You can send a request using the other player’s friend code, find someone you played with online, or search for nearby consoles. The other player can also accept a request they have received.
Before you start
Connect the console to the internet and link a Nintendo Account to the user you play with. Nintendo says friend features require this link; if Friend Add is missing from My Page, check that the user is linked to a Nintendo Account. See Nintendo Account support for account help.

These instructions are for the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo has separate friend-management instructions for Switch 2, and its menus may differ.
Send a friend request
- From the HOME Menu, select your user icon to open My Page.
- Select Friend Add.
- Choose a request method: Search with Friend Code, search for a user you played with, or search for nearby users.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to select the person and send the request.
Choose the right way to find someone
| Method | Use it when | What to do |

| Friend code | You can exchange codes, including when the other player is not nearby. | Choose Search with Friend Code and enter the other player’s code. |
| Played together | You have already played with the person during online communication play. | Search the list of users you have played with and send a request. |
| Nearby users | You and the other player have your consoles together. | Choose the nearby search and follow the prompts on both consoles. |
Ordinary friend requests require an internet connection. A nearby request can be saved on the console when it is offline and sent automatically the next time it connects.

Find your friend code
- Open HOME Menu → your user icon (My Page) → Profile.
- Look for your friend code on the profile screen and share it with the person who wants to add you.
- If it is not displayed, open My Page → User Settings → Friend Settings and check there.
Nintendo assigns a friend code to each user linked to a Nintendo Account.
Accept a friend request
- Open My Page from the HOME Menu by selecting your user icon.
- Select Friend Add, then open the received-friend-request option.
- Select the request and follow the prompts to approve it.
Limits and recommendation options
Nintendo says each user can have up to 300 friends. Older instructions may mention finding people through Facebook friends or mutual X followers; Nintendo ended those recommendation services on June 11, 2024. Recommendations for friends from Nintendo smartphone apps and eligible linked Nintendo 3DS or Wii U systems are separate options described on Nintendo’s support page.

For Switch 2, use Nintendo’s official Switch 2 support guide rather than assuming every original Switch screen is identical. The Switch 2 guide also covers requests by code, from players you have played with, and from nearby users.
