Use Angular’s built-in Meta service to set route-specific Open Graph (OG) values. For a share preview to use them reliably, those values must also appear in HTML the sharing service can fetch: an update visible only after client-side JavaScript runs does not guarantee that the scraper received it.
Which Open Graph tags should an Angular page have?
The Open Graph Protocol defines four required properties: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. og:description is optional but generally recommended. Use absolute, publicly fetchable URLs for og:url and og:image; the URL identifies the canonical page, and the image must be accessible to the service fetching the preview. Open Graph Protocol

og:title: the page or content title.og:type: the kind of object, oftenwebsitefor a general page.og:url: the canonical URL for this route.og:image: an absolute URL to a share image.og:description: a concise page description.og:image:alt: useful text describing what the image depicts, rather than a caption.
OG fields are HTML meta elements: put the property name in property and its value in content. The ordinary document title and name="description" tag serve separate purposes; setting them can complement, but does not replace, OG properties. If a property is repeated, consumers may prefer the first value, so avoid accidental duplicate titles or URLs. Open Graph Protocol

Angular provides Meta in @angular/platform-browser. Its API includes addTag, addTags, getTag, getTags, updateTag, removeTag, and removeTagElement. updateTag is useful when route data changes: without a selector, it can find an existing meta element by the same property or name and update it rather than adding another. For example, create a service that receives page metadata after the route’s data is available. This uses Angular’s inject function; adapt the injection style if your app uses a different Angular version or pattern.
import { Injectable, inject } from '@angular/core';
import { Meta, Title } from '@angular/platform-browser';
@Injectable({ providedIn: 'root' })
export class SocialMetaService {
private readonly meta = inject(Meta);
private readonly title = inject(Title);
setPage(data: {
title: string;
description: string;
url: string;
image: string;
imageAlt?: string;
type?: string;
}): void {
this.title.setTitle(data.title);
this.meta.updateTag({ name: 'description', content: data.description });
this.meta.updateTag({ property: 'og:title', content: data.title });
this.meta.updateTag({ property: 'og:type', content: data.type ?? 'website' });
this.meta.updateTag({ property: 'og:url', content: data.url });
this.meta.updateTag({ property: 'og:description', content: data.description });
this.meta.updateTag({ property: 'og:image', content: data.image });
if (data.imageAlt) {
this.meta.updateTag({ property: 'og:image:alt', content: data.imageAlt });
}
}
}
The regular description uses name; the OG description uses property. The service updates each property when called, so call it with the metadata for the active route rather than relying on one set of values for every page. For example:
this.socialMeta.setPage({
title: 'Angular deployment guide',
description: 'A route-specific summary of the deployment guide.',
url: 'https://example.com/guides/angular-deployment',
image: 'https://example.com/assets/angular-deployment-share.png',
imageAlt: 'Angular deployment guide cover graphic',
type: 'article'
});
Replace the example domain and values with your own canonical route and publicly accessible image. If you call updateTag conditionally for an optional field, ensure the base document includes that tag when you need the service to update it; otherwise, add it deliberately and prevent duplicates on later route changes.

Choose CSR, SSR, or prerendering for crawler-visible HTML
Angular apps default to client-side rendering (CSR), where the browser builds the page. Server-side rendering (SSR) returns rendered HTML for each request; prerendering, also called static site generation (SSG), writes HTML at build time. Angular’s rendering choice matters because a social scraper may inspect the response before client-side code has updated the document. Angular server-side rendering guide
Rank #3
| Approach | When route data is available | HTML returned | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSR | In the browser after the app runs | The initial response may not contain route-specific updates | A browser can show updated tags after JavaScript executes, but that does not establish what a scraper saw. |
| Prerendering (SSG) | At build time | Rendered static HTML for the routes generated by the build | Little request-time rendering work; build-time data is required, build duration can increase, and visitor-specific request data is unavailable. |
| SSR | At request time | Rendered HTML for each request | Supports fresh request-time route data, but runs Angular per request and may increase hosting costs. |
For public routes whose metadata is known during the build, prerender those routes. Choose SSR when the page needs fresh route data at request time. A CSR-only app can still update its browser DOM with Meta, but that alone does not guarantee the OG values are present in the initial HTML fetched by a sharing crawler. Search and social crawlers vary in their JavaScript handling, so verify the services your audience uses rather than assuming all crawlers behave alike. SSR and prerendered code must not strictly depend on browser-only APIs. For document access in SSR contexts, Angular recommends injecting DOCUMENT; for metadata operations, use Meta. Angular server-side rendering guide Angular DOCUMENT API
Inspect the actual route HTML and share preview
- Open a representative deep route, not just the home page. Test pages with different titles, descriptions, canonical URLs, or images.
- Inspect the initial server response or generated prerendered HTML. Confirm that it contains the expected
property="og:..."elements and route-specificcontentvalues. Do not rely only on the browser’s hydrated Elements panel, which can show updates made after load. - Check that
og:urlis the intended canonical route and thatog:imagepoints to an image the scraper can access. Add image alt text when it helps describe the image. - Use the Facebook Sharing Debugger to inspect the values and warnings fetched for a URL. After changing metadata, fetch it again; cached previews can make an old result appear current.
- Check the share card on the services that matter to your site. Correct metadata describes the page, but each platform controls how it renders and caches its preview.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect previews
- The browser DOM is correct, but the preview is not: Compare the initial response HTML with the hydrated DOM. If the route’s tags appear only after JavaScript runs, use SSR or prerendering where appropriate.
- Every route shows the same title or image: Ensure route data is passed to
setPagefor each route and that the URL and image values are route-specific. - Duplicate or conflicting OG values appear: Inspect the full document head and update existing tags instead of repeatedly appending them. Check for conflicting tags in the base HTML as well as tags created by application code.
- The image is absent: Verify the absolute image URL is publicly fetchable by the service, rather than relying on a browser-only path or an inaccessible resource.
- The new values do not appear in a debugger or share card: Re-fetch the route with a preview debugger and inspect the response it retrieves. Preview caching can obscure changes, and platform rendering is not guaranteed to match the metadata exactly.
- SSR or prerendering fails on document access: Find code that assumes browser-only APIs are available. In SSR contexts, use Angular’s
DOCUMENTinjection where document access is needed, and useMetafor metadata work.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A screenshot does not replace checking the rendered HTML or share preview, but it can capture a route for visual review without setting up a browser script. One GET request returns an image or PDF; this example saves a WebP screenshot of your Angular route:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/guides/angular-deployment -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting Angular’s Meta service guarantee a social preview?
No. The service updates document metadata, but the scraper must fetch those values and the platform decides how to render and cache the card.
Can I set Open Graph tags for only one Angular route?
Yes. Call a metadata service with that route’s values; for reliable previews, make sure those values are also present in the route’s initial HTML.
