To add OptiFine to a CurseForge modpack, enable custom content for the profile, download the OptiFine build that matches both Minecraft and the profile’s modloader, then copy its .jar file into the profile’s mods folder. There is no command to run and no OptiFine installer inside CurseForge.
The procedure below is primarily for a Forge profile. A Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt profile cannot automatically use a standard OptiFine file just because the Minecraft version matches.

Before you start: check the modpack version and loader
OptiFine must match more than the Minecraft number. Check these two details in CurseForge:

- Open My Modpacks, then select the modpack.
- Look beside the controller icon for the Minecraft version, such as

CurseForge supports Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla profiles. OptiFine’s official download page identifies Forge compatibility for each release, so do not select a file using only the Minecraft version. For example, two OptiFine builds for Minecraft 1.20.1 can list different Forge requirements: U I6 lists Forge 47.2.18, while U I5 lists Forge 47.0.35.

How to add OptiFine to a CurseForge modpack
1. Enable custom content for the profile
CurseForge normally protects modpack contents from manual changes. Enable the profile setting before opening its folder:
- Go to My Modpacks.
- Select the modpack you want to modify.
- Open the profile’s three-dots context menu.
- Choose Profile Options.
- Check Allow content management for this profile.
- Click Done.
The Add More Content button should now be available. You do not need to use that button for OptiFine; the official file is downloaded from OptiFine’s website and installed manually.

CurseForge also warns that disabling the setting or updating the pack can overwrite manual changes. If you want to preserve the original pack, duplicate the profile first or update into a new profile when that option is available.
2. Download the compatible OptiFine file
- Open optifine.net/downloads.
- Locate the exact Minecraft version used by the CurseForge profile.
- Choose a release whose listed Forge compatibility matches the profile.
- Click Download or (Mirror).
- Save the OptiFine
.jarfile somewhere easy to find, such as your Downloads folder.
Do not open the downloaded file as a standalone installer. For this CurseForge setup, the required operation is to place the jar in the profile’s mods directory.
3. Open the modpack’s instance folder
In CurseForge, open the modpack’s page and use its folder-opening option, usually labeled Open Folder or available from the profile’s menu. This is safer than guessing the folder because every modpack has its own instance directory.

Inside that profile folder, find or create a folder named:
mods
Copy the downloaded OptiFine file into that folder. The final location should look similar to:
[CurseForge modpack instance]
└── mods
└── OptiFine_1.20.1_HD_U_I6.jar
Keep the file as a .jar. Do not extract it, rename it to .zip, or place it in the main CurseForge folder instead of the selected profile’s mods folder.
4. Launch the profile
- Close the folder window.
- Return to the modpack in CurseForge.
- Click Play.
- After Minecraft loads, open Options and check whether OptiFine-specific settings, such as shaders or expanded video settings, are present.
The presence of the jar in the folder does not guarantee a successful launch. The profile’s Minecraft version, Forge version, and the rest of its installed mods must be compatible with that OptiFine build.
Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt profiles
A normal OptiFine jar should not be added blindly to a Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt profile. OptiFine’s official downloads identify Forge compatibility, while CurseForge supports several different loader types. A matching Minecraft version alone does not make those loaders interchangeable.
For Fabric, the separate OptiFabric project states that it makes the official OptiFine mod compatible with Fabric at runtime. OptiFabric does not include OptiFine, so both the appropriate OptiFine download and the compatible OptiFabric version would be required. Always check the project’s supported Minecraft, Fabric, and OptiFine versions before adding anything.

For NeoForge or Quilt, do not assume that a Forge OptiFine build will work. Use graphics and performance mods specifically maintained for that loader, or follow a current compatibility guide for the exact modpack version.
What to do if the modpack crashes
Check the error before changing files
Crashes after adding OptiFine commonly indicate an incompatible mod combination or a loader mismatch. Remove OptiFine temporarily and launch the unmodified profile. If the pack starts normally, the problem is likely the OptiFine build, Forge version, or a conflict with another installed mod.
Confirm all three compatibility values
| Value | Where to check it | What must match |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft version | Profile page beside the controller icon | OptiFine’s Minecraft version |
| Modloader type | Profile details and loader settings | Forge must be used with a Forge-compatible OptiFine build |
| Loader version | Profile Options and the OptiFine downloads page | The OptiFine release’s listed Forge compatibility must support the profile |
Repair the CurseForge installation
If the profile still fails, open the profile’s dots menu at the top right, choose Repair installation, and relaunch the modpack.
Change the modloader only when the mod requires it
If the error identifies a different Forge or Fabric version as necessary, open Profile Options, select the required modloader version, click Done, and relaunch. Do not change the loader at random; a modpack can depend on a specific loader version, and changing it may create additional conflicts.
Try the other launcher setting
If the issue appears to involve CurseForge’s launcher rather than the mod itself, open Settings → under Game Specific, select Minecraft → Launcher settings. Change Use CurseForge launcher to Use Mojang launcher, then relaunch.
Check Java and the installation path
Java is required for Minecraft modpacks, and an outdated Java installation can prevent a profile from launching. Install the latest Java version recommended for your Minecraft setup, restart the computer, and try again.

Can OptiFine be installed from CurseForge’s normal mod search?
Not using the normal in-app installation process. CurseForge’s documented mod installation flow applies to compatible mods hosted in its supported content system. The current OptiFine process is different: download the jar from OptiFine’s official downloads page and copy it into the selected profile’s mods folder after enabling content management.
Is a command needed?
No. Adding OptiFine to a CurseForge profile does not require Command Prompt, PowerShell, Terminal, or any special command syntax. The complete manual operation is copying the compatible .jar file to the profile’s mods directory.
FAQ
Where do I put OptiFine in a CurseForge modpack?
Put the downloaded OptiFine .jar file in the specific modpack instance’s mods folder. Open that instance folder from CurseForge rather than placing the file in the general CurseForge directory.

Can I add OptiFine to any CurseForge modpack?
No. The OptiFine build must be compatible with the profile’s Minecraft version and loader. Standard OptiFine downloads are associated with Forge compatibility; Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt profiles require separate loader-specific compatibility checks.
Do I need to install OptiFine with a command?
No. There is no command-line installation step. Download the correct jar and copy it into the profile’s mods folder.
Why does Minecraft crash after I add OptiFine?
The most likely causes are an incorrect Minecraft or Forge version, a loader mismatch, or a conflict with another mod. Remove OptiFine to test the profile, verify the versions, then use CurseForge’s Repair installation option if necessary.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Will CurseForge updates remove my manually added OptiFine?
They can. CurseForge warns that custom changes may be overwritten during updates unless the update is performed into a new profile. Keep a backup or duplicate the profile before updating.
The Bottom Line
In short: enable Allow content management for this profile, verify the exact Minecraft and Forge versions, download the matching OptiFine jar from OptiFine’s official site, and copy it into that modpack’s mods folder. If the profile uses Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt, do not treat a standard Forge OptiFine file as universally compatible.
