Enable oxygen in the world configuration, then restart the server. In config/Saves/World/Sandbox_config.sbc, set <EnableOxygen>true</EnableOxygen>. If players must breathe inside sealed rooms, also set <EnableOxygenPressurization>true</EnableOxygenPressurization>. After the restart, supply oxygen in-game with Ice, a powered O2/H2 Generator, conveyors and an oxygen destination such as an Air Vent, Oxygen Tank, cockpit or medical room.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What you must change on the server
Space Engineers oxygen has two separate layers. The server-world settings determine whether oxygen matters at all and whether the game calculates airtight rooms. In-game blocks then generate, move, store and consume the gas. Changing only a vent or generator cannot override a world setting that disables oxygen.

EnableOxygen: the survival oxygen rule
Set <EnableOxygen>true</EnableOxygen> to make oxygen an active survival requirement. With oxygen enabled, players can suffocate in environments without a usable oxygen source. Set it to false when you want oxygen mechanics disabled; players then do not need oxygen to survive in vacuum.
EnableOxygenPressurization: the sealed-room calculation
Set <EnableOxygenPressurization>true</EnableOxygenPressurization> when habitats, bases or rooms must be filled with breathable air. This enables the airtight-room calculation used by Air Vents. If it is false, players can still obtain oxygen from bottles, medical rooms or cockpits, but open spaces cannot be pressurized as rooms.

Enable oxygen in the world file
The exact file edit is short, but the file belongs to a specific saved world. Editing a different save or a template file will not change the world your players load.
- Stop or otherwise take the server offline for the edit. Make a backup copy of the save before changing XML. A backup gives you a recovery point if the wrong world is edited or a tag is accidentally damaged.
- Open the save directory. The documented path is
config/Saves/World/Sandbox_config.sbc. ReplaceWorldwith the directory name used by your saved world if it differs. - Open
Sandbox_config.sbcas text. Preserve the XML structure and edit the existing setting rather than creating a second copy of the same tag. - Enable the oxygen rule. Set the value exactly to
true:<EnableOxygen>true</EnableOxygen>. - Enable room pressurization if required. For sealed bases, add or change
<EnableOxygenPressurization>true</EnableOxygenPressurization>. - Save the file and restart the server. The restart is the point at which the world loads the changed configuration; simply saving the file while the server is running does not apply it to the current session.
- Load the affected world and test a known oxygen setup. Use a powered generator with Ice and a small test room or another oxygen consumer before asking players to troubleshoot their own builds.
If you operate through a managed control panel, the same logic applies: use its file manager or configuration editor to reach the save’s Sandbox_config.sbc, save the change, and use the panel’s restart control. Panel labels and directory presentation vary, so identify the actual save world before editing.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Build the minimum oxygen supply chain
The functional chain is Ice → powered O2/H2 Generator → conveyor access → Oxygen Tank or consumer → Air Vent, room or personal oxygen device. Each link has a different job. Ice is the input, the generator processes it, conveyors provide the route, tanks buffer gas, and consumers request or use it.
1. Finish and power an O2/H2 Generator
Place an O2/H2 Generator and complete construction. It must have power before it can process Ice. An unfinished or unpowered generator can appear to have the right connections while producing no oxygen.
2. Provide Ice
Put Ice in the generator’s inventory. Alternatively, connect the generator to a conveyor network that can deliver Ice from another inventory. An empty inventory means there is no feedstock to process, even when every oxygen block is connected correctly.

3. Connect the gas route
Use conveyors to connect the generator to an Oxygen Tank, Air Vent, cockpit, medical room or bottle path. Check that the blocks are actually connected to the same conveyor system; being adjacent is not enough if their conveyor ports do not meet.

4. Give the gas somewhere to go
A generator needs an oxygen destination that can request or accept gas. That destination may be a tank used as a buffer, a vent filling a room, or a block that supplies a player’s oxygen. A generator that has power and Ice but no valid destination can remain apparently idle because the network has nowhere to send the product.
Pressurize a breathable room
Room pressurization requires all three conditions: oxygen pressurization must be enabled in the world, the room must be genuinely airtight, and a powered Air Vent must have oxygen available through its conveyor network.
Prepare the enclosure
Build the room from completed blocks and close every opening. Doors, windows, corners and damaged or missing blocks can create leaks. A room that looks enclosed from one angle may still have a boundary gap that prevents the airtightness check from succeeding.
Install and configure the vent
- Place an Air Vent inside the room.
- Connect it to the oxygen network through conveyors.
- Supply the network with a powered O2/H2 Generator and Ice, or with an Oxygen Tank that can output gas.
- Power the vent and make sure it is enabled.
- Set the vent to Pressurize.
- Keep the source available while the room fills; a vent cannot continue pressurizing after its oxygen supply is exhausted.
Allow time for the room to fill. A green vent indicates that it is pressurizing, not that the room has already reached its final state. If the room never reaches a breathable condition, use the indicator-color checks below instead of repeatedly rebuilding the generator.

Use Oxygen Tanks correctly
An Oxygen Tank is a buffer between production and demand. It lets a generator store oxygen so a vent or other consumer can draw from a reserve rather than relying on production at the exact moment of use.
Stockpile mode changes the direction of flow
When an Oxygen Tank is in Stockpile mode, it accepts gas for storage but does not output gas to requesters. That setting is useful while filling a reserve, but it prevents the tank from feeding an Air Vent. Turn Stockpile off when the tank must supply the vent or another consumer.
Direct generator-to-vent versus buffered supply
| Arrangement | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Generator directly to vent | The vent receives gas while the powered generator has Ice and can process it. | Power, Ice, conveyor route and a vent that is enabled and requesting gas. |
| Generator to tank to vent | The generator fills a reserve; the vent draws from the tank when output is allowed. | Tank capacity, conveyor continuity and Stockpile mode turned off during supply. |
Use the direct arrangement for a small test or a simple installation. Add a tank when you want stored oxygen available between production cycles or when several consumers share one generator. The tank does not create oxygen; it only stores and releases gas according to its mode and available capacity.
Read Air Vent indicators before changing blocks
The vent’s color gives a short diagnostic path. Check power, settings, room boundaries and storage direction in the order that matches the displayed state.
Red: disabled, unpowered or otherwise unable to operate
- Confirm the Air Vent is enabled.
- Confirm it has power.
- Verify its conveyor connection reaches an oxygen source.
A red vent is not evidence that the room is airtight; it indicates that the vent is not currently operating as required.

Yellow: inspect airtightness and oxygen access
Check every room boundary for an open door, missing block, damaged block, unsealed window or troublesome corner. Then confirm that the vent can reach oxygen through conveyors. A sealed-looking room with no available oxygen source can remain unable to pressurize, just like a supplied room with a hidden opening.
Green: the room is pressurizing
Green means the vent is actively pressurizing. Keep the generator or tank supplied and allow the process time to complete. Do not switch the tank to Stockpile while the vent needs to draw from it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Blue: the room is depressurizing
Blue indicates depressurization. If the system is moving oxygen into connected storage during this process, make sure that storage has enough capacity. A full destination cannot accept additional gas.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Diagnose an empty generator or tank
When a generator or tank remains empty, follow the gas path from left to right rather than replacing blocks at random.
- Check power. Verify that the O2/H2 Generator and the intended consumer or tank are powered.
- Check Ice. Confirm that Ice is in the generator inventory or can reach it through conveyors.
- Check conveyor continuity. Inspect every connection between the generator, tank, vent and other destination. One disconnected segment breaks the route.
- Check for a requesting destination. A network needs an Air Vent, tank or other oxygen consumer that can accept gas.
- Check tank mode. Stockpile allows intake but blocks output. Turn it off when the tank must feed a vent.
- Check available capacity. During depressurization, connected storage must have room for the gas being moved.
- Check the world settings. If oxygen or pressurization is disabled, block-level troubleshooting cannot produce the behavior you expect.
- Restart after configuration edits. Re-test only after the server has loaded the saved world configuration.
Choose the oxygen ruleset for your server
There is no single correct setting. Choose based on whether you want oxygen to be a survival requirement and whether sealed architecture is part of the game.
Best Value
Oxygen completely disabled
Set EnableOxygen to false when the server should remove oxygen pressure from gameplay. Players do not suffocate in vacuum, so generators, tanks and vents are not required for survival.
Personal oxygen without pressurized rooms
Set EnableOxygen to true and EnableOxygenPressurization to false when players should manage oxygen through bottles, medical rooms or cockpits but the server should not calculate airtight habitats.
Full oxygen and habitat simulation
Set both values to true when players must manage oxygen and build breathable sealed rooms. This is the setting combination required for Air Vent pressurization.
Self-hosted files and managed panels
| Administration method | Where the change happens | Required follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted server | Edit the saved world’s config/Saves/World/Sandbox_config.sbc directly. |
Save the XML and restart the server before testing. |
| Managed hosting panel | Use the panel’s file manager or configuration editor to reach the same save-world file. | Save, then use the panel restart control; confirm that the selected world is the one players load. |
The administration method changes how you reach the file, not what the settings mean. If a panel regenerates configuration files, check that the edit was made in the active save and that the restart completed before diagnosing in-game blocks.
Performance considerations
Calculating airtightness for large and complex grids can be one of the more CPU-intensive operations a server performs. The statement is qualitative rather than a benchmark for a particular machine, world or player count; no universal oxygen-throughput or CPU-cost number applies to every setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEnabling pressurization therefore has a different operational cost from enabling oxygen alone. Oxygen without pressurizable rooms still requires players to obtain oxygen, while pressurization adds room-boundary calculations. If a large build causes performance concerns, first determine whether the server needs sealed-room gameplay or only personal oxygen sources. Do not assume that changing Ice quantity, tank size or generator count will fix airtightness calculations; those blocks affect supply, not the room-boundary check.
Operational checklist
- World:
EnableOxygenistruefor oxygen survival. - Rooms:
EnableOxygenPressurizationistruefor breathable sealed spaces. - File: The active world’s
config/Saves/World/Sandbox_config.sbccontains the changes. - Restart: The server was restarted after saving the file.
- Generator: It is complete, powered and supplied with Ice.
- Conveyors: The generator reaches the tank, vent or other consumer.
- Vent: It is powered, enabled and set to Pressurize for a habitat.
- Tank: It has capacity and is not in Stockpile mode when it must output gas.
- Room: Doors, windows, corners and blocks form a genuinely airtight boundary.
- Indicator: The vent color is interpreted before replacing equipment.
Bottom line
To add oxygen, enable EnableOxygen in the saved world’s Sandbox_config.sbc and restart the server. For pressurized rooms, enable EnableOxygenPressurization as well. In-game, provide Ice to a powered O2/H2 Generator, connect the conveyor network to a destination, and keep an Oxygen Tank out of Stockpile mode whenever it must feed an Air Vent. The vent’s red, yellow, green and blue states then point you toward power, airtightness, active pressurization or storage-capacity faults.
