Add overlays in your streaming software—not in YouTube Live Control Room. In OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop, select the scene you’ll stream, add an Image source for a graphic, Text for a label, or Browser source for a live widget, then position it in the preview and check the full layout before going live.
Choose the right overlay source
An overlay can be a fixed graphic, simple wording, or a web-based element that updates during a stream. The source type depends on what you want to show:

| Overlay | Source to use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Frame, logo, or corner graphic | Image | Choose an image file on your device. A local image is sufficient for a static graphic. |
| Short label or other simple wording | Text | Keep it readable at the size it will appear in the finished stream. |
| Chat, alerts, or another live web widget | Browser | Use the widget URL and setup instructions from its provider. OBS says third-party chat and alert overlays are embedded using a Browser Source; OBS does not itself provide those services. OBS Sources Guide, OBS FAQ. |
| Streamlabs theme or overlay collection | Streamlabs Desktop, or an OBS plugin or imported scene collection | Streamlabs documents each of these routes. Plugin compatibility depends on its current requirements. |
Add an overlay in OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop
- Choose the scene. Open OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop and select the scene that should display the overlay. You can use separate scenes for a starting screen, main live layout, or break screen.
- Add a source. In the Sources area, select the plus or add control, then choose Image, Text, or Browser according to the overlay. OBS scenes combine sources such as images, text, and browser pages; Streamlabs’ guide also describes adding image files to a scene’s Sources. OBS Sources Guide; Streamlabs overlay guide.
- Set the source content. For an image, browse to the graphic file. For Text, enter the wording. For a web widget, follow its provider’s current instructions and enter the supplied URL in the Browser source.
- Place and size it. Move and resize the source in the scene preview. Keep key video content unobstructed and check that text is legible at the final output size.
- Preview the complete scene. Check the composition before going live, including the position of graphics and whether the widget or web page appears as expected.
- Repeat for other scenes as needed. If the overlay should appear in multiple scenes, add it to each scene or use the software’s documented source or scene reuse controls. The precise reuse controls can vary by software version.
Use a Streamlabs overlay in OBS Studio
Streamlabs documents two ways to bring its overlays into OBS: the Streamlabs plugin or importing a scene collection. Its guide describes the plugin as the easiest route and the scene collection as the no-plugin alternative. Follow Streamlabs’ current instructions for the method you choose: How to Add an Overlay to Your Stream.
Check plugin compatibility first
Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide, published May 20, 2026, lists Windows and OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later as requirements for its plugin. It also notes that some changes, such as adding an overlay, may require restarting OBS. Requirements and interface labels can change, so confirm the current details in the Streamlabs plugin quick-start guide before installing.

Import a scene collection instead
If you do not want to use the plugin, Streamlabs documents importing its scene collection into OBS as an alternative. Use the current instructions in Streamlabs’ overlay guide, then check the imported scenes and sources in OBS before streaming.
What to know about chat and alerts
A static image and a live widget behave differently: an image is a local graphic, while a widget usually depends on a web page and its provider. OBS’s guidance for chat and alerts is to use a third-party overlay through a Browser source; it does not directly supply stream chat display or alert services. See OBS’s guidance for chat and alerts, and consult the widget provider for its URL and setup steps.

If a browser overlay is blank or an image is missing, the available instructions do not establish one universal fix. Check that the source type and content are correct, confirm the widget URL or image file, and follow the support guidance for your specific software version and provider rather than assuming a generic cache, size, or permission change will solve it.

Or let it run in the cloud
Overlays are for the live composition you send from OBS or Streamlabs. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
