How to Spot and Report Cryptocurrency Scams on Social Media

Pause before sending cryptocurrency: guaranteed returns, pressure to act quickly, a push into private messaging, or a demand for extra money to withdraw supposed profits are major warning signs. Even a post from a friend’s real account may be fraudulent if the account was taken over. Verify the person and the offer independently; if you have already paid, stop sending money, preserve the evidence and report it.

How to recognize a social-media crypto scam

Scammers may use posts, ads, direct messages or long conversations to draw people into fake investment offers. The person contacting you may be a stranger, a fabricated profile, or someone using a compromised account. The FTC warns that a familiar account can be taken over and used to promote quick, low-risk returns. Verify through a phone number or email address you already know belongs to the person, not details supplied in the suspicious post or message. FTC: Can you spot an investment scam on social media?

Promises of guaranteed or unusually fast returns

No investment is risk-free, and claims that a token or program will reliably double your money are not proof of an opportunity. The FTC puts it plainly: “There are no guaranteed returns — and no investments without risks.” FTC consumer guidance

Urgency and pressure to leave the platform

Limited-time offers, pressure to act now and vague explanations are reasons to stop and check, not to hurry. The CFTC also identifies a push to move from a social platform to a messaging app as a tip-off. A private conversation can isolate you from other people who might question the pitch. Relationship-building tied to investment advice

A new online contact may spend time building trust and then repeatedly suggest investments or ask for money. In some schemes, the contact steers the target to a fraudulent trading platform. Do not let an online-only acquaintance make investment decisions for you; discuss the offer with someone you trust and take time to understand its costs, fees and risks. Displayed gains followed by blocked withdrawals

A fake platform can show a balance that appears to grow while preventing withdrawals. A sudden demand for taxes or fees to release the money is another warning sign. Do not send another payment to unlock supposed profits. CFTC: Digital Asset Frauds

Hype around an obscure token or DeFi project

A coordinated social-media campaign can hype a project, increase demand and be followed by promoters selling their holdings, leaving later buyers with losses. Popularity or repeated posts are not independent verification. CFTC: Digital Asset Frauds

Requests to pay in cryptocurrency

Scammers use crypto payments because the money is generally difficult to recover. A request to pay in cryptocurrency does not establish that a person, platform or investment is legitimate. FTC: Avoiding a cryptocurrency scam

What to check before sending money

  1. Pause. Do not click a suspicious link, switch to another app or transfer funds just because someone says time is running out.
  2. Verify the person separately. Contact a friend through a phone number or email address you already use for them. Do not rely on the suspicious account or on contact details included in its message. FTC guidance
  3. Search independently. Look up the company or program name with terms such as “scam,” “fraud,” “review” or “complaint.” Check relevant regulator records where applicable. Registration can be useful to check, but it does not guarantee that an investment is safe. CFTC guidance
  4. Get a second opinion. Ask someone you trust who is not involved in the offer. Make sure you understand the costs, fees and risks before deciding. CFTC guidance
  5. Walk away from guaranteed-return claims. Do not send money on the strength of promises of certain profits or no risk. FTC guidance

What to do if you already sent money or information

Stop paying and preserve what happened

Do not send more money to the suspected criminals. Save the original post, profile name and URL, messages, emails, phone numbers, websites and apps involved, payment records and a timeline of events. Keep the details of how contact began and any identifiers used. For each crypto transfer, record the address, amount, asset type, date and time, and transaction hash if available. Submit what you have even if some details are missing. FBI: Cryptocurrency Investment Fraud CFTC: Digital Asset Frauds

The FBI advises victims not to tell suspected criminals that they have contacted the FBI, because doing so could compromise an investigation. FBI IC3 guidance for cryptocurrency scam victims

Report to U.S. authorities and the platform

  • FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3): File at ic3.gov or contact a local FBI field office. Report promptly and include as much transaction information as you can. FBI guidance
  • Federal Trade Commission (FTC): Report a social-media investment scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC also directs consumers to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s complaint form at sec.gov/tcr. FTC guidance
  • Social-media platform: Use its in-app reporting controls to report the account, post or ad. Platform procedures can change, so use the current controls in the service where you saw the content.

These are U.S. reporting routes. If you are elsewhere, contact your national cybercrime or consumer-protection authority and report the account or content to the platform.

Watch out for recovery scams

After a loss, someone may claim they can retrieve the cryptocurrency for a fee or pose as law enforcement, a business or a law firm. Do not pay for a promised recovery. The FBI warns: “Be wary of anyone claiming they can recover your funds, as this may be another scam.” FBI: Cryptocurrency Investment Fraud

How widespread are social-media investment losses?

The FTC reported that nearly 30% of people who reported scam losses said the scam started on social media in 2025, with reported social-media scam losses reaching $2.1 billion. The FTC also reported $1.1 billion in losses to investment scams originating on social media that year. These are reported losses, not a count of every incident or all actual losses. FTC, April 2026

The CFTC cited nearly $4 billion in reported losses to relationship investment scams in 2023. That figure covers the broader relationship-investment scam category; it is not a cryptocurrency-only total. CFTC, February 10, 2025

What reporting can and cannot do

Reports can provide information useful to investigations, but filing one does not guarantee that an individual case will be pursued or that money will be recovered. Preserve your records and submit accurate details even when you do not have every transaction identifier. FBI IC3 guidance
