To make podcast sections appear as chapters on a YouTube Live replay, add timestamped chapter titles to the replay video’s description in YouTube Studio. A podcast playlist organizes episodes; it does not create chapters on an individual replay. For manual chapters, start at 00:00, use at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long.
Podcast episodes and replay chapters are separate
YouTube treats a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. Chapter markers, by contrast, are time-coded sections on one video. Adding a replay to a podcast playlist organizes it with the show; it does not add chapter markers to the replay.
The workflow is therefore: make sure the livestream replay exists, add chapter timestamps to that video’s description, then add the video to the podcast playlist if it belongs there.
Add chapters to the saved livestream replay
- Confirm the replay exists. In YouTube Studio, look for the completed stream in the Live area. If no archived replay was created, there is no video on which to add chapters. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local recording as a backup, and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
- Open the replay’s video details. Select the completed stream and edit its description. YouTube’s documented manual-chapter workflow uses the video description for the timestamp-and-title list. See YouTube’s Video Chapters guidance.
- Enter the chapter timestamps and titles. Start with
00:00, then add at least two more timestamps in ascending order. Give each chapter a descriptive title and ensure every chapter is at least 10 seconds long. For example:00:00 Introduction 04:18 Topic one 17:42 Listener questionsThese times are illustrative only. Replace them with the actual points in your replay. The first chapter runs from its timestamp to the next; the final chapter runs from its timestamp to the end of the video.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Save the description and check the replay’s watch page. Manual chapters take precedence over automatic chapters. YouTube’s guidance does not promise a specific display time, so do not assume the markers will appear instantly.
- Add the replay to the podcast playlist separately, if appropriate. YouTube describes podcast episodes as videos in a podcast playlist. Use the playlist to group the full-length episode; chapter controls remain on the individual replay video. YouTube also notes that some playlists may not be eligible for podcast features, including certain playlists with content the creator does not own. See YouTube’s podcast setup guidance.
Choose manual or automatic chapters
| Method | How it works | Limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual timestamps | You choose chapter boundaries and titles in the replay video’s description. | Must start at 00:00, include at least three ascending timestamps, and give each chapter at least 10 seconds. Manual chapters override automatic chapters. |
Use when you want chapters to follow the podcast rundown precisely. |
| Automatic chapters | YouTube may generate chapter divisions for the video. | Automatic chapters must be allowed in the video’s settings. Eligibility and generation are not guaranteed, even when the option is enabled. | Use when generated divisions are acceptable and exact segment boundaries are not essential. |
YouTube says automatic chapters are allowed by default for new uploads, but check the replay’s advanced settings rather than assuming the option is enabled or that chapters will be generated. If you need specific episode sections, manual timestamps give you control.
Why chapters may not appear
- No replay in Studio: Check the Live area for an archive. If a stream was longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not have been captured; keep a local recording backup for future streams.
- Timestamps are present but chapters are missing: Confirm the list begins at
00:00, contains at least three timestamps in ascending order, and leaves at least 10 seconds for every chapter. Correct the description and save it again. - You expected automatic chapters: Check that automatic chapters are allowed for the replay. YouTube does not guarantee eligibility or generation for every video.
- The episode is missing from the podcast surface: Check that the replay is actually in the podcast playlist and that the playlist contains full-length episodes. Playlist eligibility can also depend on whether the creator owns the content.
- The replay is processing or Studio looks different: The official guidance does not set a processing wait time or describe a live-replay-specific exception to chapter rules. Recheck the saved video details and YouTube’s current guidance; do not rely on a fixed waiting period.
