In desktop Word, select Insert > Page Number, then choose where the number should appear and pick a style. For common variations—such as leaving a title page unnumbered, starting the next page at 1, or restarting numbers in a later section—use the steps below. Microsoft lists these instructions for Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016; ribbon labels can vary by edition and operating system.
Add page numbers throughout a document
- On the Insert tab, select Page Number.
- Choose a location, such as the top or bottom of the page, and select a style. Word inserts the number in the header or footer.
- Select Close Header and Footer, or press Esc. To change the numbering later, double-click the header or footer area. Microsoft’s page-numbering instructions cover desktop Word.
Leave the first page unnumbered
Double-click the header or footer to open it, then select Different First Page. This hides the number on the first page of that section. If a number remains in the first-page header or footer, select it and delete it. This setting can affect the first page of a section, not only the document’s opening page. See Microsoft’s instructions for hiding the first-page number.

Make the second page display page 1
Hiding the first-page number does not renumber the document: the second page may still display 2. To make it display 1, open the header or footer and choose Page Number > Format Page Numbers. In Start at, enter 0. With the first page hidden, the next page displays 1. Microsoft documents this option in its page-numbering guidance.

Use a section break when a later part of the document needs its own numbering sequence or format. A page break alone does not create a separate section for this purpose.

- Turn off Link to Previous for that header or footer. Header and footer links are separate, so unlink the one containing the number.
- Select Page Number > Format Page Numbers. Choose a numbering style—such as i, ii, iii—or enter the desired number in Start at.
If you need to check where sections begin, select Home > Show/Hide (¶) to reveal formatting marks and section breaks. Microsoft explains the section-break workflow and page-number formatting.
Add page numbers in Word for the web
In Word for the web, select Insert > Page Numbers, then choose a layout. Select Include Page Count for a format such as “Page 3 of 10.” For a first-page variation, Microsoft points to Insert > Header & Footer. Its instructions direct users to open the document in desktop Word for section-specific numbering. See Microsoft’s Word for the web page-number instructions.

Adjust the number’s appearance or position
Page-number layouts can include page-count formats such as “Page X of Y.” To change a number’s font, open the header or footer, select the number, and use the Home tab. Microsoft’s layout instructions also describe adjusting position with Tab in some workflows, or inserting a Page field through Header & Footer > Field. Available controls and labels can differ across Word versions. See Microsoft’s header and footer guidance.
