To add custom clothes, package the assets as a FiveM resource: put a correctly named fxmanifest.lua in a resource folder, stream the pack’s .ydd, .ytd, and usually .ymt files from stream/, register any shop metadata with SHOP_PED_APPAREL_META_FILE, then add ensure your_resource_name to server.cfg. The clothing only appears reliably when the model, texture, variation data, ped type, collection prefix, and menu metadata all agree.

What you need before installing a clothing pack
A clothing download is not installed by copying loose images into a server. FiveM reads clothing through its resource system. Cfx.re’s documentation states: “Every resource is required to contain a resource manifest by the name of fxmanifest.lua defining what files/scripts are used by the resource.” That manifest and the resource’s file layout are therefore prerequisites, not optional extras.

Use a FiveM-ready asset and verify its license
Start with a pack explicitly prepared for FiveM. A single-player archive or a DLC archive may use different paths, naming conventions, or metadata. Converting one can require extraction, renaming, metadata work, and permission to redistribute it on a server. Do not assume that because a file opens in an editor it is licensed for multiplayer use. Keep the creator’s license and installation notes with the pack, and ask for permission before uploading an edited or commissioned version.

Decide whether the pack is an add-on or a replacement

Prefer an add-on when you want several independent items or when more than one clothing pack will run. Use a replacement only when overwriting the named base item is the intended result and you have checked for conflicts.
Check the supported ped and components
Many packs target the freemode male ped, the freemode female ped, or both. The ped identifier appears in the collection-prefixed filenames. A male-only pack will not automatically become available on the female freemode ped, and a pack made for a different ped model may load without producing a usable clothing option. Record the supported ped before installation.
Clothing components also matter. A token such as jbib identifies a component category in the asset name. The drawable number and texture suffix identify the particular model and texture variant. Those values must remain consistent across the pack’s files.

The extensions are not interchangeable. A model without its texture dictionary can appear with missing or purple textures. A model and texture pair without matching variation data can be invisible or unavailable. A collection that should appear in a clothing shop can remain absent if its shop metadata is not registered.

Read the naming pattern as a contract
A typical add-on filename contains the freemode ped, a collection prefix, the component, the drawable index, and (for textures) a texture suffix. For example:

mp_m_freemode_01_mp_m_mypack^jbib_diff_000_a_uni.ytdIn this example, mp_m_freemode_01 identifies the male freemode ped, mp_m_mypack is the collection prefix, jbib is the component, and 000 is the drawable index. The texture dictionary uses a corresponding component and index plus its texture suffix. Do not rename one file casually: a one-character difference can break the relationship the game expects.
Create the resource with the correct layout
FiveM resources are read from the server’s resources directory. You can group clothing resources in a category folder for organization. The resource itself must contain the manifest at its top level, not one directory deeper.

Write a minimal manifest
For the layout above, create fxmanifest.lua with:

The shop metadata is different: list its path in files {} and register it with the SHOP_PED_APPAREL_META_FILE data-file type. If you put the metadata in a subdirectory, use that relative path in both places. Keep the spelling, capitalization, and extension exact.
Some packs include additional scripts or metadata. Do not add arbitrary entries just to make the manifest longer; follow the pack’s own file list and preserve the required apparel registration.
Install an add-on clothing pack step by step
- Inspect the archive. Confirm that it contains FiveM-compatible binary assets, identify whether it targets male, female, or both freemode peds, and determine whether it is an add-on or replacement. Locate any supplied
.ymtand shop.metafiles before copying anything. - Check the license. Verify that your server may use the pack and that redistribution, editing, or inclusion in a public resource is allowed. Keep an unmodified backup of the original download.
- Create a unique resource directory. Under the server’s resources directory, make a path such as
resources/[clothes]/my_clothes/. Choose a resource name that does not duplicate another installed resource. - Create the manifest first. Put
fxmanifest.luadirectly insidemy_clothes. A manifest insidestream/, inside an extra nested folder, or with a spelling such asfx-manifest.luawill not satisfy the resource requirement. - Copy the binary assets. Put every supplied
.ydd,.ytd, and.ymtinstream/. Do not convert binary files to text or place them in a compressed subfolder. Preserve the collection prefix and the exact component, drawable, and texture names. - Place and register shop metadata. Put the supplied apparel
.metawhere the pack expects it, commonly at the resource root. Add its relative path tofiles {}and register the same path withdata_file 'SHOP_PED_APPAREL_META_FILE'in the manifest. - Start the resource. Add
ensure my_clotheson its own line inserver.cfg. Use the exact resource directory name, excluding the category folder. Restart the server, or use your normal controlled resource restart process, and watch the console for manifest, metadata, or asset errors. - Test on the intended ped. Select the freemode ped supported by the pack, open the clothing system used by your server, and look for the collection or its expected component. Test every supplied texture variation rather than stopping after the first model appears.
start my_clothes can also launch a resource, but ensure my_clothes is generally more convenient in server.cfg because it starts a stopped resource and starts it again after a restart when appropriate.

Streaming the files and exposing them in a clothing menu are related but separate operations. FiveM can load the binary assets while a menu still has no entry for the collection. For an add-on intended for shops, the supplied shop apparel metadata must be present and registered with SHOP_PED_APPAREL_META_FILE.

After restarting, check the menu’s collection or component list on the correct freemode ped. If your server uses a custom clothing interface, confirm that the interface reads the add-on collection instead of showing only a hard-coded list of base-game items. The menu resource may also apply its own job, gender, component, or whitelist rules; those are separate from the stream resource and must be configured according to that menu’s documentation.
If the item is visible when applying a drawable directly but absent from the shop, the binary stream is probably working and the failure is at the metadata or menu-integration layer. If it is absent everywhere, inspect the filenames, .ymt, and resource startup first.
Diagnose invisible, missing, or broken clothing

Use the console as your first diagnostic
Restart with the affected resource enabled and inspect the earliest error, not just the final symptom. A manifest or path error prevents later asset checks from being meaningful. Correct one issue at a time, restart, and then test again so you know which change mattered.
Separate streaming failures from menu failures
Apply the clothing through a test method that can select a component directly, if your server provides one. If the model and texture work there but not in the shop, focus on the shop .meta and menu configuration. If direct application is also invisible, focus on ped support, collection naming, the .ymt, and the .ydd/.ytd pair.
Add-on and replacement packs: operational trade-offs
Add-ons are safer for a growing server because their collection-prefixed names are intended to coexist with base-game assets and other independent collections. They do not eliminate every compatibility problem: a malformed prefix, incomplete variation file, or duplicate collection can still prevent an item from working. They also require the additional metadata work when a shop must list them.
Replacement packs can be useful for a deliberate reskin, such as changing one existing uniform slot without adding a new menu entry. Their behavior is destructive by design: every use of the reused base name can show the replacement, and another replacement using the same name can overwrite it. Document replacements for administrators, keep backups, and avoid combining packs that target the same base-game names unless the conflict is intentional.
Quality, compatibility, and maintenance checks
- Keep collections unique. For add-ons, use the collection prefix supplied by the creator and do not copy it onto an unrelated pack.
- Preserve complete sets. Install the model, all matching texture dictionaries, and the variation data together. A partial copy can look like a server or menu bug.
- Test both supported genders. If a release contains male and female collections, test each on its corresponding freemode ped; do not assume a male file can be selected on a female ped.
- Check component compatibility. A drawable made for one component slot is not automatically valid for another slot. Keep the component token and index from the creator’s naming scheme.
- Use a staging resource first. Install one pack in its own resource, start it, and verify it before combining files. Isolating resources makes conflicts and console errors easier to identify.
- Record the source and license. Keep the creator, version, permitted uses, and any required attribution in an administrator note. This prevents an unlicensed re-upload from being mistaken for ordinary server content.
- Back up before replacements. Save the previous resource and configuration before installing a replacement pack, because reverting a conflicting name may otherwise require reconstructing the old files.
- Watch resource size and load behavior. Large texture dictionaries and many variants increase distribution and loading work for players. No universal size limit is established, so judge performance from your own server’s console and client behavior rather than applying an invented threshold.
Installation checklist
- The pack is licensed for your intended FiveM use.
- You know whether it is an add-on or replacement and which freemode ped it supports.
- A unique resource directory exists under
resources/. fxmanifest.luais directly inside that directory.- All
.ydd,.ytd, and supplied.ymtfiles are instream/. - Model and texture names share the correct ped, collection, component, drawable, and texture identifiers.
- The shop
.metais listed infiles {}and registered asSHOP_PED_APPAREL_META_FILEwhen a menu entry is required. ensure resource_nameis present inserver.cfg.- The resource starts without manifest or asset errors.
- The clothing is tested on the correct ped and in every intended texture variation.
- No replacement resource reuses a name that another installed replacement already owns.
Practical example: a small male add-on
Suppose a creator supplies the three files shown in the layout above. Create resources/[clothes]/my_clothes/, put the .meta at the root, and place the .ymt, .ydd, and .ytd under stream/. Use the minimal manifest, then add:

What a successful installation looks like
The server console reports that the resource starts without manifest or asset errors. On the supported freemode ped, the clothing can be selected and its intended textures render correctly. If a shop menu is part of the goal, the collection is listed there as well; if direct application works but the menu does not, the remaining issue is menu or shop metadata rather than basic streaming. Add-on files coexist with existing content, while a replacement changes only the base-game name it intentionally targets.
