To caption a live stream in more than one language, choose between a viewer-selectable caption track and translated text rendered into the video. YouTube’s documented embedded 608/708 caption workflow currently supports one caption track; a browser-source overlay in OBS can show translated text in the outgoing picture, while a managed HLS/DASH pipeline can deliver separate text streams for multiple languages. The right method depends on where you stream, how many languages you need, and whether viewers must be able to turn captions on or off.
Choose the caption method that fits your stream
| Method | What viewers receive | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube caption ingestion | A caption track associated with the live stream | A YouTube event using supported caption equipment or software | YouTube’s embedded 608/708 workflow currently supports one track; its caption-ingestion workflow has one caption feed per stream entry point. YouTube Help |
| OBS browser-source overlay | Translated words rendered into the video picture | Creators who want visible captions in the composed OBS output | Captions are not a selectable track; viewers cannot toggle or choose them separately. The setup below is described by StreamTranslate. |
| Managed HLS/DASH workflow | Separate text streams for configured languages | Technical or enterprise distribution pipelines | Supported languages depend on processing location, and synchronization choices affect total latency. See Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation. |
First decide whether your audience needs captions they can select or text everyone sees as part of the picture. Then check how many languages the platform and workflow support. A single YouTube embedded caption track is not a way to offer several selectable languages.

Send captions to YouTube as a caption track
YouTube documents two routes: captions embedded in the video using 608/708, or captions sent by supported software through HTTP POSTs. For event-based caption software, YouTube provides a signed Captions Ingestion URL. Follow the current YouTube setup instructions for the specific event and encoder.

Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- Create or configure the YouTube live stream, then open its Settings and Setup options.
- Turn on Closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708.
- Configure your encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions with the video.
- Test the live output before relying on it for a broadcast, including caption timing and legibility.
The 608/708 standard can carry up to four language tracks, but YouTube’s current documentation says this embedded workflow supports one caption track. Do not assume that configuring multiple language tracks in an encoder will make multiple selectable tracks available to YouTube viewers. Read YouTube’s caption instructions.

Caption software and an ingestion URL
- In the live event setup, enable Closed captions.
- Copy the event’s signed Captions Ingestion URL and provide it to the captioner or caption software.
- Set up the caption software to send the feed to that URL, and verify the stream before the event.
- For this event workflow, YouTube advises adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net in its supported software section. Confirm current versions, compatibility, and configuration with the vendor; YouTube says each stream entry point has one caption feed. This workflow does not establish multiple simultaneous language feeds to one entry point. YouTube Help: live captions.
Add translated captions as an OBS overlay
A browser-source caption service can put translated text into the OBS composition. This is useful when you want the caption language visible in the video itself, including on destinations that receive the composed OBS output. It is not the same as delivering a caption track through each platform’s caption controls.
- Choose the spoken source language and the target caption language in the caption service.
- Copy the unique overlay URL the service provides.
- In OBS, add a Browser Source and enter the overlay URL.
- Size the browser source to fit the canvas, then position the captions where they remain readable and do not obscure important content.
- Check that OBS is using the intended microphone or audio input and that the source language matches the speech.
- Test the complete stream output before going live. Check text placement, timing, and readability against gameplay, lower thirds, and platform controls.
Because the words are rendered into the picture, viewers cannot turn them off or select another language through the platform’s caption menu. This workflow and its setup steps are described by the service vendor, not an independent performance test; check its current language availability and compatibility before choosing it. Use a managed HLS/DASH pipeline for separate language streams
For a production pipeline, Google Cloud Live Stream API documents AI-generated captions and translations for HLS and DASH. Its configuration uses a separate text stream for each translated language, with language codes mapped from the source audio language. This is an engineering workflow rather than a quick OBS overlay: confirm that the required language codes are supported in the processing location you plan to use.

- Configure the source audio language and the translated languages in the Live Stream API workflow.
- Set up a distinct text stream for each configured language.
- For distribution, use embedded CEA-608 or CEA-708 formats for the text streams, as specified in the documentation.
- Choose whether to synchronize captions to audio and video, then validate timing and end-to-end latency in the delivered stream.
Google notes that synchronization reduces the viewing latency between captions and audio/video but increases overall end-to-end media latency. That is a trade-off for producers balancing caption alignment against how quickly the stream reaches viewers. Language codes vary with processing location; consult the Google Cloud documentation for the configuration and regional coverage applicable to your pipeline.

YouTube Studio’s subtitle tools apply to a video asset: select the video, add a language, then upload a subtitle file or create subtitles in Studio. Subtitle files contain text and timestamps, and YouTube says automatic captions are in the video’s default language only. Adding translated subtitles to a published recording does not create multilingual captions for a live broadcast. YouTube Help: add subtitles and captions.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common caption problems
- No captions appear in YouTube: Confirm that closed captions are enabled for the event, the correct method is configured, and the encoder or caption software is sending captions to the intended stream or signed ingestion URL. Test before the broadcast.
- Viewers cannot choose a second language: The embedded 608/708 workflow currently supports one YouTube caption track. A single caption feed per entry point also limits the documented caption-ingestion route. Consider a rendered overlay or a managed workflow only if its delivery and platform support meet your needs.
- OBS overlay is blank or captions mismatch the speech: Check the browser-source URL, the selected microphone/audio input, and the chosen source language. Confirm the service supports the desired target language, then test with the actual stream audio.
- Overlay text covers important content: Resize and reposition the Browser Source in OBS, then check it against the full composition and platform controls before going live.
- Captions are late or the delivered stream has too much delay: In an HLS/DASH workflow, review the synchronization configuration. Synchronizing captions more closely to audio/video can increase overall end-to-end media latency.
- Translated subtitles appear on the recording but not live: YouTube Studio’s subtitle workflow edits the video asset; it does not supply a live multilingual caption feed.
