Press Windows+P and choose Extend for separate desktop space or Duplicate to show the same image on each display. Windows 10 has similar controls, though some labels may differ.
Connect the monitors and choose how Windows uses them
- Connect each monitor to a video output on your computer or a compatible docking station. Turn the monitor on and select the input that matches the cable, such as HDMI or DisplayPort. Microsoft’s multiple-monitor setup guidance recommends checking the PC or dock connection before changing display settings.
- Press Windows+P to open the projection menu, then select the mode you want:
- Extend: Makes the desktop span the displays, so you can move windows and other items between them.
- Duplicate: Shows the same content on each display.
- PC screen only: Uses only the PC’s screen.
- Second screen only: Uses only the external display or displays.
- Open Settings > System > Display. Select Identify to show a number on each recognized screen.
- Drag the numbered display tiles until their positions match the physical arrangement of your monitors, then select Apply. Move the pointer across the screens to check that it passes from one display to the next in the expected direction.
- Select an individual display tile to adjust options such as resolution, scale, or orientation. The available choices depend on the display and hardware. Start with the recommended settings, and make sure the orientation setting matches the monitor’s physical position. See Microsoft’s screen resolution and layout guidance.
If Windows does not detect a monitor
Work through the connection before changing advanced settings:

- Check that the video cable is firmly connected at both the PC or dock and the monitor. Confirm that the monitor is on and set to the correct input.
- Open Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays if needed, and select Detect. Windows 10 uses a similar path, but wording and layout can vary.
- Check for available Windows updates. If the screen still is not found, try a different cable, test the monitor with another computer, or try another video output on the PC if one is available. Disconnect accessories temporarily to check whether one is interfering.
- If one external monitor works but adding another does not, check the computer and graphics adapter specifications. The PC’s ports and graphics hardware determine how many displays it can support; a dock cannot override every graphics limit. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guidance recommends checking with the PC or graphics manufacturer.
Can one HDMI port connect two independent monitors?
A basic HDMI splitter duplicates one video signal; it does not create two independent extended displays. As Microsoft puts it, “If you are trying to use a display splitter to extend your display to more than one external monitor, you won’t be able to.”

Compatibility depends on the exact PC, its ports and graphics adapter, the dock or adapter, and the number and resolution of displays you want to use. Before choosing one, check:

Use a wireless display instead
A compatible Windows PC can cast to a TV, projector, or external display that supports Miracast. Turn on the target display, press Windows+K, and select it from the available devices. A display without built-in Miracast may need a Miracast adapter connected to HDMI. For another Windows PC to receive a projection, it may need the optional Wireless Display feature installed and launched; the setup path varies by Windows version. See Microsoft’s wireless display and projection guidance.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After that date, it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The display steps above may still apply, but this support change is important if you continue to use that version.
