You can send a continuous prerecorded feed from Ubuntu to YouTube using an encoder such as OBS: install OBS, add a looping media source, then connect it to a YouTube Live stream with the stream URL and key. The important caveat is that OBS looping a file does not by itself make a broadcast failure-proof. A nonstop stream also depends on the encoder process, server, network, source media and YouTube ingest staying healthy—and the standard OBS route is GUI-oriented, not a verified headless-server recipe.
Check YouTube eligibility and decide what “nonstop” means
Before setting up Ubuntu, confirm that the channel can livestream. YouTube’s stated prerequisites are a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. Check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before planning a launch.
Also decide whether you need one continuous 24/7 broadcast or a series of shorter events. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one 24/7 session will produce a complete, usable archive; test the intended duration and archive workflow separately.
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. Putting a recording on a live encoder does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. Copyright concerns apply to music and other material in the loop as well as to the video itself. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.

Choose an Ubuntu setup that fits the job
OBS on a desktop-enabled Ubuntu system
OBS is the documented, GUI-oriented path for Linux. Its Media Source can play local video and audio files and has a Loop option. This is a suitable starting point when you want to compose scenes or loop prerecorded material and can work with OBS’s graphical interface.
The OBS Project’s current download instructions support Ubuntu 24.04 and newer through its PPA. On a supported Ubuntu installation, install it with:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studiosudo apt updatesudo apt install obs-studio
Confirm the current OBS download page before installation if you are on a different Ubuntu release, because supported distributions can change. These commands install OBS; they do not configure it as a reliable headless daemon.

Headless server or virtual host
If your Ubuntu server has no desktop session, do not assume that the ordinary OBS desktop application is a robust background service. The available official guidance establishes OBS installation and media looping, but not a tested headless OBS configuration, a systemd unit, or guaranteed reconnect behavior. A command-line encoder or a supervised process may suit a headless deployment, but select and validate a specific recipe before relying on it; this guide does not provide an unverified command sequence.
Whether the machine is on-site or hosted elsewhere, check sustained outbound bandwidth, traffic limits, encoder hardware support, power and network resilience, and whether you can monitor and access the host during an outage. An Ethernet connection is a sensible way to connect a local server to the router, but it cannot guarantee internet uptime.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live event and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Use the current values from Live Control Room rather than guessing an ingest address.
- Enter them in the encoder’s stream settings. Prefer the RTMPS server URL when YouTube provides it. RTMPS is RTMP protected with TLS/SSL; choosing it encrypts the connection to YouTube’s ingest service.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in a shared configuration. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
YouTube’s first-launch guidance recommends configuring an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled start. Use that lead time to check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before relying on the broadcast.

Set the encoder profile and check upload capacity
Match the encoder to the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to send. YouTube’s guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS where supported.
Bitrate depends on the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. For a concrete H.264 starting point, YouTube lists these recommendations:
| H.264 profile | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
Those figures are for the listed H.264 profiles; do not apply them automatically to a different resolution, frame rate or codec. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the exact profile you select.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Your measured upload capacity must exceed the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth in reserve. For example, a 10 Mbps stream needs at least 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity to leave 20% spare (10 Mbps is 80% of 12.5 Mbps). Measure from the server’s actual network location and repeat under representative network load. A shared connection may have less capacity available to the stream, and an interruption can break it.
Loop a prerecorded video in OBS
- Open OBS and create or select the scene for the broadcast. Add the visual and audio inputs the scene needs.
- Add a Media Source. Select the local video or audio file you want to play. Confirm that the file is present and readable on the Ubuntu machine; a source on another computer will not be available unless it is accessible to the server.
- Enable the source’s Loop option. OBS’s Linux Media Source supports replaying supported local media after playback completes. Check that the source continues rather than ending after one pass.
- Check the scene and audio before connecting. Confirm that the picture is framed as intended, audio is present at an appropriate level, and any other sources needed for the stream remain active.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube event. Enter the event’s stream URL and key, apply the profile settings, and start sending the feed.
- Verify the YouTube preview and stream health. For a scheduled launch, leave the recommended lead time to catch a black screen, missing audio, rejected settings or network instability before the event begins.
A loop only repeats the selected media while the encoder and its inputs keep working. It does not restart an exited encoder, restore a failed network connection, or guarantee that YouTube will keep receiving the feed. If the content is a generated scene or static visual rather than a file, make sure the input continues producing valid audio and video instead of ending or going blank.

A process that remains open is not the same as a guaranteed continuous service. Power loss, an OS problem, an encoder exit, an unavailable source file, a router or ISP outage, and an interruption at YouTube ingest can all stop the broadcast. Monitoring, a tested restart policy and a recovery plan are sound operational precautions, but their exact setup depends on the encoder and host; no specific service-manager recipe or uptime guarantee is established here.

Before treating the setup as unattended, test the complete chain for a representative period. Confirm that the selected media loops, YouTube receives the intended quality, the network has reserve capacity, and you can detect and recover from a stopped feed. Test archive needs separately: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a promise of a complete recording for a 24/7 session.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that OBS is sending to the current event’s URL and key, that the key has not been reset, and that the server can reach the network. If the key was exposed, reset it and replace it in OBS.
- The stream is unstable or drops: Compare the encoder bitrate with upload capacity measured at the host. Reduce the profile bitrate or resolution if needed, and preserve the recommended 20% bandwidth reserve. Check whether other traffic shares the connection.
- The broadcast ends when the video finishes: Confirm that Loop is enabled on the Media Source and that OBS is still running. Looping media does not recover an encoder that has exited.
- The preview is black or has no sound: Check the selected scene, media-file availability, source playback, and audio input or routing. Verify the result in YouTube’s preview before treating the stream as live.
- The event starts late or settings are rejected: Start the encoder early enough to inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Recheck the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations for that profile.
- You need a full recording of a long broadcast: Do not rely on the under-12-hour automatic-archive statement for one 24/7 event. Validate the archive behavior you need with a shorter test and arrange a separate recording workflow if necessary.
