In Streamlabs Desktop, the quickest way to add an overlay is to install a theme from the Streamlabs Overlay Library or the app’s overlay search. If you already have an .overlay file, import it through Settings → Scene Collections → Import Overlay File. You can also build a layout from image files using each scene’s Sources + control.
Choose the right overlay route
Start with what you have: a ready-made theme in Streamlabs’ library, an existing .overlay file, or separate image assets. Widgets such as alerts are related to overlays, but are configured separately and may need to be added as integrated sources or browser sources.

Install a theme from the Streamlabs Overlay Library
- Open streamlabs.com/library, or use the overlay search inside Streamlabs Desktop.
- Browse featured or trending options, or use Advanced Search with keywords and filters such as color and type.
- Open a theme you want and choose Select and Install. Select the components you want to use.
- When prompted, open Streamlabs Desktop, review the components, and install them. The overlay should then be available in the scene collection.
Not every theme is available on the same terms: some are marked Ultra-only and may take non-subscribers to checkout. Check the specific theme’s access details before choosing it; library contents and subscription access can change. Import an existing .overlay file
- In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings.
- Choose Scene Collections.
- Select Import Overlay File and choose the
.overlayfile. - Wait for the import to finish, then inspect the imported scenes and adjust their positioning or settings as needed.
Use this route when the overlay is already packaged as a Streamlabs .overlay file; separate image assets are added manually instead.

Build an overlay from image files
- Create a fresh scene collection in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Add the scenes you need, such as Starting Soon, Live, or BRB.
- In each scene, select Sources + and add the relevant overlay image files.
- Check the scene composition and positioning, then repeat for the other scenes.
This is the flexible option when you have standalone graphics rather than a packaged theme. The exact layout and source arrangement depend on the files and design you are using.
Use Streamlabs overlays in OBS Studio
Streamlabs documents two options for OBS Studio: install its OBS plugin and use the plugin’s Streamlabs → Overlay controls to find and install a theme, or transfer a Streamlabs scene collection without the plugin. For the plugin route, follow the current instructions in Streamlabs’ overlay guide. For scene-collection transfer, use Streamlabs’ dedicated guide to importing scenes from Streamlabs Desktop to OBS rather than relying on menu steps that may vary by version.

Add alerts and other widgets
A widget theme is a profile of alert and widget settings; it is not the same thing as a set of decorative image graphics. You can create a widget theme or customize an individual widget in the Streamlabs dashboard, then apply the widget as a source in Streamlabs Desktop. For software that is not integrated with Streamlabs, add the widget as a browser source using its widget URL.

When the overlay does not appear as expected
- You cannot install a theme: Check the theme listing for Ultra-only access; some themes require a paid subscription.
- The import option is not being used for your asset: The documented import route is for an existing
.overlayfile. Add separate images through Sources + instead. - The wrong alerts or widget settings appear: Confirm the widget theme associated with the active scene collection, or verify that the intended browser-source widget URL was added.
- The theme is not visible after installation: Return to the scene collection and check whether the installation completed and which components were selected.
- You are configuring OBS rather than Streamlabs Desktop: Choose either the Streamlabs OBS plugin route or the documented scene-collection transfer route; the Desktop menu path for importing an overlay file should not be assumed to be an OBS menu path.
