OpenAI currently documents website access as a limited trial for selected commercial partners, so first confirm eligibility and request a client; the example configuration in the guide is not a substitute for an issued client and registered callback URL. Your server handles the authorization-code exchange and ID-token validation, then your app creates or links its own account and issues its own session.
Can any developer add Sign in with ChatGPT to a website?
Not currently on a self-serve basis. OpenAI’s website integration guide says the integration is available to selected commercial partners through a limited trial. Confirm eligibility and obtain an OAuth client before implementing the flow. Register the exact callback URL for each environment, and confirm the token-endpoint authentication method for your client.

The Help Center describes the user experience on participating sites and notes that availability depends on app support and organizational settings, with initial partner availability rolling out. That user-side availability does not mean every developer can register a website client.
What the OAuth integration does—and does not do
Sign in with ChatGPT lets a participating site authenticate a user through OpenID Connect. It does not, by itself, grant the site access to the user’s ChatGPT conversations or OpenAI API resources. OpenAI’s quickstart distinguishes identity from additional product permissions and states: “Your application owns account creation, enterprise sign-in policy, sessions, authorization, and connector access.”

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
OpenAI says the identity flow shares the user’s name, email address, and profile picture if available. Conversations, memory, files, tokens, billing information, and other ChatGPT account data are not shared through identity sign-in alone. Any extra delegated access requires a separate permission flow.
How to add Sign in with ChatGPT using OAuth
The flow below follows OpenAI’s documented website implementation. Use a maintained OAuth/OIDC library where possible, and keep the authorization transaction and sensitive credentials on the server.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Request a client and register callback URLs. Obtain an OpenAI client ID through the partner process. Register the exact redirect URI for each environment, such as production and staging, and use the matching URI in the authorization request and token exchange. Confirm whether the registered client authenticates at the token endpoint with a server-held secret or is configured as a public client.
- Load OpenID Connect discovery metadata. Read the production configuration from https://auth.openai.com/.well-known/openid-configuration. Use its issuer, authorization endpoint, token endpoint, and JWKS URI rather than assuming sample values remain current. The website guide lists these production examples: issuer
https://auth.openai.com, authorization endpointhttps://auth.openai.com/api/accounts/authorize, token endpointhttps://auth.openai.com/api/accounts/oauth/token, and JWKS URIhttps://auth.openai.com/.well-known/jwks.json. Validate them against discovery when implementing. - Start the transaction on your backend. For each sign-in attempt, generate fresh, unpredictable
stateandnoncevalues and a PKCE verifier with its S256 challenge. Store the transaction server-side and bind it to a secure browser session. The guide’s illustrative transaction expires after ten minutes; in production, expire stored transactions and make one-time consumption atomic across app instances. - Send the browser to the authorization endpoint. Request the identity scopes
openid profile email, include the client ID and exact registered redirect URI, and send the generated state, nonce, and PKCE S256 challenge.openidrequests an ID token;profileandemailrequest the available profile and email claims. Do not request permissions for product access unless your app has a separate need and flow for them. - Process the callback on the backend. Compare the returned state with the stored transaction before proceeding. Exchange the authorization code at the discovered token endpoint using the saved PKCE verifier and the same redirect URI. Validate the ID-token signature using the discovered JWKS, and validate its claims—including the issuer, audience/client ID, expiration, and nonce—according to OpenID Connect. Require
issto match the issuer from discovery exactly. - Map the verified identity to a local user. Use the verified issuer, client ID, and subject as the external identity key for account lookup or linking. Do not rely on an unverified email claim as the sole account identifier. Apply your own account-creation, linking, enterprise sign-in, and authorization rules.
- Issue your app’s session. After the identity is verified and mapped, create a session using your site’s normal secure session design. OpenAI authenticates the user; your app remains responsible for its own session and what that user can do inside the app.
Keep secrets and tokens on the server
A confidential OAuth client must keep its client secret server-side. Do not put that secret or an OpenAI API key in browser code. OpenAI’s API authentication reference warns that API keys are secrets and must not be exposed in client-side code. Use HTTPS for the sign-in flow, protect transaction storage, and avoid logging authorization codes, tokens, or secrets.
When your app also needs OpenAI product access
Identity sign-in and permission to use ChatGPT plan benefits for eligible AI requests are separate capabilities. If your app needs the latter, implement the separate authorization and scopes described in OpenAI’s Sign in with ChatGPT quickstart. Do not treat an ID token or the identity scopes as permission to access conversations, API resources, or plan usage.
