Make the full source URL visibly readable beside every screenshot in your client report. Capture it with the browser address bar, add URL metadata with a capture tool, or put a source caption directly below the image. Then inspect the exported report—and any shared link—as the client will see it.
Choose where the source URL will appear
There are three practical options. Choose based on whether the URL must travel inside the image, whether you need a date or timestamp, and how the client will access the report.

Use a reliable client-report workflow
- Record the exact page address. Copy the URL after opening the precise page and state you are documenting. Keep the relevant path and query string if they identify the page or view; do not silently remove parts that matter to verification.
- Capture the page and its context. Either include the browser address bar in the capture or use a tool option that prints the URL. If you need to direct attention to a page element, annotate sparingly so the source and relevant content remain legible.
- Add a date or timestamp when it matters. Website content can change. Label the information accurately: a date is not necessarily a time-of-day timestamp. For example, Ad Reform describes wrappers that add a URL and timestamp to downloads and presentations; other tools may provide only a date.
- Keep the source line attached to the image. If using a caption, place it immediately below the screenshot, for example:
Source: https://example.com/page (captured 3 October 2026). Verify the address matches the page shown. - Review the exported report. Check the final PDF or document at ordinary viewing size. Make sure the URL is readable, not cropped, hidden by a share setting, or stranded on another page. Confirm annotations do not cover relevant content.
Capture the URL in the image or with a tool
Include the browser address bar
Capture the entire browser window or screen rather than only the webpage content. This makes the address bar part of the image, but it can also make the page smaller on the report page. Check legibility at the size the client will view it. Awesome Screenshot documents whole-screen or app-window capture as a way to include the website address (Awesome Screenshot Help Center, February 1, 2024).
Print URL and date metadata
Tool behavior differs. Awesome Screenshot documents a local-save option called “Add Date and URL at the top of a screenshot.” Its cloud workflow can show URL and date beneath an image, but the source URL is hidden by default in a shareable link unless viewer access is enabled. Ad Reform describes wrappers that add a site URL and timestamp to screenshot downloads and presentations. FireShot describes headers, footers, or watermarks that can include page URL, date, and time. Check the current version and settings you use rather than assuming metadata is enabled.

Use Microsoft Edge and add a caption if needed
Microsoft Edge supports full-page or area screenshots and markup before copying or saving. The documented route is the right-click menu or Ctrl+Shift+S. Its feature description does not establish that the saved image automatically prints the source URL, so retain the address bar in the capture or add a report caption.
Annotate without obscuring the evidence
Annotations help a client find the relevant button, result, or section, but the URL and page context still need to be readable. Edge supports markup before saving or copying a capture. Mozilla Support describes visual and sequential markers for clarifying screenshot instructions. Use a small number of clear markers, keep them away from the address bar and essential page text, and check the exported image for legibility.

Check sharing and portability
A URL shown on a hosted screenshot page is not necessarily embedded in the downloaded image. If you send a share link, open that exact link in a separate session or viewer and confirm the intended client can see the source URL. Awesome Screenshot specifically documents that its cloud share URL is hidden by default unless viewer access is granted. For a report that may be downloaded, forwarded, or archived, a visible caption or metadata printed on the image keeps the source associated with the screenshot more reliably.
