet and testnet are not interchangeable
| Environment | Use it for | Asset expectation | Risk to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starknet mainnet | Production applications and assets with real economic value. | Only assets actually held on Starknet mainnet are spendable there. | Approvals and transfers are real transactions; verify every detail. |
| Starknet testnet | Development, demonstrations, and testing when the application names that testnet. | Test tokens are environment-specific and should not be treated as mainnet funds. | A dApp may reject another testnet even when the wallet shows a Starknet testnet option. |
Wallet and bridge support for a particular testnet can change. If the required network is missing, check the current application and wallet documentation rather than adding an unverified custom network.

Connect a Starknet dApp after switching
Switching the wallet does not automatically authorize every website. Connection and transaction approval are separate decisions.
- Open the dApp from a trusted address and locate its wallet-connection control.
- Select the Starknet wallet you installed. If it is not listed, confirm that the extension or mobile wallet is unlocked and that the dApp supports that wallet and device.
- Read the connection request. Confirm the account address and network displayed by both the dApp and the wallet.
- Approve only the connection you understand. A connection can allow a site to read an address and request signatures; it does not justify approving unrelated transactions.
- When signing, inspect the final wallet prompt again. A network change made in another tab can leave a dApp displaying stale information.
If the dApp asks you to switch networks, let the wallet show the proposed destination and compare it with the network you intended to use. Reject a request that names an unfamiliar environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fund Starknet through StarkGate when necessary
StarkGate is documented as a bridge for ETH and ERC-20 tokens between Ethereum and Starknet. It can be useful when your account needs assets, but opening Starknet or changing the selected network does not require a bridge transaction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Complete wallet creation and select the destination Starknet network first.
- Open the current StarkGate interface and connect a supported wallet.
- Choose the Ethereum source network and the Starknet destination network shown by the interface. For a testnet bridge, use the matching testnet on both sides; do not mix a mainnet source with a testnet destination.
- Select the token and amount, then verify the source account, destination account, and network names. The destination address should be the Starknet account you control.
- Review the bridge’s transaction and fee information in the wallet before signing. Bridging is a transfer operation, not a network-setting operation.
- Wait for the interface and wallet to show completion before assuming the balance is usable. If the account still needs deployment, follow the wallet’s deployment prompt rather than repeatedly submitting transfers.
StarkGate’s documented support covers ETH and ERC-20 movement between Ethereum and Starknet, but supported assets, routes, wallets, and interface steps can change. Confirm those details in the current bridge interface. Always verify the network and recipient before moving assets; an incorrect bridge route can strand funds.

Troubleshoot the most common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Starknet is not listed | The wallet version, device, or account mode may not expose Starknet. | Confirm that you installed a wallet that currently supports Starknet and check its current network documentation. Do not substitute an EVM custom RPC. |
| The dApp says the wrong network is selected | The wallet remained on another Starknet environment, or the dApp cached the prior connection. | Switch in the wallet, confirm the displayed network, disconnect the dApp, and reconnect. |
| The balance is zero | The account is unfunded, the asset is on another network, or the account has not completed a required deployment. | Check the network, account address, token contract information supplied by the dApp, and any deployment prompt. |
| A bridge transfer does not appear | The transfer is pending, the destination network is different, or the asset is not supported in that environment. | Review the bridge status and the exact source and destination details. Do not submit a duplicate transfer while the first is unresolved. |
| The wallet shows a different account | A different profile, imported phrase, or account index is active. | Lock the wallet, reopen the intended profile, and compare the full address. Never overwrite recovery material while troubleshooting. |
| Connection approval keeps failing | The wallet is locked, the extension is outdated, or the dApp does not support that wallet/device combination. | Unlock the wallet, reload the dApp, and consult the current compatibility notes. Avoid installing an unverified “fix.” |
| A guide’s screenshots do not match | Wallet interfaces and Starknet network menus have changed. | Use the current wallet prompts and documentation; treat older screenshots as conceptual guidance only. |
Security checks that prevent irreversible mistakes
- Protect the recovery phrase. Anyone with it can generally recreate control of the account. Wallet support should not ask you to disclose it.
- Separate testnet and mainnet habits. Use a clearly labeled test account for experiments and keep production funds out of unfamiliar applications.
- Read every signature. Confirm network, account, token, amount, recipient, and permissions. A familiar website name does not make an unexpected transaction safe.
- Use the wallet’s own address display. Clipboard malware and look-alike addresses can replace a copied destination. Compare enough characters to detect a substitution before signing.
- Keep recovery material available before changing devices. Uninstalling an extension or losing a phone does not recover an account; the recovery method does.
- Do not confuse a visible address with usable funds. Verify that the account is deployed when the wallet requires deployment and that the asset is on the selected network.
A repeatable workflow for future network changes
Once the wallet is installed, use this short pre-transaction routine each time:
- Read the dApp or bridge instructions and write down the required network.
- Open the wallet and switch to that exact mainnet or testnet.
- Confirm the account address and whether the wallet indicates deployment is complete.
- Check the balance on the selected network and fund only through a route you trust.
- Connect or reconnect the dApp.
- Inspect the wallet’s signing screen, then approve or reject deliberately.
- Afterward, verify the resulting transaction or balance in the wallet and the relevant network explorer supplied by the application.
This routine avoids the most expensive category of mistake: signing a correct-looking transaction while the wallet is pointed at the wrong environment.
Keeping the instructions current
Wallet menus, supported networks, bridge routes, and device compatibility are release-dependent. Starknet’s general getting-started material and individual wallet guides explain the setup concepts, but screenshots published several years ago may be stale. Before a high-value transaction, recheck the current wallet documentation, the dApp’s required network, and StarkGate’s live interface. If those sources disagree with an older tutorial, follow the current wallet and application prompts and stop when the network or recipient cannot be verified.
