How to Add and Manage Connected Devices in Samsung SmartThings

Learn how to add compatible devices to Samsung SmartThings, organize their names and rooms, remove them safely, and address common pairing problems.

To add a device in Samsung SmartThings, first confirm it is compatible, choose the correct home location in the app, then use nearby discovery or select the device manually. After pairing, you can edit supported details such as its name and room, or remove it when you no longer use it. Exact screens and prompts can vary by device, app version, and country.

Check compatibility before you start

Not every smart-home product works with SmartThings. Check the exact device against Samsung’s compatibility guidance or use the app’s Add flow to look for supported products. Samsung lists TVs, refrigerators, sensors, and light bulbs as examples. A SmartThings Hub can connect and control a wider variety of devices, but whether you need one depends on the device and setup.

How to add a device to SmartThings

  1. Choose the location. Open the Devices tab, select the Home or location control, and choose the home where you want the device to appear.
  2. Start adding. Tap Add (the plus sign). If the app offers a nearby-device scan and your device is discoverable—such as a Bluetooth device—try that option.
  3. Use manual setup if needed. If the scan does not find the device, select it by device type or brand, or search for it in the app. The available route depends on the device and phone.
  4. Follow the prompts. Complete the app’s instructions. Some Samsung smart appliances require you to press a button on the appliance to enable smart features or finish connecting.

Samsung’s detailed setup instructions are for Canada and note that screens and settings may differ for devices sold in other countries. Follow the prompts displayed for your device.

Nearby discovery or manual setup?

Setup route Use it when What to expect
Nearby discovery The app offers a scan and the device is discoverable nearby. Select the detected device and follow its on-screen setup prompts.
Manual selection The scan does not find the device, or you already know its brand or type. Choose the device type or brand, or search in Add; available choices depend on the device and phone.

Rename a device or change its room

Open the device card and tap Edit to change supported settings. Samsung lists the device name, location, room, favorite status, and a phone home-screen shortcut among the options. The available controls depend on the device; Samsung says Bluetooth-device details cannot be edited through this workflow.

Remove a device from SmartThings

Select the device, choose Remove or Remove device, then confirm. The label and gesture can differ by app platform and version. Removal from the app may not sign a Samsung account out of a touchscreen appliance. For some Family Hub refrigerators, ranges, or ovens, Samsung says a factory reset clears account information stored on the appliance; check the appliance’s instructions before resetting it.

Why SmartThings may not find or connect to a device

  • Check support and setup prompts: Confirm the exact device is compatible, and complete any required action on the appliance itself.
  • Check the network for Wi-Fi devices: Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance says a Wi-Fi device may need to be on the same network as the hub. If you changed your Wi-Fi name or password, update network information for the hub and connected devices. Follow the device maker’s instructions too.
  • Exclude a previously paired Z-Wave device: Samsung Canada advises removing or excluding a Z-Wave device connected to another hub before adding it to a new hub.
  • Try adding it again if appropriate: Samsung’s troubleshooting guide suggests removing and re-adding a device in some cases; if that fails, a reset may be needed. Treat reset as a later step and use the device maker’s reset instructions.

For network and status problems, see Samsung’s SmartThings troubleshooting guide. Its network advice is US guidance, so account for your device maker’s setup requirements. Avoid deleting all devices, locations, and automations as an initial fix; Samsung describes that kind of broad cleanup in connection with widespread hub problems.
