How to Add or Remove Programs on Windows 10 and 11

Use Microsoft Store to install apps when available, then remove unwanted software from Start or Settings. Control Panel is the fallback for some desktop programs.

To install an app, use Microsoft Store when it offers the app; for removal, try the Start menu or Windows Settings first. If Settings has no uninstall option, use Control Panel for a traditional desktop program. The exact Settings labels differ: Windows 11 uses Installed apps, while Windows 10 uses Apps & features.

How to install an app on Windows

Install from Microsoft Store

Microsoft recommends getting apps from Microsoft Store. Find the app in the Store and use its install option. You can also control which sources Windows allows or warns about:

  • Windows 11: Open Start > Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings, then choose the setting under “Choose where to get apps.” Depending on the selection, Windows can restrict installs to Microsoft Store or show a warning or recommendation for apps from elsewhere.
  • Windows 10: Check the corresponding app-source controls in Settings > Apps > Apps & features.

Settings and available choices can vary on devices managed by an organization. Microsoft’s instructions for changing app recommendation settings describe the controls.

Install a program from its publisher

If the app is not in Microsoft Store, use the publisher’s official download and follow its installer instructions only when Windows settings and any device policies allow it. An installer from outside the Store is not automatically safe: confirm that it comes from the software publisher you intend to use.

Check S mode before installing

Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices in S mode allow apps from Microsoft Store only. Switching out of S mode allows other installation sources, but Microsoft says the change is permanent: “Switching out of S mode is one-way.” Review Microsoft’s S mode FAQ before deciding.

Choose a removal method

Route Best for Where to go
Start menu Quick removal when the app appears in the app list Start > All apps, then right-click or press and hold the app and choose Uninstall.
Settings The usual app-management route Windows 11: Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Windows 10: Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
Control Panel A traditional desktop program that Settings cannot uninstall Search for Control Panel, open Programs > Programs and Features, select the program, then choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.

Uninstall from Start or Settings

Use the Start menu

  1. Open Start, then select All apps.
  2. Find the app, right-click it (or press and hold it on a touch screen), and choose Uninstall.
  3. Follow any prompts shown by Windows or the app’s uninstaller.

Use Settings in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the app and select its More menu.
  3. Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.

Use Settings in Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select the app and choose Uninstall.
  3. Follow the prompts to finish.

Microsoft notes that some apps are built into Windows and cannot be uninstalled. The option may also be unavailable for an app that Windows does not let you remove. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 and 11 uninstall instructions.

Use Control Panel if Settings has no uninstall option

Control Panel is a useful fallback for some desktop programs, particularly when they do not expose an uninstall option in Settings.

  1. Search Windows for Control Panel and open it.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the program, then choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
  4. Complete the program’s uninstall prompts.

Repair an app or troubleshoot a failed uninstall

Try Repair or Reset for a supported app

For apps that provide these controls, start with Repair. Reset is a further option if Repair is unavailable or does not resolve the issue; resetting may remove the app’s local data or settings.

  • Windows 11: Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s More menu, then Advanced options. Choose Repair; if needed, choose Reset.
  • Windows 10: Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the app, and open Advanced options if shown. Use Repair or Reset when available.

Not all programs provide Repair or Reset. Microsoft’s repair and reset guidance covers supported cases.

If installation or removal still fails

Restart Windows, then retry the appropriate repair, reset, or uninstall route. For a Windows 10 desktop program that cannot be installed, removed, or updated, Microsoft provides the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. It addresses particular cases involving corrupted registry keys or incomplete uninstall data; it is not a general cleanup tool. For Microsoft Store app problems, follow Microsoft Store app troubleshooting rather than the desktop-program troubleshooter.
