The best general-purpose fishing rod in Minecraft combines Luck of the Sea III, Lure III, Mending and Unbreaking. Craft your first rod with three sticks and two string, fish in a safe open area, and reel in as soon as the bobber sinks. Fishing can supply food, experience, enchanted equipment and other treasure, but the exact catch rules depend on your edition and version.

What fishing gives you
Minecraft fishing has three broad outcomes: fish, junk and treasure. Fish are the dependable food source. Junk consists of low-value or situational items. Treasure is the category worth building an optimized rod for, because it can include enchanted books, enchanted bows, enchanted fishing rods, name tags, saddles and nautilus shells, depending on the edition and version you are playing.

Biome affects what you can catch, and Luck of the Sea shifts the results toward better loot while reducing junk. The official material does not provide one current loot table that applies identically to Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, so there is no single reliable percentage for every world. Treat any percentage that is not explicitly tied to your edition and version with caution.
Fishing also produces experience orbs. A rod with Mending can use that experience to repair itself, allowing a long session without repeatedly crafting replacements.

How to make a fishing rod
Materials
- Three sticks
- Two string
- A crafting table
Mojang describes the recipe as straightforward even in the very early game. Sticks come from wooden planks. String commonly comes from defeating spiders or collecting cobwebs with the appropriate tool. Chests and other early structures can also provide string, depending on your world.
Crafting-grid arrangement
- Open a three-by-three crafting table.
- Place the three sticks diagonally from the bottom-left slot to the top-right slot.
- Place the two string pieces in the remaining positions of the right-hand column, below the top-right stick.
- Move the fishing rod to your inventory.
The resulting rod has ordinary durability and no enchantments. It is enough to begin collecting food, experience and the materials needed for later upgrades.
Cast, watch and reel
- Hold the rod and use the cast button to throw the bobber into water.
- Keep the bobber visible. Small particles and movement indicate the bite sequence.
- When the bobber dips under the surface, use the reel button immediately.
- Collect the item and cast again.
Mojang states that a bite can arrive after anything from five to 30 seconds. That is a waiting range, not a promise that every cast will take the same amount of time. Reeling before the bobber sinks normally produces no catch, while waiting too long after the dip wastes the opportunity.

Conditions that change a fishing session
Water and the bobber
Cast into a body of water where the bobber can remain in the water instead of landing on a block, slab or obstruction. A clear, accessible shoreline makes it easier to see the dip and collect the incoming item. Keep hostile mobs away from the bank so that watching the bobber does not leave you exposed.
Bedrock-focused guidance treats open water around the bobber as important for obtaining treasure. Java Edition has also had version-specific open-water checks that affect treasure-focused farms. Because those checks and farm designs can change, identify your exact edition and version before copying a technical fishing-farm layout.

Weather and light
The official article notes that rain generally shortens the wait for a bite. Sunlight or moonlight exposure can also help. These environmental effects do not replace a valid water target, and they do not guarantee treasure; they influence how efficiently a valid fishing spot cycles.
Biome and edition
Biome influences catches. A pond in one biome can produce a different mix from a river, ocean or another environment. The category names fish, junk and treasure are shared concepts, but the contents and technical conditions are not guaranteed to be identical between Java and Bedrock.
Fishing-rod enchantments explained
Luck of the Sea
Luck of the Sea improves the quality of the fishing table: it raises the chance of better or rare results and reduces junk. Minecraft Help lists it through level III, making Luck of the Sea III the normal treasure-hunting target. It does not turn every cast into treasure, and it does not bypass edition-specific water requirements.
Lure
Lure reduces the time before a bite. Its maximum listed level is III, so Lure III gives the fastest normal cycle available through the standard enchantment. Lure increases the number of casts you can complete over time; it does not directly improve the value of an individual catch.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Mending
Mending converts experience orbs picked up by the player into durability for the damaged item. On a fishing rod, that means fishing experience can repair the rod during continued use. Mending is especially useful once a rod already has valuable enchantments, because it prevents routine durability loss from forcing a replacement.
Unbreaking
Unbreaking makes durability last longer by reducing how often a use consumes durability. It works alongside Mending: Unbreaking slows the damage rate, while Mending repairs damage when suitable experience reaches the rod. This combination reduces both material costs and interruptions.

Enchantments that do not improve fishing
Fortune and Looting are not fishing-rod upgrades. The official enchantment lists assign those effects to other item types. Adding them to a fishing plan will not increase fishing treasure or fish quality.
Which rod is best?
There is no separate legendary rod tier. The best rod is the one whose enchantments match your objective and whose rules are valid in your edition. Compare rods on four practical axes:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Priority | Enchantment or check | What it changes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loot quality | Luck of the Sea, up to III | More favorable results and less junk | Treasure hunting |
| Bite speed | Lure, up to III | Shorter wait before a bite | Food, XP or high-volume sessions |
| Durability economy | Mending | Repairs the rod with collected experience | Long-term primary rod |
| Durability economy | Unbreaking | Reduces how quickly durability is consumed | Pairs with Mending |
| Compatibility | Edition, version and farm rules | Determines whether treasure conditions are met | Java or Bedrock technical builds |
For a durable endgame tool, aim for Luck of the Sea III + Lure III + Mending + Unbreaking. A rod with only Lure III is excellent for rapid food or experience collection but is not the strongest treasure rod. A rod with Luck of the Sea III but no Lure is better for quality per catch than an unenchanted rod, yet each session takes longer.
How to obtain and combine enchantments
Enchanting table
An enchanting table can place available rod enchantments directly on a rod. The offered set is random, so do not assume one attempt will produce the complete four-enchantment build. Enchanting a spare rod or lower-cost item can help cycle the available offers.
Books and villagers
Enchanted books can come from several in-game sources, including fishing finds, and librarian villagers can offer books when their trades generate the desired enchantment. Book trading is useful when you need a specific level such as Lure III or Luck of the Sea III rather than another random roll.
Anvil assembly
- Collect a rod and the books or additional rods containing the enchantments you need.
- Place the base rod in the first anvil slot and a compatible book or rod in the second.
- Read the output preview before confirming. Check that the displayed enchantments and durability are what you expect.
- Repeat until the rod has the desired combination, keeping the experience cost manageable.
- Verify that your edition permits the exact combination before spending rare books.
Combining two damaged rods can also restore durability, but it may discard or merge enchantments according to the normal anvil rules. Keep an unmodified backup if a rod contains a rare book you cannot easily replace.

A practical progression from first cast to endgame rod
1. Craft immediately
Make the basic rod as soon as you have three sticks and two string. Do not wait for ideal enchantments before using it; early fish can provide food while you explore for better equipment.
2. Choose a safe fishing spot
Use a shoreline, dock or protected room with a clear view of the bobber. Light the surrounding area and block access from hostile mobs. A safe spot lets you react to every dip instead of abandoning the cast to fight.
3. Prioritize Lure for faster cycles
If your immediate goal is food or experience, Lure improves throughput first. More completed casts make it easier to acquire books, spare rods and the experience needed for later anvil work.

4. Add Luck of the Sea for treasure
Once you are targeting rare catches, prioritize Luck of the Sea, ideally level III. Use an enchanting table, a villager book or a compatible found item, depending on what your world has supplied.
5. Add Mending and Unbreaking
Use Mending to make experience repair the rod and Unbreaking to slow durability loss. Together they turn the rod from a consumable tool into a long-term utility item.
6. Sort every catch
Keep fish, junk and treasure in separate containers. This makes rare items visible immediately and prevents an enchanted book or name tag from being lost among ordinary cod or other food.

Fishing loot: what to expect
| Category | Examples | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Fish | Fish appropriate to the edition and biome | Reliable food and a source of routine catches |
| Junk | Low-value or situational miscellaneous items | Luck of the Sea reduces this category but does not remove it |
| Treasure | Enchanted books, enchanted bows, enchanted rods, name tags, saddles and nautilus shells | Contents depend on edition, version, biome and valid water conditions |
Use the table as a category guide, not a universal probability chart. The authoritative material available for this guide does not publish one current cross-edition table covering both Java and Bedrock, so exact treasure percentages are intentionally not presented.
Why an optimized rod can still produce junk
Luck of the Sea changes odds; it does not guarantee the treasure category. A cast can still return fish or junk. Biome, water layout and edition-specific checks can also matter. If every cast is junk, first confirm the rod actually displays Luck of the Sea, then inspect the water and compare the farm design with the exact version you are running.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition
The basic loop is shared: cast, wait for the bobber to dip and reel. The differences matter when you optimize for treasure or copy an automated design.
| Question | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Basic rod recipe | Three sticks and two string | Three sticks and two string |
| Core enchantments | Luck of the Sea, Lure, Mending and Unbreaking are the relevant targets | Microsoft documentation lists Luck of the Sea, Lure and Unbreaking for fishing rods; Mending repairs with experience |
| Treasure conditions | Check the exact version and open-water farm design before relying on a build | Bedrock-focused guidance emphasizes open water around the bobber; farm compatibility can differ |
| Loot percentages | No single current table in the cited material covers every version | No single current table in the cited material covers every version |
When troubleshooting, record the edition, exact game version, biome and water layout. A design demonstrated for one edition or an older patch is not evidence that the same design works unchanged elsewhere.
Treasure-focused setup without a farm
- Build a small platform beside open water so the bobber is easy to see.
- Light the platform and nearby shoreline, and keep a retreat path available.
- Cast into unobstructed water rather than against a wall or shallow edge.
- Use Luck of the Sea III and Lure III when available.
- Fish during rain when practical, since Mojang notes that rain generally shortens waits.
- Collect experience while fishing so Mending can repair the rod.
- Empty the inventory regularly and keep treasure separate from fish and junk.
This manual setup avoids assuming that an automated design is compatible with your patch. If you later install a farm, verify its edition, version and open-water requirements first.

Troubleshooting common failures
The bobber never produces a catch
- Confirm that it landed in water rather than on a solid block or obstruction.
- Move to a better-lit, safer shoreline where you can see the bobber clearly.
- Allow the full five-to-30-second bite range before concluding that the spot is broken.
- Check for lag or an outdated farm design if you are using a technical build.
The rod breaks too often
- Add Unbreaking to reduce durability consumption.
- Add Mending and collect the experience orbs produced by fishing.
- Combine rods or books on an anvil only after checking the displayed cost and result.
- Keep a spare basic rod for emergencies rather than risking your only enchanted tool.
You catch fish but no treasure
- Verify that Luck of the Sea is actually on the rod and note its level.
- Move to open water, especially on Bedrock or in a treasure-focused farm.
- Check biome, edition and exact version against the design you are following.
- Do not treat a short sample as proof that treasure is impossible; Luck changes odds rather than guaranteeing a result.
An anvil will not create the intended rod
- Inspect both input items for incompatible or conflicting enchantments.
- Confirm that the book level and rod type match the edition’s rules.
- Try a different combination order with fresh materials if the cost becomes excessive.
Efficient inventory and experience management
Fishing sessions become inefficient when the player stops every few casts to dump items. Carry a small set of labeled containers near the platform: one for fish, one for junk and one for treasure or books. A fourth container for tools and spare rods keeps valuable equipment out of the catch stream.
Pick up experience orbs before they drift away or become inaccessible. Mending can only repair the equipped or held item that is eligible to receive the experience, so keep the damaged Mending rod selected while collecting the orbs. If another damaged item is competing for repairs, temporarily remove it from the relevant equipment slot.
Quick Recap
What to choose for each goal

| Rare loot | Luck of the Sea III, Lure III | Improves loot quality while maintaining faster cycles |
| Permanent primary rod | Luck of the Sea III, Lure III, Mending and Unbreaking | Covers loot, speed and durability economy |
| Technical farm | Any compatible enchanted rod plus verified edition/version design | Open-water and farm rules can differ between Java and Bedrock |
