Dynamic ad insertion (DAI) selects advertisements for a live stream and places them into scheduled breaks, so different viewers can receive ads suited to their session or available targeting data. In server-side ad insertion (SSAI), an ad service or stream-delivery workflow joins ad media to the program—often through a personalized HLS or MPEG-DASH manifest—before playback. The result depends on correctly signaled breaks, ad decisioning, stream and player integration, and measurement; DAI is not a guarantee of lower latency, higher revenue, or a completed ad view.
How a live ad becomes part of the stream
A live DAI workflow connects the program feed, ad-break signals, an ad decision system, stream or manifest processing, and the viewer’s player. The exact division of work depends on the architecture and vendor.
- Prepare the live feed. An encoder and origin produce a compatible HLS or DASH stream. The stream or manifest needs to identify ad opportunities and their boundaries. For AWS Elemental MediaTailor’s documented live HLS setup, supported marker options include
#EXT-X-CUE-OUT/#EXT-X-CUE-INand#EXT-X-DATERANGE; the workflow requires markers in the live HLS manifest. AWS explains its HLS ad-marker setup. - Register the viewer’s stream session. In Google Ad Manager’s live pod-serving workflow, the player registers a stream and receives a unique session identifier used in subsequent requests. Google’s live pod-serving guide describes this session flow.
- Signal the break. When the program reaches an ad opportunity, manifest markers or other supported signaling identify the avail and its duration. For scheduled breaks using Google’s optional Early Ad Break Notification (EABN) API, Google recommends notifying the system about one minute or more in advance so it can prepare. That is Google-specific implementation guidance, not a universal timing rule. Google’s server-guided ad insertion guide.
- Choose creatives. An ad decision server (ADS) evaluates the request and available targeting information, then returns ad creative references. In AWS’s documented flow, MediaTailor sends viewer parameters to the ADS, which responds with creative URLs in a VAST or VMAP response. AWS describes the MediaTailor workflow.
- Assemble the break into playback. Depending on the setup, a hosted service stitches ad segments into the delivered stream, or a separate manifest manipulator and the player coordinate their use. Some workflows serve ad metadata or pods for the player to handle rather than returning a fully stitched stream.
- Play and measure. The player follows program and ad media and responds to break metadata. Tracking or verification events report playback milestones; they are separate from the fact that an ad was selected or placed in a manifest.
Which DAI architecture does what?
Names and boundaries vary by product. These descriptions summarize the documented workflows; they do not mean the services are interchangeable or support every player, protocol, or feature.
| Approach | Where insertion work happens | What the publisher and player handle |
|---|---|---|
| Full-service DAI / SSAI | Google’s DAI service selects and stitches the ad pod into the delivered stream. | The service returns a stream with ad breaks inserted. The player integrates with the supported DAI SDK or workflow. Compare service boundary, supported player and platform, stream format, configuration control, and measurement needs. Google’s DAI guide. |
| Pod-serving SSAI | Ad Manager supplies ad pods; a separate manifest manipulator stitches or embeds ad references. | The publisher operates or integrates the stream-manipulation component and coordinates sessions, manifests, and verification. Compare engineering ownership, HLS/DASH details, and player integration. Google’s Pod Serving API guide. |
| Server-guided ad insertion (SGAI) | The server supplies break and ad metadata or pods; the player coordinates ad playback. | The player responds to break markers and manages transitions to the ad pod. Google documents EABN as an optional advance-preparation mechanism. Compare player responsibilities, manifest signaling, platform support, transition behavior, and measurement. Google’s SGAI guide. |
| AWS MediaTailor workflow | MediaTailor mediates among player/CDN, content origin, and ad decision server and returns a personalized manifest. | The integration must account for viewer parameters, ADS responses, marker compatibility, origin/CDN configuration, and the selected tracking mode. AWS’s service overview. |
Before choosing an architecture, check the current vendor documentation against the exact HLS or DASH profile, player, devices, and ad-tracking requirements you operate. Google’s DAI insertion type reference provides concise definitions of its serving modes.

Why ad markers, duration, and fallback matter
Markers tell the insertion workflow where an avail starts and ends; they are not decorative metadata. Their syntax and handling vary by protocol and service. In AWS’s documented live replacement behavior, the break interval is preserved as closely as possible. AWS specifies that a live CUE-OUT needs either a duration or a matching CUE-IN. AWS’s ad behavior documentation explains its marker timing and replacement behavior.
Ad-pod length also affects the break. Google’s pod-serving guide notes that Ad Manager may insert slate when the selected pod is shorter than the scheduled break. AWS describes duration-based selection for live ad replacement. Publishers therefore need to decide how scheduled break duration, marker timing, short pods, and slate or other fallback behavior should fit together. Google’s live pod-serving guide.

Insertion is not proof of a viewed ad
A manifest containing ad media does not establish that a viewer watched the ad to completion. The player must handle measurement correctly, and the publisher should validate those events on the target devices and stream paths. Google documents media-verification pings in its live pod-serving flow; AWS’s client-tracking documentation describes impression and quartile beacons for start, first quartile, midpoint, third quartile, and complete. AWS’s tracking documentation.
What DAI does—and does not—guarantee
- DAI can select ads and join them to a live stream at signaled opportunities; the implementation still depends on compatible streams, markers, services, and players.
- Full-service, pod-serving, and server-guided models distribute manifest, insertion, and playback responsibilities differently.
- Protocol support and behavior are implementation-specific. Confirm the current vendor and player support for your HLS or DASH workflow.
- The cited implementation documentation does not establish a general latency reduction, revenue uplift, fill rate, or audience-scale result. Treat such outcomes as dependent on the particular deployment and measurement, not as inherent DAI guarantees.
Or let it run in the cloud
Dynamic ad insertion is for publishers integrating ad decisioning and ad breaks into a live program. If your goal instead is simply to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
