To add modded loot reliably, install the mod on the server, place its economy XML files in a separate folder inside the active mission, and register that folder in the mission-root cfgeconomycore.xml. The DayZ Central Economy (CE) is server-side: it reads those mission files, tracks item populations, and replaces items over time. An item appearing in an admin menu does not prove that the CE can spawn it naturally.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The safest approach leaves the vanilla db/types.xml unchanged. Registered custom files are easier to validate, survive vanilla mission updates, and isolate conflicts between mods.

What controls modded loot in DayZ
DayZ Standalone’s Central Economy is driven by XML files in the server’s active mission folder. The CE does not run on a client, and a client cannot inspect its population state directly. When the server starts, it loads the mission economy configuration, counts eligible copies of each class, removes untouched items after their lifetime expires, and schedules replacements until populations approach the configured targets.
Three files are especially important:
| File or section | What it controls | Typical location |
|---|---|---|
types.xml |
Which item classes can spawn, their target population, lifetime, restock behavior, counting rules, and location tags. | A CE folder under the mission root; vanilla files are under db/. |
cfgspawnabletypes.xml |
Contents generated with an item: magazines, optics, clothing attachments, cargo, and damage ranges. | A registered CE folder under the mission root. |
cfgeconomycore.xml |
Registration of CE folders and files, plus root-class declarations. | Mission root. |
A file copied into db/ but never registered is simply ignored. Conversely, a valid registration with a misspelled classname still produces no natural loot for that class.

Prepare the server before editing XML
Install and check the mod
Add the mod to the server’s startup mod list exactly as its author specifies. Some mods also require a key file on the server; copy it according to the mod’s installation notes. Read the mod’s supplied ServerFiles or equivalent instructions because filenames and required XML differ between projects. Confirm that the mod version is compatible with the server build before troubleshooting economy behavior.
Back up the mission
Stop the server and make a copy of the entire active mission folder. Keep a second backup of any existing cfgeconomycore.xml. XML syntax errors can prevent economy files from loading, and a clean backup gives you a known-good rollback.
Find the active mission
The mission is commonly named something like mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/, although the exact map and mission name depend on your installation. Look for the folder that contains cfgeconomycore.xml, economy.xml, and the db/ directory. Edit this active mission, not an unused template or a different map’s mission.
Use a dedicated CE folder for each mod
Create a clearly named folder below the mission root, such as nightpatrol_ce/. Copy the mod’s economy files into it. A typical set might contain np_types.xml and, if provided, np_spawnabletypes.xml. Keeping a mod’s files together has three practical advantages:

- Vanilla files remain untouched, so a game update is less likely to overwrite your work.
- You can disable or update one mod without searching through a 23,000-line vanilla
types.xml. - Conflicting class definitions are easier to identify when every addition has an obvious owner.
Do not rename files casually if the mod’s instructions refer to exact names. You may choose your own folder name, but the filenames in the registration block must match the files on disk character for character.
Register the files in cfgeconomycore.xml
Open the mission-root cfgeconomycore.xml and retain its existing vanilla rootclass entries. Add a ce block for your custom folder. This example registers both population and spawnable-content files:

<ce folder='nightpatrol_ce'>
<file name='np_types.xml' type='types' />
<file name='np_spawnabletypes.xml' type='spawnabletypes' />
</ce>
</economycore>
The type attribute must match the CE schema. Supported file types include types, spawnabletypes, globals, economy, events, and messages. Game version 1.28 documentation also supports randompresets. Register every file the mod supplies; placing an extra XML file beside the registered files does not load it automatically.
Validate the registration
- Check that the folder name in
folderis exactly the directory name under the mission root. - Check every
nameagainst the actual filename, including capitalization and underscores. - Ensure each
ceblock is inside the singleeconomycoreelement and that all tags are closed. - Restart the server after saving. Economy changes are not applied to an already running CE session.
- Read the server-side CE logs for parse, registration, or unknown-class errors before testing loot.
Build the types entry that makes an item spawn
A registered file only tells the CE where to look. Each item still needs a valid type definition. A typical definition contains the classname, population controls, quantity bounds, cost, counting flags, and location tags:

Population fields
| Field | Meaning | How to reason about it |
|---|---|---|
nominal |
Target number of copies the CE tries to maintain. | Higher values make the item more prevalent, subject to locations, counting flags, and available spawn points. |
min |
Threshold below which the CE seeks replacements. | A high minimum keeps more copies in circulation; a low minimum allows scarcity between restocks. |
lifetime |
Seconds an untouched item can remain before cleanup. | Short lifetimes recycle abandoned loot faster; long lifetimes leave items in the world longer. |
restock |
Restock delay in seconds. | It controls how quickly the CE schedules replenishment after a deficit. |
quantmin and quantmax |
Quantity range for stackable or liquid items. | Use the class’s valid quantity model; weapons that do not use quantity generally use the mod’s supplied values. |
cost |
Relative CE cost used when selecting among eligible loot. | Keep the mod’s documented value unless you have a deliberate balancing reason to change it. |
Location and category tags
category describes the broad class of loot. usage tags identify eligible location groups such as military or industrial areas, and value tags map the item to loot tiers. These tags do not create locations; they restrict where the CE may select existing points. A tag that is misspelled or absent from the server’s limits definitions can make an otherwise valid item appear nowhere.

Counting flags change practical abundance
The CE can count copies in different places, depending on the flags in the definition. Relevant counts may include items on the map, inside cargo, in hoarder storage, and in player inventory. If player or hoarder counting is enabled, a rifle stored by a player can satisfy part of the nominal population and delay a new world spawn. If only map copies count, stored items will not reduce world replenishment. Tune flags together with nominal and minimum values rather than changing one field in isolation.
Add attachments and cargo with spawnabletypes
A types.xml entry defines that an item can exist; it does not define what is attached to it when it appears. A weapon can therefore spawn empty even though its natural-loot definition is correct. Add a matching block in the registered cfgspawnabletypes.xml file for magazines, optics, suppressors, clothing attachments, or cargo.

</cargo>
</type>
</spawnabletypes>
Use the exact schema and nesting supplied with the mod. Attachment and cargo chances are evaluated separately from the item’s population entry. If several weapons or containers should draw from the same set of possible contents, use the mod’s random-preset file and register it with the appropriate CE file type; version 1.28 documentation lists randompresets as supported.
Declare custom roots, categories, usage, and values only when needed
Most modded items inherit from existing roots such as Inventory_Base, DefaultWeapon, or DefaultMagazine. They normally need no new root-class declaration. If a mod defines a hierarchy outside those roots, declare the genuinely new root class in cfgeconomycore.xml while preserving the existing vanilla declarations.
The same principle applies to custom category, usage, or value tags. A new tag must be declared in the server’s limits-definition files before a type entry can use it. Reusing valid existing tags is safer than inventing new ones. An undefined tag can prevent the class from matching any eligible location, which looks like a spawning failure even though the XML is otherwise readable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Restart and test natural spawning
After every XML change, restart the server and allow the CE to initialize. Test in a controlled area rather than relying on a single visit to a popular town. Loot may already be occupied by existing items, and the CE may need time to remove expired objects and schedule replacements.
Best Value
- Confirm the server starts without CE parse or registration errors.
- Check a location that matches the item’s
usageandvaluetags. - Verify the exact classname in the game files and in the type entry; capitalization and punctuation matter.
- Remove or wait for existing loot in the test area, then restart if necessary so the CE can repopulate it.
- Check several eligible locations and more than one restart cycle before deciding that the item does not spawn.
- If the item appears only through an admin menu, treat that as proof that the class is installed, not proof that the CE registration and location rules are correct.
The CE continuously compares observed counts with nominal and minimum values. It can remove untouched objects after their lifetime and then schedule replacements, so a test immediately after startup is not a reliable measure of the final population.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Item is available in an admin menu but never appears as world loot. | The classname is wrong, the custom file is not registered, or the economy subsystems are disabled. | Compare the classname character by character, verify the <ce> registration, and confirm that the server’s economy.xml has the dynamic and building subsystems enabled. |
| Item spawns, but only in unexpected places. | Incorrect or overly broad usage and value tags. |
Use valid tags from the server’s limits definitions and match them to the locations you intend. |
| Weapon appears with no magazine, optic, or cargo. | Only a types.xml entry exists. |
Add a matching cfgspawnabletypes.xml definition and register that file. |
| Loot is far too common or too rare. | Population fields or counting flags do not match the desired behavior. | Adjust nominal, min, lifetime, and restock together; then review whether map, cargo, hoarder, and player copies are counted. |
| Changes disappear after a vanilla update. | Mod entries were inserted directly into stock db/ files. |
Move additions into a dedicated registered folder and restore the clean vanilla files before applying the custom registration. |
| One mod’s definition overrides another’s. | Both registered files define the same classname. | Give custom classes unique names. If overlap is unavoidable, inspect registration and load order; the last-loaded definition wins. |
| Server starts, but a file has no effect. | Filename, folder name, file type, or XML nesting is wrong. | Check exact spelling, ensure the declared type matches the schema, and read the server-side CE log. |
Choose a setup that survives updates
| Approach | Advantages | Risks |
|---|---|---|
| Registered custom files in a mod folder | Separates ownership, simplifies backups, and avoids editing the large vanilla economy file. | Requires accurate cfgeconomycore.xml registration and unique classnames. |
Direct edits to vanilla db/types.xml |
Can appear quick for a single item. | Hard to audit, easy to merge incorrectly, and vulnerable to vanilla mission updates overwriting changes. |
For more than one mod, give each project its own CE folder and use distinctive classnames whenever you control the naming. Keep a written inventory of registered files, custom roots, and any changed limits definitions. When updating a mod, replace only that mod’s folder, review its installation notes, restart, and inspect the logs before testing.
Tune abundance without guessing
Start with the mod author’s supplied values, then change one group of variables at a time. A sensible tuning sequence is:
- Set location coverage first with valid
usageandvaluetags. - Set
nominalandminto define the desired population range. - Choose
lifetimeandrestockbased on how quickly abandoned loot should recycle. - Decide whether copies in cargo, hoarders, the map, or player inventory should satisfy the population count.
- Adjust
costonly after confirming that the item is eligible for the intended locations. - Test over multiple restarts and locations, because one area can be temporarily full or empty even when the CE is behaving correctly.
Remember that nominal is not a promise that the number will be visible on the ground at every moment. The CE’s available spawn points, location tags, existing counted copies, and cleanup schedule all affect what players see.
