To add music, open a Snap in Snapchat’s creation or preview workflow, tap Sounds, choose and preview a track, trim it if needed, then tap Done. Use Snapchat’s in-app selector rather than assuming that a song you own or credit is automatically cleared for a video. A track available in Sounds is not, by itself, proof that you may reuse it outside Snapchat.
How to add a song to a Snapchat Snap
Snapchat’s interface labels and availability can change. Its support instructions describe these steps for adding music or a recorded sound to a Snap:

- Open Snapchat’s Snap creation or preview workflow.
- Tap Sounds.
- Browse categories such as For You, Saved, Recents, Trending, or My Sounds, or search by artist or sound.
- Tap a result to select and preview it. Tap the selected sound again to remove it.
- Use the trim control to choose where the song starts, then tap Done to apply it.

Make an original Sound in Snapchat
Recording a sound yourself is a separate workflow from selecting a catalog track. Snapchat’s documented Create Sound process allows a recording of up to 60 seconds; that is a feature limit, not a copyright-safe duration.

- Tap Sounds and choose Create Sound.
- Record, then tap the microphone again to stop.
- Name the sound. You can optionally make it public and trim it.
- Tap Save Sound.
Snapchat also documents tapping a sound label on a Snap to use that sound, or opening a sound page from a Spotlight Snap and choosing Use Sound. These are ways to select or reuse a sound in Snapchat, not proof of permission for every other use.
Add music to a multi-clip video
For a video in Snapchat’s Timeline Editor, open the editor from a video Snap preview and choose Sounds or Add a Sound. The music appears as a separate layer beneath the clips. Snapchat’s Timeline Editor instructions say only one licensed song can play at a time and that a track may loop if the video is longer than the song. Can you use any song on Snapchat?
No blanket permission is established by the Sounds how-to. It explains how to select music but does not specify the full license scope for every track, account type, territory, or use outside Snapchat. Before using a track for a business or branded post, or taking a Snap to another platform, check Snapchat’s current applicable terms and any track-specific restrictions for that intended use.

Why owning a song or giving credit may not be enough
In the United States, a song’s musical composition (music and lyrics) is a different protected work from a particular sound recording of that song. They can have different owners and commonly require separate licenses. Buying a song or recording it from a speaker does not by itself establish permission to synchronize the music with video or share that video. The U.S. Copyright Office explains the distinction in its guidance on musical compositions and sound recordings.
Snapchat describes copyright infringement as using another person’s work without permission. Its help page gives parody, news reporting, criticism, and commentary as fair-use examples, but calling a post one of these things does not automatically make it fair use. A short excerpt, a credit line, noncommercial posting, or a disclaimer also does not automatically establish permission. Fair use is fact-specific; Snapchat’s overview is not a legal determination. Will Snapchat remove a Snap for music?
The cited Snapchat materials do not establish a specific enforcement outcome for a particular Snap or track, so there is no reliable guarantee that a post will remain available—or that it will be removed. If you receive a copyright notice or have a consequential business use in mind, review the notice and current platform terms and consider advice from a qualified lawyer in your jurisdiction.
