How to Add Events from a Website to Google Calendar

Add one website event, follow a public calendar, import an ICS or CSV file, or create an event manually. Learn the differences, limitations, and phone workarounds.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the method that matches what the website offers: use its event button for one event, add a public calendar URL to follow a schedule, import a downloaded ICS or CSV file for a one-time copy, or create the event yourself. These options behave differently: in particular, an imported file does not keep syncing with its source.

Choose the right way to add the event

First decide whether you want one event or an ongoing schedule. A website may offer a button for one event, a URL for an entire calendar, or a downloadable calendar file. If none is available or useful, enter the event manually in Google Calendar.

What the website provides Best fit What happens in Google Calendar
An “Add to Google Calendar” or “Add to calendar” control for an event Saving one event Opens a link intended to add that particular event. Availability and behavior depend on the website’s implementation.
A public calendar URL Following a calendar or schedule Adds a calendar under Other calendars. This is a subscription-style route, not a copy of events into your primary calendar.
A downloaded ICS or CSV file Copying the events represented in a file Imports event data into a calendar you choose. The imported events do not remain synced with the source.
No usable button, URL, or file Saving an individual event reliably You create an event in Google Calendar and enter the details yourself.

Google’s help documentation describes these as separate workflows: subscribing to a calendar by URL, importing a file, following a published event link, and creating an event. A site does not have to offer all of them. Look for the option that matches the result you need rather than assuming that every “Add to calendar” control follows a live schedule.

A useful way to choose is to ask two questions: are you saving one date or following many dates, and do you need future changes from the organizer to appear automatically? A single-event link is usually the simplest route for one listing. A calendar URL is the relevant option when the publisher offers a whole schedule and you want it to remain separate. A file import is useful when you have a file of events to copy, but it is not a substitute for ongoing synchronization.

Also consider what information must survive the process. A website button may fill in event details, while a manual entry depends on what you copy yourself. An import copies event data from the file, but Google says guests and conference data are not imported. If those details are essential, inspect the event after adding it and use the organizer’s page or another supported method to retain what you need.

Add one event with a website button or link

If the event page has an “Add to Google Calendar” button, use that for a single event. Some sites label their control more generally, such as “Add to calendar,” and may then let you choose a calendar service. The website controls the link and its contents, so button names, placement, and behavior vary; don’t assume a particular page layout.

  1. Open the event page and find the control associated with that specific event.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Select “Add to Google Calendar” or choose Google Calendar if the site presents a service-selection step.

  3. Review the event in Calendar before saving. Check the title, date, start and end times, time zone, location, and any description or meeting details that matter.

  4. Save the event if the details are correct. If something is missing or wrong, edit it before saving or correct the saved event in Calendar.

When reviewing the draft, compare it with the event listing rather than relying only on the button’s prefilled fields. Confirm that the date is the date you intend to attend, that the start and end times make sense, and that any venue or online meeting information is present. If the event is in a different region or the listing uses a local time, check the time zone displayed in the event. If a detail is absent or unclear, return to the organizer’s page rather than guessing.

A button for one event is not the same thing as subscribing to all events published by that organization. If you want a schedule that can change over time, look for a calendar subscription URL instead.

If the link opens incorrectly on a phone

Google notes that published event links may work best in a desktop browser and may not load correctly in the Calendar mobile app. If tapping the link opens the app to a broken or incomplete screen, open the event page or link in a web browser instead, such as Chrome, and try saving it there. Do not assume that a bad app handoff means the event link itself is unusable.

If you are on a phone and the browser route still does not work, try opening the original event page on a computer or use the page’s file option if one is available. As a fallback, create the event manually from the event details. The key is to verify what Calendar actually saved; an opened link or app screen by itself does not confirm that the event is on your calendar.

Subscribe to a public calendar URL

Use a public calendar URL when you want a calendar to remain available as a separate calendar in your account—for example, an organization’s published schedule. Google’s computer workflow adds it under Other calendars. This is different from importing an ICS or CSV snapshot into an existing calendar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On a computer, open Google Calendar.

  2. Beside Other calendars, choose Add other calendars.

  3. Select From URL.

  4. Enter the calendar’s published URL and add it.

The URL must be one the publisher has made available for adding a calendar. A regular web page address is not necessarily a calendar URL; use the calendar subscription link supplied by the site. Once added, look for the calendar under Other calendars, rather than expecting its events to be copied into your primary calendar.

This route is appropriate when the publisher offers a calendar feed and you want to keep that calendar separate. The available documentation distinguishes subscribing by URL from importing event data, but does not establish a universal update schedule for every third-party calendar feed. The publisher and feed determine what is available, so do not promise a particular refresh interval unless the calendar provider documents one.

Because a subscription appears as its own calendar, check the calendar list if you do not see its events alongside your personal entries. You may need to make sure that calendar is visible in the list. It is still distinct from your primary calendar: adding the feed does not mean the events have been copied into that calendar. If you only need one event from the schedule, a site-specific event link or a manual entry may be more direct.

Import an ICS or CSV file

Import a downloaded ICS or CSV file when you want to copy the events it contains into a Google Calendar. Google documents file import on a computer. Import is not a live connection: later changes to the source do not automatically update the imported events.

  1. On a computer, open Google Calendar.

  2. Open Settings, then Import & Export.

  3. Select the ICS or CSV file you downloaded.

  4. Choose the destination calendar. The primary calendar is the default, so check this choice before continuing if the events belong elsewhere.

  5. Import the file, then check the destination calendar to confirm the events appear as expected.

Import is useful for bringing in a file’s event records, but it has limitations. Google says imported events do not stay in sync with the source account, and guests and conference data are not imported. If a CSV contains repeating events, they may be imported as individual one-time events rather than as a recurring series. Check the result before relying on it as an ongoing schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before importing, decide where the events belong. Since the primary calendar is selected by default, a file can be placed there unless you choose a different destination. If you are organizing a group of imported dates separately, select the intended calendar before completing the import. Afterward, verify both the destination and the visible event details instead of assuming every field from the original source carried over.

Do not treat a second import as an update mechanism. Google’s documented workflow copies event data at import time; it does not keep the imported events synchronized with later changes in the source. If dates or details change, you may need to correct the entries yourself or choose a subscription or sharing route that fits the source. If the file is a CSV with repeating entries, inspect the result closely because the repeats may appear as separate one-time events.

If the source is another calendar account that you need to keep in sync, Google recommends sharing that calendar rather than exporting and importing it. Importing is a copy-at-the-time-of-import workflow, not a synchronization method.

Create the event manually when the site offers no useful option

Manual entry is the reliable fallback when the event page has no working button or file, or when you want to control exactly what goes into Calendar. Google’s documented basics are to choose an open time or select Create, enter a title and details, and save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Calendar and click an empty time slot, or select Create.

  2. Enter the event title and the correct date and start and end times.

  3. Add the location or meeting link and any other details you need.

  4. If useful, put the event’s source page URL in the description so you can return to the original listing.

  5. Review the details and save.

Pay particular attention to the time zone when the event is remote, takes place in another region, or is listed without a clear local-time label. A calendar entry is only useful if its date and time correspond to the event as the publisher describes it. When the listing leaves a detail unclear, check the event page or organizer’s information rather than guessing.

For a practical manual-entry checklist, capture the event name, date, start and end time, location or meeting link, and any access instructions you will need later. The source page URL in the description can make it easier to return to registration details or organizer updates. Do not add private details to a description unless they are needed for your own use, particularly if you plan to share the event.

Creating an event in a mobile browser

Google Calendar can also create events in a mobile browser. Google’s documentation notes that notifications are not supported in that mobile-browser version. If you need event notifications, use the Calendar app or another supported Calendar interface and verify the notification settings there; do not assume that creating the event in a phone browser guarantees an alert.

Understand the differences before choosing

Method Single event or ongoing calendar? Does it sync with source changes? Where it is documented to work Important details and access considerations
Website event link/button Usually one event The link is an event-add route, not necessarily an ongoing calendar subscription. The source does not establish general sync behavior for all sites. Published event links may work best in a desktop browser; on mobile, try a browser if the Calendar app does not load the link correctly. Check the event details before saving. Link behavior and supplied details depend on the website.
Public calendar URL Calendar feed Subscription-style route; the exact update behavior is not stated universally. Add by URL in Calendar on a computer; it appears under Other calendars. Use the publisher’s calendar URL, not an ordinary page URL. It remains a separate calendar rather than a direct import into the primary calendar.
ICS or CSV import Events represented in a file No. Imported events do not stay in sync with the source. Import on a computer. Choose the destination calendar. Guests and conference data are not imported; CSV repeat events may become individual one-time events.
Manual creation One event at a time No source connection is created. Calendar supports creating an event; mobile-browser creation is available but that version does not support notifications. You enter the details yourself, so verify the time, time zone, location, and link.

In short, the biggest difference is whether you are adding one event, following a separate calendar, or making a static copy. The button or link is convenient for an individual listing. A public URL is intended to add a calendar feed under Other calendars. An ICS or CSV import places the file’s event data into a chosen calendar but does not keep it current. Manual entry provides control when the other routes are unavailable, at the cost of entering and checking the details yourself.

Check privacy and guest access before sharing

Adding an event from a website is different from sharing one of your own Google Calendar events. Still, if you later share an event link, treat it as a shareable access route: Google says anyone with a shared event link can view the event details and may add themselves or others as guests. Avoid including private information in an event that will be accessible through such a link, and review the event’s sharing settings before distributing it.

This matters especially when you have copied information from a registration or booking page into an event description. Keep the details needed to attend, but consider whether the description includes information that should not be visible to people who receive the link. Before sending a shared link, confirm that you understand who can view the event and whether guests can be added.

When Gmail adds an event automatically

Some booking and registration messages can create Calendar events automatically, and Google says events created from Gmail can update when a reservation changes. This is a separate route from manually adding an event from a website or importing a file, and it depends on settings and region. Google says events from Gmail are off by default in the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. That regional default should not be generalized to every location or used to assume the feature is available everywhere.

If you expected a booking to appear automatically and it did not, check whether Gmail event handling is enabled for your account and whether the message is a supported booking or reservation. For a website listing that is not connected to an eligible Gmail message, use the event link, calendar URL, file import, or manual entry instead.

Troubleshoot common problems

The button is missing

Not every event website offers a Google Calendar control. Look for a generic calendar option, a public calendar subscription link, or a downloadable ICS or CSV file. If the site offers none of these—or its controls do not work—create the event manually and include the source page in the description if helpful.

The calendar URL is rejected or does not add the event page

Confirm that you copied the publisher’s calendar URL, not the address of the ordinary event or organization webpage. The “From URL” option is for a published calendar. If the site provides only one event, use its event link or enter that event manually.

The file imported, but the calendar is wrong or the schedule looks different

Check which destination calendar you selected; imports default to the primary calendar. Then inspect the imported events. Guests and conference details are not imported, and repeating CSV entries may become separate one-time events. If you need ongoing updates, importing is the wrong method; use an appropriate calendar subscription or, for another account’s calendar, sharing.

The event link does not work in the Calendar app

Open the link in a web browser, particularly on a phone. Google’s guidance says published event links may not load correctly in the mobile app. If the website’s link remains unusable, use another option it provides or enter the event manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You expected a notification after creating the event on your phone

Google’s mobile-browser version of Calendar does not support notifications. Create or manage the event in the Calendar app if you need notification support, and check that the event and account settings are appropriate for the alert you expect.

Practical choice in brief

For one event, use the site’s event-specific button when available and review its details. To follow a published schedule, add the publisher’s calendar URL from the desktop Calendar interface. To copy a downloaded ICS or CSV, import it on a computer and choose the destination carefully, knowing that it will not sync. If those routes are unavailable or unsuitable, create the event manually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add an event from any website directly to Google Calendar?

Only if the site provides a usable event link or calendar option. If it does not offer a button, public calendar URL, or downloadable ICS or CSV file, create the event manually from the listing details.

Will an ICS or CSV import update when the website changes the event?

No. Google says imported events do not stay in sync with the source. If ongoing updates matter, look for a calendar subscription URL or, for another calendar account, use calendar sharing rather than exporting and importing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I subscribe to a website calendar from the Google Calendar app on my phone?

Google documents adding a public calendar URL in Calendar on a computer: choose Add other calendars, then From URL. The calendar appears under Other calendars. For a published event link that behaves poorly in the mobile app, Google recommends trying it in a browser.

Why are guests or video meeting details missing after an import?

Google says guests and conference data are not imported from ICS or CSV files. Check the resulting event and consult the source listing for details you need to retain.

Why did recurring CSV events appear as separate dates?

Google notes that repeating events imported from CSV may become individual one-time events. Review the imported calendar rather than assuming the recurrence pattern was preserved.

Will a shared Google Calendar event link reveal the event details?

Google says anyone with a shared event link can view event details and may add themselves or others as guests. Review sharing settings and avoid putting private information in an event that you will share.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Match the method to your goal: use an event-specific website link for one event, a public calendar URL to follow a separate schedule, or an ICS/CSV import for a one-time copy. Imports do not sync with the source and omit guests and conference data. If the site offers no suitable option, create the event manually and verify the date, time zone, location, and link.
