Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo add live captions to a YouTube stream with SyncWords, route your existing encoder’s RTMP feed through a SyncWords Service, configure transcription and Embedded 608 captions, then send the service’s RTMP output to YouTube. You must also enable closed captions in YouTube Studio and select Embedded 608/708 as the caption source.
How the captioning workflow works
Your encoder or streaming service sends its video and audio to SyncWords. SyncWords generates captions from the incoming audio, embeds them in an RTMP output, and sends that output to YouTube. The steps below follow SyncWords’ official Send Captions to YouTube (RTMP 608) instructions. The guide does not state an individual publication or revision date; its Help Center displays a 2025 copyright notice.

Prepare the incoming stream
Check the encoder settings
SyncWords’ YouTube guide specifies these incoming-stream parameters. They are the service’s documented settings, not independently tested recommendations:
- Audio sample rate: 44.1 kHz.
- Frame rate: 29.97 or 30 fps.
- Video bitrate: at least 3,500 Kbps.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds.
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 or 4:3.
Choose an existing stream source
You need a working encoder or streaming service that can send an RTMP PUSH feed. SyncWords’ guide names OBS, Wirecast, and StreamYard as examples. It does not require a particular computer, capture device, or other hardware.

Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
Set up SyncWords and YouTube
- Create or open a Service. In SyncWords, create a new Service or open an existing one.
- Set the input. Under Input Media, choose RTMP PUSH. Copy the input details SyncWords generates into your encoder or streaming service so it sends the live feed to SyncWords.
- Configure transcription. Set the Service to generate captions from the incoming audio. Without transcription configured, the stream will not gain generated captions through this workflow.
- Optionally set translation or dubbing. If you need translated subtitles or dubbed audio, configure those options in the Service. SyncWords warns that its RTMP output supports only languages using Latin character sets; Arabic is an example of a language that will not work on this route.
- Set the output. Under Output, choose RTMP PUSH and add a destination. In Captions & Subtitles, enable Embedded 608.
- Get YouTube’s destination details. In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s Stream Settings and copy its Stream URL and Stream Key into the RTMP destination in SyncWords.
- Enable YouTube captions. In the YouTube stream settings, enable Closed Captions and set Captions Source to Embedded 608/708.
- Start the SyncWords Service, then send the feed. Start the Service so it can accept the incoming stream and deliver its output. Then start the encoder or streaming service’s RTMP feed if it is not already running. SyncWords states that the Service must be started to accept streams and deliver output.
The two caption settings are both necessary on this route: SyncWords says that without YouTube’s Closed Captions enabled and Embedded 608/708 selected, the stream passed through to YouTube will not contain captions.
Choose output and caption settings
Caption channel and existing captions
SyncWords describes 608 as traditional closed captions embedded directly in the video signal. You can assign a language to CC1 and, if needed, CC2–CC4. SyncWords cautions that some players cannot read captions from CC2–CC4, so check destination compatibility before relying on those channels. If the source already contains CC1 captions that should be preserved, the output guide documents a passthrough choice.

Buffer for translation and latency
Buffering trades lower delay for time to process translated output. SyncWords’ RTMP output guide recommends different values for different uses:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Use case | Documented buffer |
|---|---|
| Translated audio | 60 seconds |
| Translated subtitles only | 30 seconds |
| Low-latency, same-language captions | 0–5 seconds |
These are use-case recommendations, not one universal setting. The RTMP output guide also lists frame reordering to support caption embedding across different frame rates and a default late-caption timeout of 30 seconds; consider these advanced settings if captions arrive late or do not align as expected. The output guide, like the YouTube guide, displays a 2025 copyright notice without an individual publication or revision date. See SyncWords’ RTMP Output documentation.

One or several RTMP destinations
SyncWords documents up to four simultaneous RTMP destinations. Each destination can have its own connector type, URL, stream key, and dubbing language. The destinations receive the same encoded stream and caption set; connector, credentials, and dubbing language can differ.
Check the stream before going live
- Confirm the encoder is sending to the RTMP input details generated by SyncWords, not directly to YouTube.
- Confirm transcription is configured and Embedded 608 is enabled on the SyncWords output.
- Confirm YouTube has Closed Captions enabled and Captions Source set to Embedded 608/708.
- Verify the input encoding parameters against SyncWords’ guide and check that any player you rely on supports the caption channels you configured.
- If you configured translation or dubbing, check the language against the RTMP output limitation for Latin character sets.
- Start the SyncWords Service before expecting it to accept the feed and deliver the YouTube output.
Troubleshoot missing or delayed captions
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives video but no captions | Either side of the embedded-caption setup may be missing. | Verify SyncWords transcription and Embedded 608, then verify YouTube’s Closed Captions and Embedded 608/708 selection. |
| SyncWords does not accept the incoming feed | The Service may not be running, or the encoder may be using different input details. | Start the Service and check that the encoder is sending to the generated SyncWords RTMP input. |
| Captions are delayed | The buffer may be set for translation or the selected use case may require a different latency trade-off. | Review the documented buffer guidance for translated audio, translated subtitles, or low-latency same-language captions. |
| Extra caption language is unavailable in a player | The player may not read CC2–CC4. | Check player compatibility before depending on channels beyond CC1. |
| Translated output does not work | The selected language may not use a Latin character set. | Check SyncWords’ RTMP language limitation; the guide gives Arabic as an example that will not work. |
Understand usage billing
SyncWords’ published Live usage page says usage depends on how long an Event or Service is connected and how many outputs it generates. Each language’s captions, subtitles, or audio translation counts as a separate output. Its example counts one hour of English captions, French and Spanish subtitles, and French audio translation as four hours of usage.

Or let it run in the cloud
SyncWords adds captions to a live RTMP feed; it is not the service described here for keeping uploaded videos playing continuously. If your separate goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel using uploaded recordings, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
