Pi-hole can block DNS lookups for domains on its blocklists, but it does not inspect every browser request, page element, or network connection. That means it can reduce some tracking without making browsing anonymous or stopping every tracker. A browser content blocker can cover a different layer, though stricter rules can break websites.
What Pi-hole blocks—and where its reach ends
Pi-hole describes itself as “a DNS (Domain Name Service) sinkhole that protects your devices from unwanted content, without installing any client-side software,” according to its documentation overview. In practice, a device asks a DNS resolver to find the address for a domain. When that lookup goes through Pi-hole, it can refuse or alter the response if the domain matches its blocking rules.

This is domain-level filtering, not a browser examining every item loaded by a page. Pi-hole can block requests to known tracking domains when those lookups pass through it, but the mechanism does not establish what happens inside an encrypted page or guarantee that every tracking technique requires a separate DNS lookup. The documentation does not quantify what share of tracking Pi-hole blocks or misses.
Why tracking can continue
Some DNS requests may not go through Pi-hole
Pi-hole’s DNS filtering applies to requests it handles. If a device or application uses another resolver or otherwise sends DNS queries outside Pi-hole, those lookups are outside this particular blocking path. The official documentation explains Pi-hole’s DNS role but does not quantify how often individual apps bypass it, so the result can differ by device and configuration.

DNS filtering does not hide all traffic information
Blocking or concealing DNS queries is not the same as hiding every sign of a connection. Pi-hole’s Tor guidance warns that network observers may still infer visited sites from plaintext HTTP, HTTPS server-name information (SNI), or destination IP addresses. The guide also says its Tor configuration is unsupported; its examples should not be read as a claim that every observer can see every detail of every connection.
Blocking modes can behave differently
Pi-hole documents several DNS blocking modes: NULL (the documented default and recommended mode), IP-NODATA-AAAA, IP, NXDOMAIN, and NODATA. These modes return different responses to blocked lookups, and clients do not necessarily handle those responses identically.

The blocking-mode guide notes that some configurations can lead clients to attempt connections and that some modes may cause HTTPS timeouts. These are configuration-dependent caveats, not faults that occur on every Pi-hole installation. If a site or app behaves unexpectedly, the selected mode is one setting to check.
How a browser content blocker complements Pi-hole
A browser content blocker works at a different layer: it can filter browser network requests and page elements, including using tracking-related filter lists. The uBlock Origin project describes these capabilities in its documentation. Because it operates in the browser where it is installed, it complements Pi-hole’s DNS-level filtering rather than replacing it for every device on a network.
Ordinary filtering and highly restrictive rules are different choices. More aggressive settings—such as blocking all third parties—can make sites more likely to break and may require the user to intervene. uBlock Origin’s blocking-mode documentation describes that tradeoff. A broken page may require adjusting a rule or allowing a site’s necessary resources; doing so can reduce the protection that the stricter rule provided.
Which layer fits your goal?
| Approach | What it covers | Where it applies | Tradeoff or requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pi-hole DNS filtering | Selected domain lookups handled by Pi-hole | Network clients whose DNS requests use Pi-hole | Requires a compatible Linux host; a dedicated Raspberry Pi is optional, not required by the overview. |
| Browser content blocker | Browser network requests and page elements, using its filters | The browser where the blocker is installed | Stricter rules can break sites and require user intervention. |
Pi-hole is software that runs on Linux hardware; the documentation overview does not require a Raspberry Pi or specify a required model. An existing compatible Linux computer can serve as the host, so dedicated hardware is a choice rather than a prerequisite.

What to expect from using both
Using Pi-hole and a browser content blocker can cover more than either layer alone: one filters selected DNS lookups for network clients, while the other filters requests and page content in a particular browser. Their protections still depend on the requests each one handles and the rules in use. Neither combination promises anonymity or guarantees that every tracker is stopped.
